Uefa still on the pot on fixtures

668

Lots of frustration around today at the possibility the first leg of the Champions League qualifier will be switched to Belfast.  It will be no comfort to those who booked travel yesterday but we are in this situation every qualifying game.  The draw is made and confirmed a day or two later, which is why clubs (including Celtic) and CQN yesterday ran a “Don’t book travel until…” piece.  On most occasions nothing is changed which means fans are caught out when change happens.

No reason why Uefa can’t deal with this on the day of the game, or exclusively on the basis of strict criteria.  I hope they deny this request, which is not in Celtic’s favour and clearly not in fan’s best interest.

Two items to draw your attention to today:

Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust

Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust are undertaking a sponsored cycle of all SPL grounds this September in attempt to get to our £100k fundraising target. This money will be used to help on the battle to fight skin cancer working with organisations such as Beatson Cancer Centre. The event is called Tour for Tommy and will span 5 days, 12 clubs and 380 miles of cycling before returning to Celtic Park on Sunday 15th September. Ex-Celts such as Packie Bonner and Frank McGarvey are joining in as the full event and Bertie Auld will be completing the last day. The event is looking to team up with the fans of each club to join them on a leg from their stadium to the next.

The group have much of the logistics in place and most of the riders, but they need more help. Each of the four main days are being offered for sponsorship with day one already taken up. In return the 30-40 core riders will get their clothing made with that company’s logo as well as any signage on press releases at the stadiums among other benefits (full pack available upon request). The Tour has already received great coverage from Sky Sports with further commitment to track the whole event.

In addition the charity are looking for donations of anything from water bottles, energy bars/drinks to medical supplies and biking mechanical supplies.

If you are interested in getting involved in any way you can contact scottmcgarvey@gmail.com. You can donate here, follow on Facebook and twitter (@tommyburnsSCT).

I know many of you will be aware of the work done by Celtic fans for the people of Haiti as part of the Hoops For Haiti campaign.  This is another aspect of the incredible work done by Celtic fans and a credit to our club.  You can read their blog here and get involved here.

    Willie Wallace : THANK YOU.

Had the honour of meeting you in Clydebank and you took time to sign my book(s) and then stand for photos with my 2 young daughters. They couldn’t wait to go into class on the Monday to tell everyone that they had met another Lisbon Lion.

I then had the repeat honour of talking to you on Friday night at Paradise at the Lions event. Your book is fantastic, you are a gentlemen and can I just finish by saying thank you to you and all the Lions for winning that BIG CUP…… We are eternally grateful. Safe journey home to you and Olive. HH

He has a few years left, only 28, free, a half decent player, and if he is a last resort, we must be looking for someone very decent.

    I trust Lenny.

When you back over here ?

  3. McFadden is mainly a left sided player, Samaras, Commons and Stokes would be in the team before him any day of the week…

  4. Fenerbahce have been banned from next

season’s Champions League and Besiktas from

    the Europa League over match-fixing

    allegations, UEFA has announced.

The UEFA control and disciplinary body

confirmed Fener would be banned from

European for three seasons in total, with the

third deferred for a probationary period of five

    years.

It is the Turkish giants second exclusion from

Europe’s top competition after they were

banned from the 2011-12 Champions League

    due to the match-fixing scandal.

A UEFA statement read: “The CDB carefully

analysed the situation of both Fenerbahce and

Besiktas and has pronounced the following

    sanctions:

“Besiktas is not eligible to participate in the

    2013/14 UEFA Europa League.

“Fenerbahce is excluded from participating in

the next three UEFA club competitions for

which it would qualify, including the 2013/14

UEFA Champions League season. The ban for

the third season is deferred for a probationary

    period of five years.”

Fener, who reached the semi-finals of the

Europa League last season, finished second to

Galatasaray in the Turkish Super Lig, one

    place above Besiktas.

Five Fener officials and two from Besiktas also

had charges heard, but UEFA said that in

relation to them ”the CDB decided that certain

additional information will be collected in

order to consider in further detail the different

position of each of the individuals concerned”.

UEFA confirmed earlier this month that its

control and disciplinary body would hear

    charges following an ”investigation into

    alleged match-fixing activities”.

The European governing body also today

imposed a suspended one-year ban from

    European competition on Romanian side

Steaua Bucharest, who were accused of a

    breach of Champions League participation

    regulations

UEFA said: “The CDB also carefully analysed

the situation of FC Steaua Bucharest and,

    taking into account certain mitigating

    circumstances, the following sanction has

    been imposed:

“FC Steaua Bucharest is not eligible to

participate in one UEFA club competition for

which the club would otherwise qualify. This

sanction is deferred for a probationary period

    of five years.”

Fenerbahce have said they will appeal the

decision, with the other two entitled to do so.

Fado is not ‘free’ , he’ll be wanting paid, and he’ll expect Celtic to come through with biggish money.

I saw him give a very good Celtic defence a hard time in his first spell with the mothers; he is 28 and has not made the most of his talent.

The resurgent Shaun Maloney is an interesting one, I think the training at Wigan must have suited his fragile muscles, allowing him a decent run of games to show his ability.

    25 June, 2013

I just wanted to come back onto CQN this evening to say my farewells as myself and Olive head back to Australia tomorrow. I would like to offer my heart felt thanks to all the Celtic supporters I have met during the past month, at book signing events, in supporters clubs such as Greenock and at the CQN Golf Day. Also to everyone at the Lions Roar event last Friday where Bertie stole the show as usual! I came all the way from Australia and I couldn’t get a word in! The 1254125 charity tells you everything you need to know about Celtic supporters.

What is amazing about this Celtic family of ours is that when you live at the other side of the world you still know that this is a special club with wonderful supporters. Then you come back to Scotland and realise you actually under estimated these things because Celtic is even better than you remember and the fans are truly amazing. The best in the world.

I hadn’t really known too much about the significance of CQN before – yes I knew about it and the magazine but never realised what Paul has created. To everyone on CQN can I say a very special thank you. I hoped that the book would go well and we’d sell a few copies but it was never about money – it was about telling my story. I arrived at Winning Captains house and was met by a mountain of books to sign – all ordered by the CQNers. I had to go back another day to finish signing and the mountain was as big as before! I’ve been avoiding him ever since!

To Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan – when I heard his name I thought that would be some round of drinks! He’s been great, helping make Heart of a Lion what it is – a really good Celtic book – and turning up at the CQN events and book signings.

So thank you Paul, Jim, Tony and David and thank you the CQN’ers. Thanks to the Celtic family and I look forward to our next trip home to Paradise. Hail Hail and all the best to each of you and your families.

    Willie Wallace

    Keep the Faith!

You’d think they could have arranged for Willie Wallace to get a podium.

  9. Thankfully, nobody replied to Mr Wallace in traditional CQN style to new posters :-)

  10. Willie Wallace – Thanks for logging on and sharing your thoughts. I thought the book was a great read and thanks a million for signing it for me. Your story was very similar to my own childhood, spending lot’s of time around the Kirkintilloch, Kilsyth, Croy and Cumbernauld areas playing football. Unfortunately for me, the similarity ended when you signed for Hearts and then Celtic and went on to win the big one.

Safe travels home and best wishes from Minnesota, USA.

  11. Mr Wallace, thanks for all the great memories, thanks for signing my book and t-shirt in Clydebank, thanks for last Friday night with the other Lions. Looking forward to reading your book on holiday next week.

I hope you and Mrs Wallace have a safe and pleasant journey home and that you continue to grace this great site.

    Thank you.

    Auldheid,

I am in your camp with McFadden.

Risk free signing, and a test for our fitness and coaching team to get the best out of him.

The art of management is about managing and deploying resources.

Signing McFadden is a no brainer for me.

  14. Joe Filippis Haircut on

If we look at Faddie he has played in top flight football in England and did well and was in most Scotland squads when fit, he is a high energy player and did well enough for Motherwell last season. The difference with him and Paddy is not there skill it is energy levels very often Paddy looked as though he had run out of steam that doesnt happen with Faddie. If we are paying him as he plays that should reduce the financial risk of long periods with injury.I certainly feel he would be worth a seasons trial.H.H.

  15. This Cliftonville thing has me confused…

why are they changing it to first leg in Belfast???????????????/

What difference does it make to Clubs or UEFA??

  17. Hello Willie Wallace!

I don’t know if there are many of your books in Paris, but I am savouring mine, just reading a wee bit before nodding off to sleep and dreaming about those heady days in the late 60s, early 70s.

My pesonal favorite in the team back then was the Celt from Saltcoates, BL.

My mum used to tell me off whenever I tried to walk bandy leggit like him – ha ha !

What I remember most about you was that when your name was on the team sheet, I felt reassured, just knowing that you would give your normal high standard of peformance and just do the business – making and scoring goals.

The games that are etched on my memory are the SC final 67 and the Dukla semi at Celtic Park.

    Enough said!

Best wishes to you and your loved ones, and safe journey back down under.

Maybe you will turn out for the “Lions” when you get back home and give them a wee boost aganst the Aussies !

  20. 19LisbonBhoy67 on

Can anyone even try to fathom out the recent Sevco signing policy? If they are burning approx £1m per

month then what is their objective/thinking behind adding all these players who must be on more £ than most spl teams?

I can’t understand what the long term

plan is with this attitude. They will simply suffer an insolvency event quicker than predicted. Or is that the plan?

  21. McFadden had his chance to play for the hoops.

Better players than Wanyama have come and gone at Celtic FC

Now that the EPL makeweights have set his fee at around the 12-14M mark we can expect the middle band EPL teams who have a 50/50 chance of making the CL to enter the fray.

15M from the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton or Newcastle sounds about right…….

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

If Celtic have accepted £12M from Southampton, why would any other club offer more???

I’m sure VW’s agents know the acceptable fee. They would be negotiating anything above this as their side of the deal.

Once Celtic agree a price it is down to the player to agree personal terms.

  26. iPaddy McCourt on

Yes to Faddy, could be a great option for us with a long season in prospect. No transfer fee involved and we are awash with cash so wages not an issue.

Wanyama’s agent – those comments make me want to puke. We’ve been great for Victor and if the club accepted a £12m bid then what’s the problem? Southampton will be offering to double or treble his wages but this parasite wants his cut of an even bigger pie it seems.
