Here’s how it works. Celtic tell agents the profile of players they are looking for, who subsequently send their client’s CVs and DVDs back. If one fits the profile (for example: a central defender, with pace, wage budget £X, transfer budget £Y), then he is retained for consideration.
Some retained for consideration make it onto ‘the list’. Celtic actively pursue these players, usually more than one per requirement, as they know how deals can fall through. If players start to drop off the list, either because they have not performed to standard when scouted, or Celtic’s approach is declined, names are added to the list from those retained for consideration.
That ‘retained for consideration’ folder generates more advertising revenue than anything else in football. Lots of people are incentivised to link a name to Celtic (or many other clubs). The agent can legitimately tell a journalist he’s spoken to Celtic about a player, the journalist can then trail the transfer saga for weeks, its rise, climax and last minute hitch, will generate millions of hits. This is called Click Bait, you are the target.
Consider the near certainty of the reporting that Jelle Vossen was about to sign for Celtic. The Genk striker matches Celtic’s criteria in several areas: he’s a striker, they will be able to afford his wages and transfer fee, they have received information on him. Hundreds of articles have been written on this basis alone, generating thousands of pounds of advertising revenue.
The problem is, Jelle Vossen isn’t on ‘the list’. His CV is stuck in a folder somewhere at Lennoxtown, not currently under consideration. Celtic are not actively pursuing his services.
Danny Wilson? Never made it onto the list. His agent got a courteous response “months ago” when first asked if there was interest. Danny’s CV is in the same folder Jelle’s is in. When I spoke to a senior source at the club yesterday, the player is so far off radar, the source couldn’t even remember Wilson’s name when I asked about Celtic being rejected in favour of a newco.
The PR behind the message sent out with Wilson’s signing was inspired. Some of the reporting was shameful. The days of being able to twist a story against Celtic without consequence are gone. The BBC recanted one story (at the insistence of reporter Alasdair Lamont). Sky Sports News gave Neil McCann a stage for utter guff on Wilson rejecting Celtic, while much of the print and online media quickly moved on, not caring one way or the other.
The episode reminded me of the almost universal line the media took the day Neil Lennon resigned – unhappy at Celtic’s transfer budget, apparently. This message was never attributed but it was reported so widely, you could trace the manipulation. We even had the Usual Brigade of ex-Celts ready to express their disappointment at the club’s financial decisions. Economic illiterates, to a man. The story was nonsense and almost certainly came from the same source as Wilson’s rejection.
There are strikers on Celtic’s list, but if the agent’s talking to the media, chances are, he’s not talking to Celtic anymore.
Here’s a Bob Dylan singing Like a Rolling Stone, especially for Neil McCann. How does it feel………?

I don’t hear Norway bleating about their revenues falling through the floor,so why are ours?
I smell a rat.
Similar to the one where the chancellor decides to cut £12bn from welfare at the same time as giving his fatcat City chums a £13m discount on RBS.

You should be so lucky.
LIAM HENDERSON has handed Celtic a pre-season injury sweat after ending his loan spell with Rosenborg on crutches.
The Parkhead midfielder is on loan with the Norwegian side until the weekend when he is due to return to Glasgow.
But he faces a scan to find out the extent of a knee injury after hobbling out of Rosenborg’s 7-1 Norwegian Cup win over Tromsdalen and leaving the ground on crutches.
Rosenborg manager Kare Ingebrigtsen said: “He took a knock on his leg and couldn’t continue.
“He goes back to Celtic after this weekend and it seems unlikely he will able to play any part in his final game for us against Molde this weekend.
“We will have to wait until he has his tests and our doctor, Jon Olav Drogset, will discover the extent of his injury.”
Henderson’s stint in Norway has been disappointing after getting off to an excellent start by netting three goals in his first five games.
The Scotland Under-19 internationalist has been limited to late substitute appearances and has failed to start a Norwegian league match.
And finally before I hit my cot for a few hours,
Jelly Vossen had a pretty good record with Genk.
KRC Genk 2010–11 37 20
2011–12 36. 20
2012–13 32 17
2013–14 38 12
Maybe tailed off slightly in his last season but when they won the title in 2012 he out scored his striking partner.
Some fella by the name of Benteke. Aye,that one.
Go get him,Celtic. Get him fired up and banging them in.
CELTIC target Marcel Halstenberg has insisted he wants to stay at St Pauli for another season before earning a big-money move
The Parkhead side have been strongly linked with a transfer for the 23-year-old left-back, but face competition from two other German sides.
But they have been dealt a setback in their pursuit of the player after Halstenberg revealed he wanted to remain at the Hamburg outfit.
He said: “The situation is that I am happy at St Pauli and want to stay here.
“I have decided to say no more about possible transfers because I want to give it full throttle for my remaining year at St Pauli.
“The prospect of a transfer to a bigger club in a year is of course attractive.
“But right now I want to take the next step with St Pauli.
“I feel really comfortable here and I would have to consider any change in my team very carefully.”
Hannover and Red Star Leipzig are also keen on Halstenberg, who enjoyed an excellent season in Bundesliga II.
St Pauli have made it clear they are in no rush to sell their star player and would be prepared to allow him to leave for nothing once his contract runs down in a year.

CELTIC target Jelle Vossen is to be offered a new five-year contract by Genk as the Belgian club launch a last ditch bid to try to keep him.
Vossen is expected to snub the new deal and push for a move having already spoken of his admiration for Celtic. He is due to thrash out his future with Genk officials next week.
The 26-year-old was on loan at Middlesbrough last season – scoring nine goals and playing in their Championship play-off final defeat to Norwich City – and they had been considering a permanent deal.
But they have cooled their interest after letting their option to sign Vossen for £2.4m lapse as they now look at other targets.
Celtic still won’t have it all their own way in the pursuit of Vossen, though. Sheffield Wednesday are on his trail while Club Brugge are bidding to sign him as well.
Just thought I would copy the 3 good news Celtic stories from the Herald today :-))

Good morning friends and a Big Happy Friday from a drier than predicted but still rather grey looking East Kilbride. I’m sure autumn will be much better ;-)
Sandman@00.10hrs,
Thanks very much for your reply. Personally I hate the term green Hun, it is like the “red tory” insult. No real substance with its only intention to insult and divide.
In my opinion a real Tim is one who makes the time and effort to actually go to the games. Obviously this is only applicable to those supporters who can financially afford to go and the geography permits.
What imo does not constitute a real Tim is a supporter who can go but chooses to sit behind a computer. No matter if he is loud and declares his undying allegiance to the club and its roots at every opportunity, at work or in the pub.
As for criticism, wearing the jersey does not automatically command respect, as in any walk of life respect has to be earned. I would much prefer a full stadium with criticism coming from the stands if it is deserved.
We have all showed our disagreement with playing one up front, a dubious substitution, incorrect tactics or an actual or perceived lack of effort. ( it does or used to happen )
How should supporters display thier dissatisfaction or disappointment.? Stay away . Never.
Should we clap and cheer when we think the opposite?
I have no issue with players giving their all but having a bad game eg EA comes into that category, he never hides and deserves encouragement .
On the other hand players like Liam Miller let the club and its supporters down big time. I reserve the right to criticise him and players who disrespect the club and more importantly its fans.
To summarise, I guess we will have to agree to disagree.
HH to all supporters of our great club.
Really glad I had time this morning for a wee scroll back, meaning I read this…

Hip Hip
Like a lot of people on here I’d like us to sign a striker before the qualifiers. However, even without one, I think we should be in good shape to qualify. I’m reasonably confident that Griffiths and Scepovic can score goals at that level. Last year Scepovic scored twice in six Europa League games (5 as a starter). Having Brown back will be a huge boost to us this year and we will also have Armstrong, Mackay Steven, Boyata and Forrest who didn’t play last year. On top of all of that there are the players who are massively improved in the last 12 months (Griffiths, Bitton and Johansen).
Luckily for us another thing that should work in our favour is just about all of the teams that we could meet in the qualifiers will lose their best players this summer. Malmo have lost 4-5 players from last year’s team, Zagreb lost Duje Cop, Marcelo Brozovic and Angelo Henriques will go back to Man Utd, Lech’s best player is Karol Linetty who is supposed to join Tottenham in the next few days and Ludogorets just sold their Brazilian right back to Schalke for 5m. I’m sure whoever we get (particularly in the final round) will give us a tough game but we should have enough to get past these teams. The one I would like most to avoid would definitely be Zagreb.
Nielbhoy – where are you – I’ve watched a few Blackthroats whilst fishing in Assynt around Inchnadamph
First laff of the evening from Hrvatski jim, thanks for reposting Jobo. Have I missed the weather forecast. Have a good one.
Very quiet this morning….is everybody sleeping.

My fault – scared everyone away by mentioning fishing!
Got the day off today to travel to Derry for a wedding tomorrow.
Any of our QQN denizens of the ole country point out a few places for a wee Friday night in Derry?
Well, while everyone is sleeping.

@anyonebutceltic: One of the reasons John Fallon was asked to do the foreword is he is a defiant Lanarkshire Tim. Lots of them around.
HH jamesgang
Yep – I caught a whiff of expectation management yesterday. This is not new, in fact it has been a regular occurrence during the ‘window’.
I do believe we have a decent squad, if they are all fit and firing on all cylinders, but that is hard to achieve. In all honesty I would be happy if we got a striker and back up for Izzy.
TGM.. cheer up, we’re keeping the elvis basher
@anyonebutceltic: Finally, for now, it’s a massive honour to have a real legend like John Fallon do the foreword. He’s not just a “name”, he tells the truth.

Yeah, I agree….a message from the board, don’t expect too much(again).
We do have a good squad at present….but how long that will last, who knows.
I have promised to give Big Peter a bit of slack this season, so lets just say…im underwhelmed.

Waterloo street in Derry you can’t go wrong ..Tracey’s ,peadars, gweedore ,dungloe and castle bar.
All good pubs with live music ..the people’s music ✊
If your there on Sunday I think there is a function on which I seen advertised..the brilliant cruncher playing .
Anyway Waterloo street you won’t go wrong, peadars the pick of the bunch for me.
Woukd love to see the lists at Lennoxtown of all these strikers
There must be two lists
1. The lists of goalscoring strikers given to lawell from managers that end up in bin
2. The lists of non scoring strikers from park and approved by lawell. The one that has been a failure and cost us CL money but keep lawell bonus intact
The failure of our transfers for CL last year was a joke The embarrassment of legia must not happen again
If it does its corporate failure and people must go
One failure against teams with lest
What time is the post delivered at parkhead. Get those DVD checked. Mr 67 have you not said to Pedro about a android box for games in the kerrydale bar save paying sky and a few quid extra for transfers.
