Uefa’s incredible playable pitches, diversionary bans

426

Having seen European football played on what could easily be mistaken for a swimming pool, I would be surprised if Uefa postponed Wednesday’s game Quarabag-Celtic game. Champions League and Europa League football takes place on pitches which are unplayable every season.

The combination of clubs travelling thousands of miles, crammed fixture schedules, competitors from hundreds of towns, many of which are not in natural grass growing regions, forces match supervisors to turn a blind eye. If the pitch in Baku is truly in a bad shape, the best Celtic can achieve is to have the game moved to an alternative venue., but even that would take an unlikely alignment of stars.

To some or other extent, everyone wants to control what the media reports about them. This is not in itself bad, but there are limits to the extent a football club, or any other group, should take this desire to control. Often for the reason that it will simply not work.

If some numpty reports that Ronny Deila said something off about Neil Lennon, and Ronny said no such thing, the numpty in question would find (found) himself banned from Celtic Park for using falsehoods to cause the club trouble. His newspaper would have to suck it up, as they were in the wrong.

When it comes to journalists reporting an unwelcome fact the rules are completely different. BBC’s Chris McLaughlin, who was banned from Ibrox days after reporting police arrested fans at the Hibs – Newco game for sectarian offenses has been publicly backed by the BBC.

The Corporation eventually backed Jim Spence after he was subject to significant intimidation for using the phrase “some people will tell you, the club that died” in connection to Rangers, but from the outside they appeared to be on the back foot early on.

In his excellent interview with Phil Mac Giolla Bhain, published today, Spence talks about this, saying “It has been and still is a blatant attempt to coerce and ultimately take journalists livelihoods away from them”.

Banning journos work in some circumstances: when they are factually wrong and doing you harm, but if they are factually correct, you’re handing the perceived enemy the initiative, and the high moral ground. A comment about a small number of arrests for sectarian offenses, which few people read, has now been magnified beyond comprehension. It’s a complete PR disaster of their own making, Newco should buy-in some expertise in this area.

Incredibly, when Craig Whyte made himself busy banning journos who reported what he was up to, those who should have been most alarmed were so lustfully delighted at the bans and invitations to demonstrate, they didn’t stop to consider Whyte was diverting their attention.

I’m convinced that was always going to be the plan. I am sure it is no coincidence that the current share price is about the lowest it has been all year. The shares were also sold after the exchange closed last!

There has never been a recession so deep that you can’t get the working classes to pay for the way out of it.

  2. Walking away, oh dear.

Sevco were thrown into crisis tonight with the departure of Douglas Park from the blue room of unsurpassed dignity.

Park was the only member of the so-called Three Bears consortium to join the board following Dave King’s coronation in March.

The elderly Lanarkshire businessman never spoke in public about his director’s role but was pictured in the directors box at Sunday’s League Cup win over Peterhead.

    image: about:blank

    image: about:blank

With Dave King failing to back up his investment claims Park and his two fellow bears have put in two crisis loans of £1.5m to meet the April and May payrolls.

Rumours that Mr Park wasn’t seeing eye to eye with Mr King have surfaced in recent months with tonight’s shock news throwing the club into turmoil.

According to a club statement prepared by James Traynor’s Level 5 PR company ‘Mr Park feels he cannot at this time make a full contribution to the running of the Club and Company because of other commitments.’

Park’s son Graeme will replace dad on the Sevco board.

The coaching magnate stated: “I would like to put on record that although I held the position as Director for only a short period of time it has been an honour and a privilege to serve the Club and I will always be proud of the part I played in bringing this great institution back into the hands of those who have its best interests at heart.

“I am confident that going forward the Club is in good hands and will offer all my support to the Board in pursuing what is best for the Club. Rangers is hugely important to me and my family and I am delighted that Graeme is joining the Board.”

Mr Park is the second director to walk away since Mr King came to power with Chris Graham quitting three days after being appointed after his anti-Islamic comments were brought to light.

Tellingly there was no comment from Chairman King to thank Mr Park for his contribution. With King’s toxic reputation it’s unlikely that there will be a rush of respected businessmen wanting to be associated with a King led board.

Since taking control in the boardroom and being passed as fit and proper by the SFA Mr King has failed to make any investment in the troubled company.

    Morning,

I’m a sky customer and wanting to add BT sports, not loving to BT TV/bb cos I’ve got a good deal with sky. Has anyone on here managed to get a deal with BT to add on sports? Looks as tho it’s £23.99/m for HD, with activation fee! Can’t see any deals online and phoned BT there – but I knew more about the pricing than the idiot I spoke to, so I wasn’t able to negotiate a deal.

    Hail hail!

Sky are able to offer deals because they are overcharging in the first place….

  6. pabloh_AKA_NEIL LENNON

£23:95 a month including HD was the deal I got, they mentioned three other channels but I doubt if I’m interested in them, but yi never know.

That’s true, you can always cut costs with them if you try. BT having all the champions league is a real pain. Unbelievable sky sports increased prices after losing champions league, that’s why I cancelled that

  13. Yes, from what I hear Virginmedia are doing good deals, I’ve moved house in the last two months and there is no Virgin in my area (media that is) so sky has me by the Dennis Laws and there’s not much I can do about it, shame really, I liked Virgin.
