Uefa deliver Lisbon Lions Dividend

475

Yesterday Uefa announced a series of revisions to the Champions League from the start of season 2018-19.

The headline initiative, which was trailed in the media for some weeks, is that the top four qualifying nations are guaranteed four entrants in the group stage. At the moment the top three nations are guaranteed three entrants each, with a fourth team entering the tournament at the play-off round. The fourth placed nation is guaranteed two in the groups, with one more team in the play-off round.

In effect, all this means is that Italy gets one more team in the tournament, while the likes of Tottenham don’t need to go through the anxiety of a play of qualifying, even if the outcome is pretty much inevitable.

How teams earn coefficient points, and how they earn money are both changing, with Celtic standing to gain more than any other team in Europe. At the moment part of each teams’ coefficient is made up of an average of their nations’ entrants over the previous five years.

This penalises Celtic more than any other team in Europe. No other country has one team in the Champions League group stage, while all other teams failed to qualify for all group stages over the previous five years. From 2018 coefficients will no longer be dependent on the performance of other teams from your national association.

There’s also a Lisbon Lions Dividend. Teams who have won the European Cup will earn four monetary coefficient points. If they have won the Champions League within the previous five years, the bonus will be 12 points, and if they were European champions earlier in the Champions League era, the bonus will be 8 points.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lisbon, it is astonishing that the achievement of those men is still bringing benefits to Celtic in ways no one could have dreamt of back then. I’ve said it before, but it’s impossible to overestimate what they did for Celtic. Without them, we would have been as relevant to Scottish football as Hibs.

  1. Turkeybhoy,

I love reading Neganon’s posts. They are powerful.

I’d love to sit beside him watching the Celtic play.

  2. Gerry

Have drifted away from Argentinian footy, they weren’t doing it for me, going with goals these days in the lower divs in britland, have a flutter in a few euro games esp here in Spain, my neighbour is a godsend, he knows the lower leagues like the back of his hand, we have a wager together every week, he gives me his few euros and I stick it on, he couldn’t even turn a computer on but he sure knows his footy.

  3. THE EXILED TIM,

There is so much Spanish Fitba oot there.

I find their games very miserly when it comes to goals. Like the Argentinian Leagues. The odds always reflect this. Having any sort of knowledge about local stuff is very helpful.

  4. Turkeybhoy.

I think Neganon raised important points today.

The new set up is to suit the elite nations. Although our co efficient will improve, our chances of qualifying, through the Champions route, arithmetically, have been reduced by 20%. We are a top seeded team just now in the qualifiers, that should remain under the new,set up but it will be more difficult to qualify. Italian teams will benefit hugely from the new set up, particularly both Milan clubs if they qualify.

  5. Fholks if your lookng for something to do on Friday night Graham Hunter will be doing the Big Interview with Neil Lennon in the Greenock townhall. There will be a Q&A and auction at the night as well. Tickets are available on line and also in the Celtic supporters club in Greenock. This event is hosted by Martin Compston to raise money for the local Hospice which is also one of the main charity beneficieries from our club.

Apologies if my post read like that, my view was Mark stood by his thug pal Paton…… Again apologies if it read that Mark Wilson had anything to do with Zaluska, sometime inaction is worse than the offence……

Next time you are over let Dick Byrne know I was asking after him, got a lot of time for the JJ guy, reading your posts I know you and Oldtim and Dick B meet up…..

I suppose there is a first for everything :-)

Some fans love being unhappy, it must be rubbish these days when we are doing no too bad

Sad news coming from Besiktas. 13 dead and 38 injured. Car bomb exploded outside stadium 2 hours after game had finished against Bursapor. Allegedly it was an attack on Armed police.

  11. CRC haha.. its been a while but all for a great cause.. I see your still stalking your favourite band..

  12. Gerryfaethebrig,

I too know Dick Byrne through work and I’m beginning to wonder why our own paths have never crossed. I managed to work my way through a number of now closed districts including Kilmarnock, Paisley and Hamilton with a very good friend of mine running the Coatbridge office for 5 or 6 years in the early part of this century. Oh and my own coupone pick bombed dramatically today too. ;-)

  13. Gerryfaethebrig.

I posted, that he raised important points.

Although I do think Neganon raises good points too, at times.

I just wish Neganon would smile a bit more and enjoy a glorious time for us. Like the rest of us though he is entitled to his opinion. I enjoy the blog because of its diversity, some I agree with more than others but that’s the beauty of it. It would be very boring if we all held the same opinions.

  17. JNP totally agree…. I just like a wee dig at Neg as he referenced me as “people like GFTB”‘by the way I took no offence whatsoever and am sure Neg knows that, but with ears as big as mine an elephant never forgets :-)

Jobo Baldie…… I used to work in Portcullis House with Dick Byrne, my two sisters worked with you in Cotton House before you moved to Hogwarts, I mean Centre 1, my new addition to LMS hails from Blantyre and works in the centre, we haven’t met (yet) but I know loads of people who have already worked with you

For any obsessive Sevconians HMRC is full of Celtic fans :-)

It is horrific being a Leader.

All IcaN ever do is get people to Pray for Leaders.

Praying for people you don’t like isn’t easy. Do you know them?

I will speak with DB. I remember you already told me that you know J through work. Re Wilson, it’s probably me who did not understand your post properly.

    JIMMYNOTPAUL

We started into the league and Champions League with the new, the worst coach I have ever seen, Besnik Hasi. After 0:6 against Borussia we changed the stuff. The new coach is 38 years guy who spent 19 years with the club. He said at the first press conference: We need to start our progress with scoring first goal, then we will draw and after that we will win. This guy was hundred percent right because we lost 1:5 to Madrid (but we played well), then we draw against Real 3:3 and we won against Sporting 1:0.

I read your post about the donation, young Deccy comes from good stick, I know some say on here do this and do that but you and Jobo do a great thing, and the links are much appreciated, I know it’s a laugh and a joke about the Sevco selections (MIT) now more than once, but for a wee bit of fun it’s great stuff, the links about Shay and real life are pretty dam amazing…….you & Jobo keep up the good work it’s much appreciated

  21. Zbyszek.

    Thank you for the information.

The new coach has certainly made a good start to his managerial career with Legia. Hopefully you will get a kind draw in the Europa League and make it to the later stages.

  24. Further to the discussion today, I’d just like to reiterate the sentiment of the support during the Man City game: “get the Brits out now” indeed.

Thank you. I watched all Celtic games in the Champions League this season. I’m very impressed on a huge progress the team did under Brendan Rodgers. I like it very much. Souds nice to my ears when Polish commentators compliment Celtic.

  27. I never taught my Son the rebels.

As we played together online, sitting 3 feet apart, I’d drop in a random Rebel song lyric. As TT says, incredible music construction.
