Turning under-performance into awesomeness

661

I’m reliably informed Legia will not ‘park the bus’ on Wednesday.  Instead, with a three goal lead, they have enough legroom to play their normal game, attempt to compete in the middle of the park, and expose holes at the back, as they did last week.  What’s more, they’re unsure they would be able to park the bus successfully for an extended period.

Set aside the debacle what was our defensive performance for a moment.  The period of last week’s match Ronny Deila should initially concern himself with is the opening 25 minutes, when Celtic largely bossed the game.  We then have to consider the 40 minutes we looked comfortable with 10 men; not an insignificant achievement away from home in Europe.

In short, Legia are a team which for large periods of the game we looked to have the measure of, despite the anomalies of playing a debutant, an inexperienced youth and with a left back who was left out.  We should do far better at Murrayfield.

Legia believe they are going through.  They unquestionably have the upper hand but the Celtic collapse in the final minutes, when we appeared to be too busy picking fights than sticking to plan, distorted the perceived difference between the teams.  Celtic didn’t just underachieve, they did so on an epic scale.  What Legia don’t know, is what a highly-functional Celtic team looks like.

We need to transform that epic failure into the kind of performance we are capable of in Europe.  The defence needs to find the form which broke so many records last season.  Ronny needs to find some of his awesomeness.

The reality is, despite last week’s debacle, we’re still in this tie – and should plan to go through.

If we sell Commons for say 7.5, Forster for 9, VVD for 7 and perhaps Matthews for 3 then that pretty much wipes out the need to compete in the Champions League.

Therein lies the problem. Transfer income is guaranteed at this time of year whereas champions league participation is not.

When you have a requirement to run at a profit the shareholders would be crazy not to take the easiest less risky route.

Why invest or keep the team the same just to gamble on Champikns league participation and doing well when you get the same monetary result by not qualifying.

Thing is that is a short term view. Sadly.

  3. Hi Singing Detective

I have checked out 3 links which you have given over the last 24 hours – apologies if there have been others which I have missed. The latest is from the Gatestone Institute (8.06 this morning). Wikipedia notes that this Institute “”was founded in 2011 by Nina Rosenwald, an heiress of the Sears Roebuck empire who has been a key philanthropic backer of anti-Muslim groups and individuals in the United States”.

The two links I looked up last night has similar anti-Muslim or pro-Israel backgrounds. They seem to be generally right wing.

Now none of this makes what has been written wrong in itself, but it does mean that your political posts can hardly be seen as objective. If Fat Sally writes something about Sevco, then we wouldn’t expect objectivity – he is of course coming at things from a particular point of view. And so are you, and so am I. Any number of posts from a partisan organisation are just so much confetti. Maybe something like this morning’s NY Times would be seen as more objective, “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has largely dismissed American efforts to end the violence, leaving U.S. officials to seethe on the sidelines”.

For the record, I think that Hamas are an organisation with whom I would not often agree, but when you are boxed into a corner of a corner, that often happens. Israel has behaved disgracefully – as it often does, unfortunately. As the regional superpower it must show restraint, but it does not. It is the Palestinians who are suffering most. There are wrongs on both sides, but the deaths are largely those of Palestinian civilians.

Livi bhoy, I don’t think we should be exclusively Scottish but ignoring the talent on our doorstep is not proving to be prudent.

I would prefer a policy that is generally geared towards making us a better team. Pursuing players under the age of 23 with a view to selling them on leaves us open to mercenary behaviour. VVD is a case in point. Agitating for a move to a big club down south after 6 months.

The club don’t believe we can improve beyond what has been achieved already so they stick to the plan of selling Celtic as a stepping stone.

If we had a few more Scottish and Irish players we might see some more camaraderie and tie to the club. Those players can be augmented with properly scouted foreigners.

Here’s an off the wall comment. Barry Robson would have improved us in this last few weeks.

  5. mullet and co 2

I think you have basically said what I have. Our core players have to be British or Irish and a few risk signings from abroad. They can be very hit or miss but they will find life a lot easier with a core of players who know the league and what the club is about. I think our policy the last 18 months has not been successful. When we had a core of players from the British isles and Ireland we have usually had decent success.

Not buying the decent talent in Scottish football just seems a bit crazy to me. We are a big fish in a small pond and we are not taking advantage of our financial muscle in our own league. There must be 3 or 4 players per season who can make our squad better in the Scottish game.

I would say that even buying 1 or 2 per year makes sense both financially and for the good of the team.

  7. One thing to remember about buying the best of Scotland is that teams might not want to sell to us, or may demand a premium for doing so.

Let’s say we’d really wanted Ryan Gauld. Dundee Utd might have said they want £4M given that he’d be coming up against them. Is he still value for money at that price? (I think he is, beyond that now).

You can’t just look at the value these players go to other leagues for and assume we’d get them for the same.

  8. mullet and co 2 on

    Morning All.

The under 21 initiative sounds like a good move for a variety of reasons and on a variety of fronts.

Such a tournament has to be approved by UEFA as I understand it and that makes for interesting thinking.

Re tomorrow night, i can’t share in Paul’s opinion that we bossed this or that, nor that we were comfortable for 40 minutes with ten men.

For me, the worst problem was that for most of the game I thought the Celtic palyers were absolutely clueless.

They couldn’t pass, didn’t have a shape, couldn’t trap the ball, couldn’t match runs, couldn’t tackle, were outnumbered in key areas and generally had absolutely no clues tactically as to how you beat Legia or even match them.

At 1-0 to us, we should have completely changed shape to make sure we did not concede and retain possession of the ball and numbers behind the ball. At least for 30 minutes or so.

Anyway, if the correct team is picked, and set out properly then we have a chance — a slim chance but a chance all the same.

If we are in front by anything to nil at half time then that will suit me.

In reality I suspect we are headed for the Europa League although to qualify for that you are still going to have to beat a good team, and if you want to go any distance in the competition then you need to strengthen the squad rather than weaken it.

And therein lies a big question.

By criticising Israel, are we supporting their opponents?

Or ignoring the big picture elsewhere?

IMO,the fact that Israel is a nation state committing atrocities makes them a valid target for criticism, and I know you don’t dispute that.

However, the atrocities committed elsewhere are in many cases worse. Isis just being one.

That so many are committed in the name of Islam should anger Islamic people everywhere.

And I’m pretty sure it does.

But they are powerless in the face of intimidation and murder.

    As,it seems,are we all.

This will be my last political post on this blog, as it’s very emotive for people.

Hammas remind me of a true story from the Vietnam War, when General Giap of the NVA communist forces was asked about the Chinese (using the vietcong as a proxy war against the USA) providing all the military help the Vietnamese needed.

He said ‘the Chinese are willing to fight until the last vietnamese is dead.’

And so it is with Hammas. They are clearly willing to serve up their civilian population as collateral in their war against Israel.

They launch enough ineffective rocket attacks on Israel to provoke the out of proportion response from the Israelis. That is the rocket attack’s purpose.

The PLO and Hammas had a civil war a few years ago leaving 600 dead. The PLO were politically savvy, and raised awareness of their plight world wide. Hammas won the civil war, and won the political elections however.

Hammas officially accuse the jews of lying about the holocaust.

They officially refuse to recognise Israel.

They are a nightmare government for the palestinians.

Two nations led by lunatics, slaughtering the palestinians.

A few hunger strikers in ireland achieved more politically than thousands of dead civilians.

The unionists and republicans of ireland / uk showed political dialogue and trust can overcome very difficult situations.

Unfortunately Palestine appears to have no rational leadership that we in the west can truly understand.

When I first heard of Heineken I was informed that it reached parts other beers couldn’t somehow get to.

The spin about this new deal between the brewing giant and the two year old club is, well spin.

The corporate bars at Ibrox will be supplied with Heineken products at a cheaper price than the normal term so the profit to RIFC/TRFC will be higher per unit sold.

Heineken operate what is effectively a Cash On Delivery system with all of the outlets they supply.

They are not unique in this among brewers and Diageo do something very similar.

    So no credit terms then.

Which is probably just as well as the outstanding bills to various suppliers that stood at five is now up to seven.

When it was just the five the overall bad news was in the region £600,000.

Obviously it is higher than that now.

The good news is that they made payroll without touching the Season Ticket money.

Now we’re in August and the VAT will be due on the 7th of this month on any Season Tickets sold up to the 30th June.

Any sales after that then the VAT aren’t due for another three months.

That nice Mr Letham is also due his money now and that is £1.15 million.

I understand that staff bonuses due this month.

I’ve been informed by sources that Marius Žaliūkas was expecting his signing on fee with his salary this month, but it wasn’t there.

However I’m sure that was an administrative error and will be cleared up soon.

Recently the club/company/celestial entity made quiet overtures to Dundee United about Charlie Telfer.

You may recall that the Tayside club and the new club are in dispute about the level of compensation.

The Arabs had offered around £60,000 based on the two years that the young midfielder was with Sevco.

I understand that the folks at RIFC/TRFC are now willing to do a deal based on two years.

However, they’re keen to have this business completed discreetly.

On the austerity front it was good news as the trip to Derby was sensible.

I am told that the Sevco entourage kipped in a budget hotel and didn’t linger.

The financial problems haven’t gone away you know and the Shareholder Option looks seriously compromised now because of the Stockbridge effect.

With the Season Ticket Strike still staying solid the hope for the people trying to keep the Ibrox show on the road is that they get sell out home gates.

There is no working capital other than the Season Ticket cash and, of course, no credit line from a bank.

The at Sevco situation is straining the business sinews of a highly skilled corporate team and they are hoping that the Season Ticket Strike does break and they will then have a fighting chance of keeping the lights on.

One moment of humour from the booze deal was when Philip Nash, true to his Cork roots, decided to chance his arm.

Dear reader the Rebel County, where I have many good friends, is renowned for producing , ahem, shrewd negotiators.

Let’s just leave it at that…

Moreover after yesterday this adherent of the Green and Red of Mayo is feeling rather ok with the world!

So the man whose cousin keeps goal for Cork hurling team sent a missive to the Heineken account manager to ask for one hundred free barrels of the stuff ‘as a gesture’.

His perfectly reasonable request was rebuffed, but two barrels were sent gratis.

I’m glad to report that they reached their destination.

The VAT bill will surely be low Phil, as not many tickets were sold before end of the vat quarter 30/06/2014. The costs against that would bring it down quite low. The next VAT bill will ne a big one and that should hit 7 figures. How long can this show go on.

The bills are mounting, imagine messrs Nash and Wallace are letting these bills run on wee bit,as an artificial credit line.

Many small businesses do this in particular with suppliers, like brewers who collect monthly, by direct debit.

However Phil, and this would be telling, can you find out if a security deposit was asked for by Heineken?

Two barrels, were they barrels. By way of barrelage, which is 1 barrel is 3x11gallon kegs. Or barrels which are commonly said in laymans speak asn11gallon kegs. If the latter, let me assure you, that is a total slap in the face to the club.

Which reeks of, we have not much confidence in you.

As two free kegs can be obtained by a company with just a few small, steadily busy puns.

i recently done a deal with Heineken, on prices, for my john smiths and Heineken on tap. If you can email me the figures rangers. Are paying and i will know if they are decent. If they are same as mine, then i may have done well but chances are,if they are higher Heineken not confident in this club.

    HAIL BLOODY HAIL

  24. LennyBhoy, £2-3m makes more sense, £7m for a 30y.o. in the last year of his contract sounded like paper talk.

    I hope Kris stays.

Having said that I hope Ronny has a very good replacement lined up if he does leave.

Just what was reported on SSN that WBA were to bid 7.5 million; this was reported earlier this morning. No response as I understand from Celtic or indeed confirmation from WBA.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

£2/3 million for a Player that is nearly 31, we know what Peter will do if and it is a big IF the reports are true.

Stuart Armstrong as a replacement and only 22??

    I’d be happy with that.
