Vossen not on list, lessons for Sky, BBC and others

652

Here’s how it works.  Celtic tell agents the profile of players they are looking for, who subsequently send their client’s CVs and DVDs back.  If one fits the profile (for example: a central defender, with pace, wage budget £X, transfer budget £Y), then he is retained for consideration.

Some retained for consideration make it onto ‘the list’.  Celtic actively pursue these players, usually more than one per requirement, as they know how deals can fall through.  If players start to drop off the list, either because they have not performed to standard when scouted, or Celtic’s approach is declined, names are added to the list from those retained for consideration.

That ‘retained for consideration’ folder generates more advertising revenue than anything else in football.  Lots of people are incentivised to link a name to Celtic (or many other clubs).  The agent can legitimately tell a journalist he’s spoken to Celtic about a player, the journalist can then trail the transfer saga for weeks, its rise, climax and last minute hitch, will generate millions of hits.  This is called Click Bait, you are the target.

Consider the near certainty of the reporting that Jelle Vossen was about to sign for Celtic.  The Genk striker matches Celtic’s criteria in several areas: he’s a striker, they will be able to afford his wages and transfer fee, they have received information on him.  Hundreds of articles have been written on this basis alone, generating thousands of pounds of advertising revenue.

The problem is, Jelle Vossen isn’t on ‘the list’.  His CV is stuck in a folder somewhere at Lennoxtown, not currently under consideration.  Celtic are not actively pursuing his services.

Danny Wilson?  Never made it onto the list.  His agent got a courteous response “months ago” when first asked if there was interest.  Danny’s CV is in the same folder Jelle’s is in.  When I spoke to a senior source at the club yesterday, the player is so far off radar, the source couldn’t even remember Wilson’s name when I asked about Celtic being rejected in favour of a newco.

The PR behind the message sent out with Wilson’s signing was inspired.  Some of the reporting was shameful.  The days of being able to twist a story against Celtic without consequence are gone.  The BBC recanted one story (at the insistence of reporter Alasdair Lamont).  Sky Sports News gave Neil McCann a stage for utter guff on Wilson rejecting Celtic, while much of the print and online media quickly moved on, not caring one way or the other.

The episode reminded me of the almost universal line the media took the day Neil Lennon resigned – unhappy at Celtic’s transfer budget, apparently.  This message was never attributed but it was reported so widely, you could trace the manipulation.  We even had the Usual Brigade of ex-Celts ready to express their disappointment at the club’s financial decisions.  Economic illiterates, to a man. The story was nonsense and almost certainly came from the same source as Wilson’s rejection.

There are strikers on Celtic’s list, but if the agent’s talking to the media, chances are, he’s not talking to Celtic anymore.

Here’s a Bob Dylan singing Like a Rolling Stone, especially for Neil McCann. How does it feel………?

    Night sweet pea!

£8m. Mentol. It’s also why any bids for VVD should START at double that amount. And finish at triple the amount.

With the greatest respect who constitutes a green Hun and what is your criteria for a real Tim

    HH.

    ================================

Green Hun – anyone professing fondness for Celtic who boos a player in the Hoops, echoing the Rangers support’s ‘We Deserve Better’ banner. You may feel the club owes you in relative terms for your time and money invested in Celtic but save your ire for the board; no real Tim would ever boo the jersey despite their irritation or dislike for the player wearing it. A real Tim wishes nothing but the best for every Hooped hopeful.

The man in the shirt is living out your impossible dream. Berating a Celtic player on the park with that sinister mob mentality that has pervaded the stands in recent years is Hunnish, childish and traitorous.

Celtic has been a joy to me throughout the years. All that goes on around the club is up for debate and discussion, often disagreement. But for 90 minutes you shoud be kicking every ball with the players and willing them on to legendary feats, sharing in their special moments with the vicarious thrill of it, as you did when you were 10, as you should still be doing when you’re 70.

You should not be verbalising your two-bit ill-conceived, unqualified bitter analysis of a player’s preformance second-by-second for no other reason to slaughter the guy.

Green Huns might think they deserve better but what they don’t deserve is the privilege of watching Celtic.

  4. Hooper?

Great striker. Still a surprising signing I think.

    But if true, welcome home!

I never took to stokes since the time he knocked us back to go to Sunderland ( he had been banging in goals for Falkirk on loan and celtic seemed the logical move)

Water under the bridge, but then he bashed elvis. That was the last straw.

Any report I read linking us with a player try are always putting in the Huns are keeping tabs aswel

Trying their best to prove to everyone that us and them can attract the same kind of players.. Load of bullsh*t

  7. Bada..,

Don’t beat yourself up about it, some people like to goad for a reaction then play the holy innocent when that reaction comes.

    Sandman,

I have no problem with supporters who turn up having a go at players, they pays their money for the privilege.

I consider green huns to be supporters/fans who use meeja arguments to attack the club, and supporters/fans who refuse to question authority.

  8. McGeady and Hooper would be mistakes, big mistakes. They are not any better than we have, really hope it’s speculation, backward step.

  9. wits,

Good to read an expert’s view, rather than leaving our management team to make the decisions…

  11. Proudbhoy

Totally agree. This looks like agents throwing names around their player and hoping one will stick.

I think the strategy has changed slightly. I suspect we will see few project signings and any that are will be a few hundred grand at most. The last few have been very costly and some are impossible to shift!

Derk is one of the strangest signings in recent times. His current manager actually warned us off him saying he was injury prone and we ignored his advice and shelled out around €3m for him and a healthy weekly wage. I don’t remember ever a manager putting another club off one of his players for being injury prone. Surely if he was you keep your mouth shut and get rid and take the cash. De Boer has been proven right. Huge disappointment for me. Was genuinely excited when we signed the Flying Dutchman. Had heard great things about him but he proved to be one of the biggest bottle merchants to wear the Hoops. I can’t forgive players who do not give 100% in the jersey. Hopefully Derk can be moved on along with anyone else Ronny feels is surplus we need the wages to bring in players who will burst a gut for this club.

I’m not overly convinced bringing mcgeady and hooper back is what we need but I’d say both players are better than Griffiths and Forrest in my opinion.

If I had choice of 2 players to return from Lenny era .. Big vic and Ki .

Both have looked to improve the most out of all the players we have moved on.

  13. WITS

I hear you regarding Stokes. I was unhappy he knocked us back but once in the Hoops I backed him. The issue with Stokes is where does he play? I am not convinced Ronny knows. He has tried him wide and behind the striker and briefly up front. For that reason and him not featuring much toward the end of the season I fear Stokes may be moving on.

    LB

  14. LB

Aye I’d go to the brazen head and give one of the locals the jersey before handing it to derk again.. Never seen a player as afraid on the pitch in my life.. Nervous Norris he should be re named.

As much as I want another signing or 2 if the budget is around 1m then I think ronnie is better off doing nothing until we get group stages and his budget may go upto 5m then.

Past couple of seasons I find it crazy the size of squad we have and wasteful we have been with money.

I could have saved Celtic a lot of money b4 they signed Daryl Murphy and tonev… 2 very poor players. Quick search of forums would have saved them money in sure on pukki and derk.

Not massive fan of loan deals but Hooper and janko on loan before the qualifier would help us a great deal.

  15. Stokes is gone I reckon and even thou I thought we got good value for him over the seasons I think his time is up.

In fairness to him thou up until Christmas he was player that impressed me most in new regime… Played Out of position , a lot better work rate and still chipping in with goals and assists.

Seemed to all go down hill when he was late returning from a trip to Dublin.

  16. 67 Heaven I take it you disagree, am I not allowed an opinion, I thought that’s how a blog worked.

Ok,I’ll expand, we’re talking about a player who can’t get a game for Norwich and a player who is not good enough for Everton, and doesn’t play for his country. McGeady is 30, you think he will improve?

So these players are the highest earners, yet not our best players.

Hoopers attitude was stinking the last season. I remember the good and the bad.

  17. Sid

Good points about age and attitude that’s why I would only prefer 1 season loan deal to start off..but both have the ability to do it on a weekly basis in the SPL that’s why I wouldn’t completely rule the out.

    God bless the tic

  18. Proudbhoy I’m not saying they’re bad players, but we don’t need high earners for the Domestic game, I would rather get Biton Gordon and Johansen on extended contracts,

    Forward thinking not back. HH

Give the DVDs and player info to a committee of men such as ex players TOHG, Davie Hay, Bertie Auld Willie Wallace along with John Collins & John Kennedy all overseen by RONNY and let them comment on if they see anything in what it takes to make it at Celtic ,THEN hand it on to those who do the business.
