Treble talk, farewell Big Mike

2035

Talk of trebles can disappear over the space of 90 minutes, and Ronny Deila will be forced to learn new patter if his team cannot regain the edge which was lost on Wednesday night at Celtic Park.  The challenge will be all the greater for the absence of cup-tied Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven, with others, including Kris Commons and Emilio Izaguirre.

Dundee United have fallen apart in the last few weeks, the departure of Armstrong and Mack-Steven has probably had something to do with this, which means they will be hurting.  Make no mistake, Celtic harmed their season by signing their best two players five weeks ago.  United will have an edge to them.

Just loving the celebrations that one of the world’s richest 400 people no longer controls a Scottish football club.  He still controls pretty much all profitable revenue streams, and holds security over assets, but he’ll no longer be asked to provide loan players, or loan cash.  They have swapped an ‘off the radar’ wealthy man for a glib and shameless liar.

Ashley repulsed many.  He was the archetypal fox let into the Ibrox hen house.  The juxtaposition of Celtic announcing a £29m shirt deal with New Balance, rights Ashley bartered for £1 at Ibrox, gives you an idea of how impaired newco are.  But allowing him to walk off with all those revenue streams, without the responsibility of running football operations, which will always lose money, is inexplicable.

I know people in the game who were concerned about having an opponent with the resources of Ashley.  That blocking SFA decision was crucial.  I don’t know anyone concerned about King, in fact, there is quiet delight at how things transpired.

Farewell Big Mike, thanks for all your work.

I actually believe it is a much wider issue than just one football club and people should be held to account

Too early …. and scarifying your lawn before the first cut nearer the end of March…

  7. Grass is often neglected during the winter and according to folk law, the first cut of the season commences in March and the last cut undertaken toward the end of October.

However your lawn does not completely go to sleep during the winter months, whilst the rate of growth dramatically reduces as the temperatures drop but the grass will never actually stop growing.

With the effects of global weather changes, the cutting season is now longer – okay in the UK we had the coldest December on record and if you still currently have snow on the ground as parts of Scotland and other northern counties now is not the time to consider getting your mower out.

But when the air temperature outside is around 4 to 5 degrees, the top of the leaf blade will produce new spikes. Mowing your lawn over winter not only keeps your lawn neat and tidy but will also help to stimulate growth ahead of the main growing season and build up a dense lawn that has a strong growth rate. In fact when the temperate rises by just one degree more this will effectively double the metabolic growth rate of the grass.

I personally mow my lawn every 10 to 20 days during November, December and January and then fortnightly from February. It is also a useful method of picking up the last of the winter leaves.

This is of course subject to the ground conditions – as long as there is not a risk of frost /snow and the ground conditions permit (not waterlogged!) and ideally when dry.

Before cutting, I bush off any worm casts and any fallen debris. This allows me to also assess the ground conditions and check for any lawn disease and moss infestation.

Lawns should be mowed according to the rate of grass growth and only taking off no more than a 1/3 of the grass sward. However for the cuts over the winter months I would only aim to just “top” the grass sward and leave the height settings at their highest. If the ground is nice and dry, I will even use the rear roller mower!

The key to mowing your lawn over winter is:

When dry and ground is sufficiently firm

Never mow when there is snow or frost on the ground nor when the ground is frozen

    Sharpe blades

Cut high (set the mower blades to no lower than 25mm)

Always collect the cuttings – do not mulch

And before you know it, it will soon be late February / March and time to consider what lawn treatments are required and increasing your mowing to fortnightly / weekly.

surely my continued prescence here backs up entirely what you state. We do need to agitate for change however. Unfortunately the belligerent billionaire and his saatchi and saatchi poodles have managed to convince the support that ever increasing profit is all that matters. The support becomes more belligerent with every passing day.

  10. My friends in Celtic,

While I am desperate for a win today ( any sort of win ) I disagree with AN that this is our most important game of the season to date. That accolade was last week which we won in some style. Domestic cups although important, are a bonus. The league must be our priority.

I disagree with captain beef heart , Europe was a learning curve for a completely new management team with a completely new focus. To lose by the odd goal against one of the giants of Italian football can not be considered a flop. From a dismal beginning of the European campaign we then galvanised the support and could be considered slightly unlucky. We also gave a timely reminder of our potential to a galvanised tv audience, and our new shirt sponsors.

    HH.

Ps: I for one am not outraged by the dinarsaur,s that are the Sevco supporters singing about Billy Fullerton. It reminds us exactly who and what they are. Any decent, intelligent supporters would attempt to bury his history, rather than endorse it in song. Condemned by their own mouths, only they are too silly to see it.

Who on earth cares about Rangers other than Rangers and Celtic fans?

We flopped in Europe this year. Perhaps an analysis of that would be more fruitful instead of the Rangers obsession.

I didn’t realise Paul had appointed a blog monitor. Do you get a badge and stand in the corridor during breaks? ;))

We didn’t flop in Europe, and I’m one of the Deila doubters you were calling a Green Hun last week – qualification form the group and a decent fist of the Inter tie, taking it to the last 5 minutes amid extraordinary circumstances was a competent performance overall for a developing side.

  15. Narrow win today will do fine – Dundee United will throw everything into it this and next week.

Cup games can be won in the first 20 minutes so we need to be at it from the off.

MIbbery will also be at its most potent of the season, with their newest delusions still spinning raindow-coloured unicorns and nymphomaniac mermaids floating out of Dave King’s arse, so any win is a great win today.

  19. Thanks to Auldheid for an excellent analytical article on the corruption at the core of Scottish football. This is why we should continue to shine a spotlight on their activities and ensure our club and others are not cheated as we were previously.

An abundance of riches this weekend with BRTH’s two pieces, excellent summations of the state of play. On Spiers: I did hear him say yesterday that King was not a fit and proper person to run a Scottish football club and Cosgrave quoted the famous line form the South African judge. They also spoke about a compliant media as did Jim Spence earlier in the day. However Spiers tried to equate King’s takeover with that of Fergus McCann. He is wrong here on so many points but the obvious one is that Fergus did not sit on a board with the Kellys et al as they ran us into the ground. The all conquering

heroes, King and Murray, were compliant in their beloved club’s demise and King was happy with the liquidation route. He will never stand up to comparison with Fergus McCann.

Paul Murray’s arrogant comments yesterday-provided by Traynor- were an embarrassment and disrespectful to all clubs in Scotland. I hope the humbling they received at mighty Cowdenbeath is not their last, in fact I’m sure it wont be.

I used to love him telling me the stories about Belfast Celtic the detail was amazing and you could transport yourself there

He told me the club withdrawing from the league was the only option and had the support and communities full backing at the time – but it ultimately broke his heart and he said it hurt him every day since

I would hate that to happen again

We were thumped by a mediocre Polish mob, beaten by Slovenians and ended up losing to a crap Italian mob. I like to think Celtic can do better. To do better, we must spend some of our resources which we earned thanks to good scouting and CL performances.

‘Obsessed’ is the Huns favourite retort from their position of perma-rage at us laughing at them.

I laugh therefore I am ‘obsessed’.

  26. Bada bing,

I understand where you are coming from ref the treble.

I hope James Forrest plays. I still think he can be an influential player for us. He can give us an option that others cannot.

He has been criticised, so what. He will know what is required to change jeers into cheers.

From being a complete waste of space to being the “bees knees” is only a game ( or part of a game) away to the fickle nature of some fans.

One thing is for sure, he will get far more tolerance and encouragement from our away support.
