VAR and the much needed extra spend

146

There is a bit of debate in the press today, echoing some online chat, about whether Scotland should continue with its ineffective implementation of VAR.  VAR was disastrously implemented in late 2022, was relaunched with more acceptable guidance after the World Cup in December of that year, but has been plagued by poor technology, slow decision-making, and inconsistencies.

Some of the above items are nothing to do with poor standards.  Slow decision-making than elsewhere is a factor or cheaper technology.  If we want improvements, we will have to pay for more cameras and better tech.  This is not a budget buster and could be implemented next season, if Premiership clubs are prepared to pay a tad for it.

Crawford Allan, who was responsible for the implementation of VAR, will be gone by the start of the new season.  He should not be the only one out of the door.  Fresh talent is needed, even if we need to import it from a more experienced environment abroad.

Our referees want VAR because without it the pathway to Uefa and Fifa competitions will be closed to them.  They will resist a talent import but it is not their game to control and there is no shame is admitting we are a small pond with limited experience and talent.  Our top clubs say as much each transfer window.

Any change that hopes to improve VAR from this point is going to cost clubs money.  My fear is that stasis has set in at both the SFA and many top-flight clubs.  Would the likes of Aberdeen, one of our richer clubs, really vote to spend more money to improve the product? Here is a £1 deposit casino, offering a budget-friendly option for those seeking entertainment.

  1. The idea that offside can be decided on millimetres is fanciful.

I’ve made the point before that it is possible to be offside while being further away from the centre of the goal line than any number of opposing defenders. You do not need to be Euclid or Pythagoras to understand this concept. You gotta know yer angles. It is a generic flaw in the rules as currently written. Compounded, one by the ex post facto addition of lines (by poor quality technology) across the screen, the use of still photography, (which isnt really photography) and the incompetence of the officials applying said techniques and technology. (See Jota against Motherwell) There are solutions to that paradox but probably way beyond the ken of IFAB, or the SFA.

Offside and handball rules should be based on ‘clear advantage’ subjective still I know but easier to understand and apply.

  4. The answer is that it was Big Jock’s last time being in charge in a game against the Dead club. Big Jock ultimately left at the end of the season just in case there is any confusion.

  7. At Tynecastle recently we saw how an ill disposed VAR official could influence a game’s result. Even with technically enhanced VAR the very same scenario could unfold. The problem may well lie with the individuals rather than the technology.

However, Real are pretty stupid too…

“Last week, an Instagram post that was quickly deleted from Madrid’s official account featured a photo of Vinicius Jr kissing the Real Madrid badge. Underneath, there was a ‘sticker’ depicting five stages of humans’ evolution from apes. Below were the words ‘Vini Vici”

  12. The problem we have with change to SFA. is that we need the support of a majority of other clubs. Celtic sponsored change vary rarely attracts support of other clubs. It was ever thus.

Maybe the other clubs have a large group of funny handshakers among there numbers. The blazers are a clue.

  13. Paul 67,

VAR is here to stay. It is a cornerstone of UEFA’s governance.

I would pay little regard to the English FA cup ( Not compulsory ) , the Carabao cup ( until semi final stage ) and their Championship. They like a wee bit of falsely taking back control.

No, our aspiration to be a European force means we must continue with VAR. Of course there must be improvement, but we cannot go back if we want to move forward.

    HH.

  14. VAR is here to stay until and unless FIFA/UEFA decides it goes. I can’t see that happening in the near future – a Scotland unilateral opt-out is a risible suggestion for all sorts of reasons that are self-evident. However I believe that there could be minor modifications that could make the system more workable and understandable to the watching public.

There are absolute decisions, e.g. being caught speeding – you are either speeding, or, you are not – you can’t be marginally speeding’, and so with decisions involving offside, ball out of play and ball over the goal-line. The first mentioned causes the most consternation among fans and pundits alike and needs to be modified. I have heard of a trial being run by UEFA (can’t find the piece again) whereby offside will only be given if there is clear daylight between an attacker and the last man – this is common sense finally coming into play. The current situation where an offside decision is given by VAR on the basis that a part of a head, shoulder, knee, or toe is ludicrous in the extreme. A shaded area showing separation between the two players would be just as easy to insert and fairness and understanding can be restored.

Turning to subjective decisions where the referee has to decide on the degree of infringement, e.g. tackles outside and inside the penalty-box, there is in my opinion good reason to give the on-field referee more ‘clout’ when these things occur, and, as much as possible, take away what Brendan called “the game being refereed from outwith the field of play”

If a referee, up with play, has given a decision, the VAR referee should only be asking (in the earpiece) “did you see that incident clearly, and are you happy with your decision?” If the referee says positively “yes”, then VAR should ‘butt out’. A referee is totally involved in all that goes on the field of play in a way that someone in a studio miles away, can never be – he is part of the game – he will notice/hear any bad behavior/vendettas off the ball, as well as on. The only exception would be if a foul is committed and given in close proximity to the penalty-box line. Happening at speed the referee might need VAR help to decide if it was inside, or, outside the box. In this way VAR would enhance the referee’s on-field subjective decision to award the foul, with an accurate absolute decision – free-kick, or, penalty.

Where there’s a will there’s a way – perhaps a motto for the Scottish football authorities – time to stop hiding behind Ernie Walkeresque and Jim Farryesque gobbledygook

An open culture where professionals are chosen for their knowledge ofthe game not thur tainted love for Scotland’s Shame.

Until Scotland stands up for the values of the game we’ll be stuck with the hunned-up compromised nuggets typified by the Bonkle Bawbag.

  18. Talking about taking back control.

The USA imports from China continue to hit new highs.

The UK imports from China keep going up , especially after Brexit , notably Electronic goods and Car products

Not to mention people, especially in the Universities.

And yet what is the establishment answer to this scenario. Ban TikTok.

TikTok is a media platform of choice for many. It shows topical issues that the MSM would never dare cover.

That is why establishments do not like it.

It’s all about control and if you have been reading the room it comes as no surprise.

    Be wary be very wary.

Tik Tok hasn’t quite fallen into the same regulatory practices as the other social media platforms

That ^^^ and the fact its majority chinese owned means that like huwaei (best phone I ever owned) the powers that be are trying to edge it out

As it was the 2nd most downloaded social app of 2023 (outstripping facebook by 16 million downloads and lagging behind instagram by only 7 million) its now a little too large and has too much momentum to be stopped by the traditional methods

As the US brands are now making $$$$ from advertising their wares

Expect more underhand VAR type practices to try and edge it out…

  21. Tik Tok hasn’t quite fallen into the same regulatory practices as the other social media platforms

As in the govt’s of the western world cant control what is and isnt allowed to be posted on the platform

Thats a huge problem to control the flow of information and what the public can can cant talk about – see covid (which is where most western social media helps)

I expect that in the next 18 months tik tok will overtake both facebook and insta in the downloaded apps metric

I would also think that the western govt’s will flood it with bots and ai generated content to kill the credibility of its content

Killing the trust of its user base

Something to look forward to and an escape from the Texas misery heat in July – all good.
