Ultimate test. Don’t stoop to their level

225

Let’s not be fooled by Barcelona’s home defeat to Alaves on Saturday. If they again rest Messi, Suarez, Iniesta and Jordi Alba, while contriving to miss the target with multiple chances from inside 10 yards, that result might stand as a guide, but I suspect we’ll see Leo, Luis, Andres and co. tonight. With a point to prove.

On the positive side, we’ve played away 26 games in the Champions League proper and avoided defeat only twice, including a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou. Barcelona also took until added time before scoring a winner against us there four years ago. They are formidable, but we appear to perform better when we know the enormity of the job.

We were back at Camp Nou for game six of the group stage in 2013. It was a dead rubber for Celtic and a must-win game for Barca. It did not go well. That experience is a marker for what can go wrong when you play one of the best teams ever to kick a spherical object.

When Brendan Rodgers perused our Champions League fixtures for opportunities to pick up points, he’ll not have invested too much hope in tonight’s game, but it will serve as the ultimate test for a group of players who look more and more like an impressive team with each passing week.

Let’s enjoy it.

Whoever thought that embarrassing yourself with a ludicrous statement was a wise response to a destabilising defeat should be told to walk away from the keyboard. Yesterday’s statement from across the city was cringe-worthy. Appealing to the lowest common denominator is easy, but you play to an ever-decreasing audience.

The alarm signs for Project Newco Rangers are blaring loud.  It will not end well.

Celtic’s response reads like they were listening to the Champions League anthem when writing it.  You don’t win a fight with an opponent who has nothing to lose. Don’t stoop to their level, it only contaminates you.  There will be more nonsense before the Project ends.  It won’t be pretty, but try to enjoy this spectacle too.

  1. Some hurting huns on snyde the night hahahahahaaaaaaa

Young hoops done very well earlier on there and i was surprised we finished the game looking a lot sharper than the home team.

  2. What is the Stars on

    Looking forward to this

Really think we will do well. .mind you that could mean losing 3 nil.

I think we will score and concede but I am not sure about the order or quantity of either

  3. Happy Roberts starts, need someone who can carry the ball and beat their initial press. I would have went 4-5-1 and had Rogic in there to help keep possession, but if you want to go 5 at the back you have to sacrifice someone. Huge pressure on that midfield centre 2. If we can avoid conceding the usual European away early goal, maybe we can get a foothold in the match.

  4. Our best weapon is – Our refusal!

Refuse to engage with the ‘local’ SMSM.

Don’t afford the ‘local’ SMSM any working facilities inside CP and instead, give the spare seats etc, to the homeless Celtic supporters with, scarves, Celtic taps, pies n bovril etc provided.

Our best weapon is, Our refusal.

Engage with the SMSM and, hostility will be the name of the game.

Who needs that in this day and age ?

    No more kowtowing.

Our best weapon is, Our refusal.

The SMSM have nothing but hatred to offer us so, cut them loose.

    More importantly…..

Thoughts and Prayers for all who are close

to, Lennon Toland the 5 year old who was tragically knocked doon by a car in the East End of Glasgow yesterday.

    So so sad.

    RIP Lennon Toland.

  5. I’m just delighted that we got to the CL group stages. I’d have happily settled for the Europa League and see if we could build from there.

Brendan has turned things around but I’m not sure we have improved significantly enough to compete with Barca and Man. City.

A win for us tonight would be mega, a draw would be very pleasing but if we lose, I hope it will not be a drubbing. We should take the game to Barca as best we can.

So, it’s off to the Bad Ass Cafe to cheer on the Hoops.

Speaking of cafes, any update on the new one beside the superstore.

5-4-1 is the only format to play against Barca ….. Surprised Gamboa is starting …..another master-stroke from Brendan …… Tell you this, he must rate him (bit of a gamboal) …. hahahahaha

The journalists’ fear, following the rantings of the loaf, is palpable …hahahahahahaha

    Can’t argue with them.

Just listening to the Alaves manager talk about how 5-4-1 has caused Barca the most problems over the last 25 years so there is a straw to cling to. Mind you Barca left Messi and Suarez on the bench so that probably helped more than any formation ever could.

Bhoys go on the park tonight to enjoy yourselves and even if we are loseing keep your heads up you are the famous Glasgow Celtic. Let the world see what a great club we are show Barcelona respect but no fear we have a great support who will be with you all the way win lose or draw we are proud of you.H.H.

  10. Brendan brought in 5 in Transfer window, all 5 play tonight. Must be some sort of record. It usually takes 18 months before you could call the team as belonging to new Manager. This can be called Brendan’s team tonight.

  11. Joe Filippis Haircut on

REGGIE We want to play there best team then if we win there can be no excuses. We are at the top table of European football lets dine on caviar and not burgers. H.H.

    Are Barça debt-free?

LOL the only person they dont owe cash to is Sports Direct.

  13. I’ve no issue with the team Brendan has picked. It’s the best he could have selected based on available resources. 100% concentration and discipline required from every Celtic player and let’s see what happens. We’re up against world beaters tonight, truly magnificent players. If we can get out with a draw I’ll be ecstatic. A respectable defeat would be OK. Whatever happens, it’ll be a great learning experience for our lads. Mon the hoops.

  14. Hebcelt,

Watched a few games in the Gellions, fairly Celtic friendly. Anyone in Inverness will tell you where the pub is. Usually good band on after the game Scottish folk type stuff if you are into that sort of stuff.

“Barcelona are the second most valuable football team behind Real Madrid and their infrastructure is pretty much different from all other big clubs. They are owned by their supporters who have a say in selecting club president etc. But still Barcelona have big debt on their head with around $500 million in total.”

    Oh well…

    C’MON the BOULD BHOYS !!!

  16. GreeninbingleyinOslo on

That’s a good line-up. Paddy looked like a player coming back from an injury layoff on Saturday but the minutes he had on the park will hopefully have sharpened him again.

Whatever happens tonight we are on the right road. Brendan knows where he wants us to be and, more importantly, how to get there. He is at home in this company and that will be passed on to the players.

We can get a result tonight.

Having said that, my stomach is doing somersaults.

    Mon the Hoops!

  17. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

If we are contesting the 3rd place for post Xmas Europa League with BMG then our results over 2 legs against them is vital. It also might come down to goal difference after that so keeping it tight is important tonight regardless of the match score if we lose then the odd goal would be great HH

  18. AuroraBorealis79 on

City Munchengladbach game postponed due to bad weather. Didn’t realize Manchester was in Siberia.

  19. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

    Here we go …

My beloved Hoops team against the team I’ve loved watching ever since Messi was a mop haired teenager in a baggy strip and Pep introduced the world to tiki taka .

Let’s do ourselves proud Celtic – COYBIG

  20. Some of our players are looking for an extra couple of seconds on the ball, you don’t get it at this level.
