Uefa deliver Lisbon Lions Dividend

475

Yesterday Uefa announced a series of revisions to the Champions League from the start of season 2018-19.

The headline initiative, which was trailed in the media for some weeks, is that the top four qualifying nations are guaranteed four entrants in the group stage. At the moment the top three nations are guaranteed three entrants each, with a fourth team entering the tournament at the play-off round. The fourth placed nation is guaranteed two in the groups, with one more team in the play-off round.

In effect, all this means is that Italy gets one more team in the tournament, while the likes of Tottenham don’t need to go through the anxiety of a play of qualifying, even if the outcome is pretty much inevitable.

How teams earn coefficient points, and how they earn money are both changing, with Celtic standing to gain more than any other team in Europe. At the moment part of each teams’ coefficient is made up of an average of their nations’ entrants over the previous five years.

This penalises Celtic more than any other team in Europe. No other country has one team in the Champions League group stage, while all other teams failed to qualify for all group stages over the previous five years. From 2018 coefficients will no longer be dependent on the performance of other teams from your national association.

There’s also a Lisbon Lions Dividend. Teams who have won the European Cup will earn four monetary coefficient points. If they have won the Champions League within the previous five years, the bonus will be 12 points, and if they were European champions earlier in the Champions League era, the bonus will be 8 points.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lisbon, it is astonishing that the achievement of those men is still bringing benefits to Celtic in ways no one could have dreamt of back then. I’ve said it before, but it’s impossible to overestimate what they did for Celtic. Without them, we would have been as relevant to Scottish football as Hibs.

“Yes there was not much said then, all sort of wait and see how the court case goes on the appeal if it is ever made.”

    *****

Even if they won their appeal on the EBTs, that wouldn’t alter the fact that Sevco is a new club, with zero major honours, the opposite of what is displayed on that webshite, the acceptance of which makes Scottish football a farce.

So that’s, of course, no excuse.

  2. BEATBHOY, so true, a new club being awarded league and cup wins from a dead club. Makes you want to vomit.

I agree with your view , I do not understand why the board are taking this course of action.

I gave my opinion on the ‘rebs’ a couple of nights ago- and to sum up think people should have the right to sing what they like but would add the possible provisos that the songs should not be either obscene or an incitement to violence. I do think that there can be too much of the repertoire on occassion and the first half on Tuesday was such an occassion and there can be times when some of what is sung can seem inappropriate to me – during the first half of that sensational match with Citeh ar Celtic Park a brief chorus of ‘Get the Brits Out now!’ just seemed all wrong. Mostly though they don’t bother me as much as I simetimes think I should.

I do though disagree that those -at least on this blog- who are strongly agin them are doing so because they are against the progress that is being made so marvellously so far this season. This is a debate that has lasted throughout the 49 years I have been going to games – and I would assume for a lot longer than that.

So you play a right-back at left back, a left-back at centre back, alongside a “footballer” who can’t defend and behind them a “footballing” goalkeeper that can’t keep goal. And you concede four goals. Who said football was a simple game?

  6. Gerryfaethebrig-my bloody kindle fire is playing up spelling wise, :-)))am from 19-85 onwards mate, final wise we didn’t do to well

Ironic that we get dragged into “The Songs” debate on here-and elsewhere-with some trying to defend it and others-like BLANTYRETIM said-who were brought up on them

Bet the huns don’t have a songs debate.

I hate to say it but if Stuart Armstrong keeps progressing he can nearly lace One of Paul’s boots :-), when a young maestro broke broke thorough he scored at Ibrox & Pittodrie in his first games there, young Armstrong sort of reminds me of Paul…….a long way to go but he has years on his side

No disagreements at all ….. I just think some like to have a dig at our fans, by the way, we have our own share of clowns but over the piece 99% of our songbook has no hatred whatsoever……

  10. Oh well I honestly thot hartz would have taken a point today, not to be, still it keeps the warbiola in a job longer so that can only be for the best.

Second is the new first Timmy and don’t you forget it.

  11. Apols for my pick in the CQN acca today, wtf happened I have no clue, it cost me a right few bob so it did, was my single of the day and it was the only one that let me down in four other accas, but it’s what I get for choosing Airdrie, karma is a bitch at times, I shood have chosen the hun :-)

    Thanks

What are the views here on the two fringe players who played last night ie Christiab G and GMS? I do not know that I thought the latter did himself that many favours though I would be prepared to cut him slack but increasingly I rather like the former after a couple of pretty poor early games. Maybe not the new Didier Agathe I had been expecting but neat and tidy.

Mark Wilson (Hun-skepler) although a bit sleekit with Zaluska (that’s Bailleston punters for you) anyway, Mark got manager of the month (a curse unless your Brendan) with I think 5 victories in his first 5 games, at 1/3 probably not a great bet :-)

  14. For what’s it’s worth, doubt that the ‘Lisbon Lions Dividend’ is anything to shout about in the scheme of Champions League

Thought gamboa did well, , won the ball to set up the 3rd goal.

Mackay Steevens probably not the best of games but I wouldn’t be in a rush to dismiss him. Brendan seems willing to give him a chance. That’s good enough for me

  16. Gerryfaethebrig on

For me the jury is out with Gamboa, I think the Barca game was Brendan’s biggest flip-up, flinging the boy into the Camp New (that’s how Brendan calls it) for his debut, then going to 5 at the back and whatever the rest ended up……as for GMS, last season for a couple of months GMS was our best player think he got 8 or 9 goals in about 12 games, some important winners as well, if BR can work his magic with JF (who has been great this season) who knows what he can do with a fit GMS…. Brendan is keeping them all on their toes, long may it continue

Airdrie were about 8/11 when I picked them, against the bottom club as well ffs, teams tend to go on wee runs, their’s came to an end today :-(

He is as sleekit as they get, obviously knows what side his bread is buttered and a liar to boot, weird how some turn.

it shows the scorched earth murray left behind him that a club in turmoil can be second, their competition has been seared to the bones almost as if murray planned it that if everything went south they’d be back soon because they destroyed everything

  19. Gerry,

Stuart is getting better and better each game, I’m deeeelighted about that.

Paul, as you said, made an Instant impact on Celtic. Paul had supreme confidence in his own ability, and no wonder.

It is Brilliant to see Stuart starting to really Flourish.

Definitely Huns without the bus fare for Govan ……they can’t even dog the train now barriers at queen street & the subway

  21. Always found the Celtic fans that denounce the ‘Songbook’ hilarious! Unless the songs in the stadiums are talking about killing or hurting anyone then really what’s the problem? The majority Irish Rebel songs are song about the freedom of a nation that uses them to reflect and remember their independence. Regardless if your a Scot Celtic supporter who doesn’t see the need for the songs or Scot/Irish and have forgotten your identity, these songs have been connected to Celtic for more years then anyone could comprehend. And that’s a fact. Just because some don’t like the message, does not mean there is no message. I would agree, a song like ‘the S.A.M. Song’ is not needed or should be permitted around Celtic Park. But Rebel songs like ‘Grace’ or ‘Let the People Sing’ are no more inappropriate than ‘The Flower of Scotland’! Same subject matter talking about historical tensions with the same superpower! ‘Boys of the Old Brigade’ gets brought up due to its IRA reference! If anyone educated themselves, they would know it’s not about the Provisional IRA, but the IRA of the Easter Rising of 1916, which was widely celebrated throughout this year! The Queen herself having paid tribute to the leaders of that movement a few years ago! It’s time to see these song for what they really are. Are they needed at CP, no! But if a large section of the support connects with these songs, so be it! Let the People Sing!!!

Something a bit smelly about Airdrie game.

Airdrie drifted from 1/3 to 8/11 and Stenny the bottom clubs odds were slashed.

I was talking to an Airdrie fan about it this morning and he said he couldn’t understand it as they had normal squad available and he was expecting to thump the bottom club.

It will take a special player to replace Paul McStay, but I think a certain Scott Brown could end up a Celtic legend…….. Scott will be more appreciated when he is coaching or even managing the hoops :-)

Worked for a firm in Coatbrig late 80s, they employed me as I don’t have a Timmy name and they were struggling for work, I did them a decent turn, got contracts with Glasgow Corp and all was well, but the politics astounded me, I knew things werny the best but it shocked me how bent it really was.

I digress, don’t know yer man and I doubt I ever will, happy he was part of a skelping team and he scored a very decent goal agin them, but he really needs to take a step bake and think about what he is saying he has spouted some amount of pish this week re the support.

    Better luck next week :-)

  25. Gerry,

Scott has been a Revelation this Season.

As you have mentioned a few times…. Big Kolo has helped Scott immensely.

Scott wanted to do Everything so that Celtic benefitted.

Now that we are seeing Scott being slowed down, we are seeing so much more.

    Brendan is Incredible.

Fitba is about being in the right place.

Celtic will have to beat more than Europes elite clubs next Season.

    Bring it on.

  26. Ol Pedro the postie aint gonna be too happy if things stay the same in the Real game, they have 14 ish mins to change it, will they, who cares, he does and when he is no a happy postie we are the ones who suffer, he is no averse to not opening when he feels like it and he feels like it when Real don’t win, he tends to go on the lash for a few days when they lose so the postie office, well it’s actually part of a garage come shed disny open at times, we should be grateful if the truth be told that we have a postie office.

And they have just equalised so they have 10 mins to win it, I need it to be open on monday :-)

  29. THE EXILED TIM,

Do you bet on over goals in Argentinian games?

I think a lot of value is there.

It isn’t easy to spread your games when doing an accumulator, if you are patient then doing an accumulator that starts Thursday/Friday night and ends Sunday could be a good.
