THE body of Celtic legend Billy McNeill’s missing grandson has been found.
Matthew McCombe went missing on March 14 while celebrating his 21st birthday in Amsterdam.
His heartbroken mum Paula shared the tragic news on Facebook this morning.
She wrote: “It is with great sadness that we are announcing our son Matthew McCombe’s body was found this morning.
“Matthew was much loved by all and our hearts are broken.
“We would like to thank everyone who has helped in the search for Matthew and for the love, compassion and kindness that has been extended to us since our arrival in Amsterdam.
“As a family, we would kindly ask for our privacy to be respected in these sad times.”
Matthew’s dad Charlie had made a plea for information on Dutch television last weekend. In an emotional appeal, he said: “For some reason, we don’t know why, he left the hotel room at 6.15am.
“I had a text at 1.36am. I’d asked him earlier, ‘How was it?’, and he texted back saying, ‘Class night’.
Paula described her only child as “laid-back and the type of person to chat to others”.
Hoops icon Billy McNeill, after a long battle with dementia, passed away on April 22 last year.
