VAR and the much needed extra spend

146

There is a bit of debate in the press today, echoing some online chat, about whether Scotland should continue with its ineffective implementation of VAR.  VAR was disastrously implemented in late 2022, was relaunched with more acceptable guidance after the World Cup in December of that year, but has been plagued by poor technology, slow decision-making, and inconsistencies.

Some of the above items are nothing to do with poor standards.  Slow decision-making than elsewhere is a factor or cheaper technology.  If we want improvements, we will have to pay for more cameras and better tech.  This is not a budget buster and could be implemented next season, if Premiership clubs are prepared to pay a tad for it.

Crawford Allan, who was responsible for the implementation of VAR, will be gone by the start of the new season.  He should not be the only one out of the door.  Fresh talent is needed, even if we need to import it from a more experienced environment abroad.

Our referees want VAR because without it the pathway to Uefa and Fifa competitions will be closed to them.  They will resist a talent import but it is not their game to control and there is no shame is admitting we are a small pond with limited experience and talent.  Our top clubs say as much each transfer window.

Any change that hopes to improve VAR from this point is going to cost clubs money.  My fear is that stasis has set in at both the SFA and many top-flight clubs.  Would the likes of Aberdeen, one of our richer clubs, really vote to spend more money to improve the product? Here is a £1 deposit casino, offering a budget-friendly option for those seeking entertainment.

  1. Clunks,

    Totally agree.

In fact anyone who choses to open their ears and eyes will see it.

TikTok is not the enemy within.

It’s all about control and controlling what we watch.

PS : My old ZTE phone was far superior to my current Samsung. It picked up where others couldn’t.

  2. My huwaei phone was head and shoulders above all the apple and samsung phones I owned

    And only cost £150

    I still miss it

  3. If it was just about control- why only Tik Tok?

    Why not control all of them- Facebook, X , Snapchat, Instagram etc;

    They can all spread disinformation.

The more plausible conclusion, in the absence of direct evidence, it is either

    a) An attempt to deter Chinese espionage or

    b) AN attempt to deter Chinese domination of the market

But it’s definitely more to do with the Chinese than social control.

What have you lost when you lose Tik Tok?

You can get dancing kittens anywhere.

  4. SFTB

    It neither

    a) An attempt to deter Chinese espionage or

    b) An attempt to deter Chinese domination of the market

It more to do with control

As in control over what information is allowed to be broadcast

As we saw over covid when the post went against whatever rules, then it was flagged with a giant misinformation thing

Its the ability to control what is allowed and what should be censored that is the issue

    Not dancing cats lol

TikTok is a media platform of choice for many. It shows topical issues that the MSM would never dare cover.

That is why establishments do not like it.

It’s all about control and if you have been reading the room it comes as no surprise.

    Be wary be very wary.

    —-

I’d be interested on your thoughts on this potential banning.

I’m of the opinion that phones etc give people access to loads/all your info – held on your phone or whatever – if you can get into it.

Lots of apps are willing to share this info and we now have to tick a ‘share cookies’ box.

A book I read a few years ago written about 10 years before said Dictionary.com had about 1-200 cookies – 1-200 odd businesses who had your info and could use it as they wanted or sell it as they wanted.

10 or so years later a company who are (imho) at least partly owned by the Chinese government is on a massive percentage of the American public’s phone.

    What’s your thoughts?

  7. MAJESTIC HARTSON

All of our phones, laptops, ipads etc sell our info data and location

Why does it make a difference whether its uk/usa based with iphones and windows or chinese based with huawei or whatever

We , when we sign in and accept the terms are accepting that our data is gona get sold

  8. control the data

    Clunks,

I hope you can fill in any gaps of my knowledge as I’m not very tech savvy.

I remember about 15 years ago a scientist for Hotpoint, or similar saying their biggest issue was China stealing their knowledge and reproducing it at a fraction of the most.

It reminded me of an ‘article’ in The Sun (I know) showing products from the west that had almost identical Chinese versions. The Rolls Royce looked a bit boxy but was decent.

If it’s true that the Chinese government wants ownership of a part of every company, the difference in a UK company – Celtic, B&Q, Asda – gaining access to your usage rather that the Chinese government is pretty big

  12. From sftb post 12.16

In an extraordinary achievement for Scottish football, Celtic FC has catapulted into the elite circle of the top 20 football clubs worldwide in terms of shirt sales for the year 2023. This remarkable feat is not just a testament to the club’s massive fanbase but also highlights the successful merchandise partnership with Adidas. Celtic’s inclusion in this prestigious list marks a milestone, showcasing the club’s global appeal and the thriving relationship with its kit manufacturer.

Celtic’s journey to the top echelons of global merchandise sales has been nothing short of spectacular. With €34 million in shirt sales, the club has outperformed numerous football giants and has become the only Scottish club to make it to the list. [ESPN]

Since the inception of their partnership in 2020, Adidas and Celtic have set new standards in football merchandise, blending innovative designs with the club’s rich heritage. The 2023 milestone is perhaps the best testament to what has been described as Celtic’s most fruitful merchandise partnership.

Celtic finds itself in illustrious company, rubbing shoulders with football’s elite in the merchandise sales league. The list is topped by Barcelona, with sales amounting to €179 million, followed closely by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Notably, Celtic’s inclusion signifies its status not just within Scottish football but on the global stage, being among renowned clubs from the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, and beyond.

The bhoys’ significant achievement underscores the club’s position as having the largest fanbase in Scotland,. The iconic green and white hoops have become more than just a team uniform; they are a symbol of pride and history that fans around the world recognise.

The mutual benefits from this collaboration between Adidas and Celtic have been evident, raising anticipation about the potential renewal of their agreement. Although there has been no news on that front as of yet.

I’ve realised I’m not very succinct (ever) and I’m a slow typer on my phone, so I’ll leave it at that 😂

  14. SFTB,

Facebook is so vetted and regulated that you can’t even use the word hun without incurring a ban.

Twitter or X is moderated by Elon Musk. It is less transparent, less reliable, less friendly and less credible.

TikTok is a different ballgame and the authorities don’t like it.

They want to ban TikTok but import thousands of electronic devices or car parts into the country. There is a far greater chance of data theft via electronic devices and servers than reading or posting on TikTok.

TikTok is not the Elephant in the room that the establishment would have us believe.

It’s true: You can fool all of the people some of the time, ( As has been proven ) but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.

My thoughts on Western governments, especially the UK and US banning TikTok reminds me of a giant squirrel.

EG: The Chinese state owned company Cnooc own one of the biggest, if not the biggest producer in the UK North Sea. So big that the Buzzard complex had to notify the Chancellor prior to any planned shutdown.

In fact Buzzard phase 2 has commenced production in the last few years.

State owned Chinese company Petroineos currently own the huge Grangemouth oil refinery.

And yet they discuss banning big bad TikTok .

There is no logical rationale bar media control.

    Cheers and HH.
