Uefa need champions to be nominated

233

You and I have known for a while that the chances of football resuming to allow domestic and European seasons to conclude by the end of June are zero.  Uefa almost certainly knew this too before their videoconference meeting with the national associations last week, but they agreed to setup a working party to explore all options before issuing a decision.

As the virus spread, what was unthinkable only a few days earlier becomes the accepted norm.  By the time the working party reports, almost everyone in Europe will know football across the continent will be in lockdown until at least August.  Before then, transcontinental travel will be irresponsibly dangerous, so there is no chance of staging Champions and Europa Leagues finals in June.  These outstanding games, like the three remaining Scottish Cup ties, can take place anytime, even after the start of next season.

As we discussed two weeks ago, and today’s Daily Record reported “a source close to the discussions”, leagues and associations across Europe have asked Uefa to issue clear guidelines on what to do with their domestic competitions.  Whatever happens, many will be unhappy across Europe, but if Uefa guidelines are followed, outcomes will be transparent and free of interference.

What football needs now is money and the biggest pot available to much of the continent is from Uefa competition.  Heaven and earth will be moved to ensure the Champions and Europa Leagues will take place next season, ensuring TV and sponsorship income flows as usual.

For this to happen, Uefa will need champions to be nominated.  It is not how we wanted nine-in-a-row, but we all have more to worry about that football glory right now.

  1. I have never felt like this before (and although I DO want us to win the league): Celtic and Championships are way down the line of priorities at this moment in time.

I am one of those who are in the 14 day quarantine and not even having a supply of toilet rolls is any preoccupation.

    Stay safe and well, everyone.

Thank God for the NHS and all those in the caring professions.

Once again, my condolences to Canamalar.

If you are right Paul , and we end up with an asterisk against title no.9 , we should insist that the ‘Rangers’ have a jobby emoji against their EBT titles. Fair’s fair.

  5. Does anyone really think that if sevco we’re only 1 point in front of us with same games played they wouldn’t already be crowned champions.

If only thems had managed to stay ahead of us after the game on 29th……..whit do you mean ‘they wurny’?

  7. I think that Celtic being nominated is almost certain. However, being named as Champions will have to wait till football resumes. The first games should be this season’s 19/20. We may need to truncate season 20/21as it’s unlikely we can play 8 games plus 38

Canalamar, my thoughts and prayers with you and your family at this sad time. May your good dad rest in eternal peace

  11. UEFA will be loath to write off this season’s competitions and will seek to finish them.

Next season’s CL groups look very unlikely to be commencing in September.

If that’s the case then domestic leagues should be given every opportunity to finish before starting again immediately on the 20/21 season.

I suspect the cause for concern here is clubs wanting tv money dished out and getting season ticket renewals coming in.

  12. The sad news continues, The Legend known here as kikinthenakas has also been bereaved,

His Dad passed away last night,

  20. I really don’t get the continuing desire to have an outcome to the domestic season forced upon any nation. Football is off the table just now. Full stop. It could be safe to resume in August. Equally it might not be safe till this time next year. Who really knows. Just because we started this as season 2019-20 doesn’t mean that we are tied in to our August – May season from now till eternity.

We won’t suddenly hear on a Tuesday that the fitbaw’s back on the next Saturday. It’ll surely happen in stages – (1) an indication at some point that the virus may be under some degree of control (2) a timetable for getting all life, work, and yes sport too back to ‘normal’. Once we know that then decisions can be made.

So, for example, it’s 1st August, control measures have been working and the Government decides that there’ll be phased returns to work, etc with the aim of ‘normal life’ by mid September. Scottish football can then timetable the remaining games from 2019-20 from say mid-September to end of November. Then have a 6 week close season, including a transfer window. In mid January 2021 we could have 2 choices – Option A, have a curtailed season ending in May. Perhaps even just league games (thus ending our quest for a quintuple treble!!) and perhaps with a degree of temporary league reconstruction – e.g. 14 team top league, 26 game season. Or Option B – decide to completely shift the footballing calendar in Scotland to run from February to November, even if that means a break in the middle due to International tournaments.

For clarity, the dates that I’m mentioned above are purely there as an example. Nobody, NOBODY can predict when football will start again

So, my immediate wish is that the current season is eventually played out and properly finished. In the long run that’s the ONLY way to limit the conspiracy theorists.

Could be my longest post ever there, apologies (POTY stuff excepted ;-) )
