Want a big name manager? Knock yourself out

210

The “we need a big name” Brigade always frustrate me when we are searching for a new manager.  There are so many qualities a manager needs, being well-known is not one of them, as Ange Postecoglou is dutifully illustrating.

A “name” makes life easier for the appointees.  Fans are always keen to see cash spent, and often the famous are the more expensive.  Appointing someone with name recognition takes the heat off for a while.  Contrast this to the reaction from some places to Ronny Deila getting the Celtic job in 2014, a young manager who over-achieved at a club most of us did not know how to spell (Stremsgodset).

Young Celtic fans will not be aware how big a name Liam Brady was when he took the Celtic job in 1991.  One of the most cultured midfielders in Europe, Brady starred for Arsenal and Juventus, a legend on the field, a quiet nonentity in the dugout.

If anything, John Barnes was an even bigger playing legend for Liverpool and England when he drove up Kerrydale St in 1999.  It transpired that goal in the Maracana was not proof positive of managerial abilities.  Roy Keane is also a big name, just ponder that for a minute.

Being tactically gifted, an effective communicator of ideas and instructions, as well as a working knowledge of a value market to strengthen your squad.  These are all high on my list.  You want a name to please the fans?  Knock yourself out.

If there is to be equal investment in women’s pretendy football, it would surely have to be on a self sustaining basis.

I have no interest in women’s football and as soon as I see my season ticket money being spent on the women’s team my season ticket card will be sent back in the first post.

Anyone know why the Dutch game is behind closed doors?

    —————

maybe because country wide covid restrictions are back in place. all venues close at 8pm.

I’m not sure Sevco are underperforming this season. In fact, if you look at the three and bit seasons since Slippy joined, this is slightly better than the first two years but far worse than last season.

It suggests that they overperformed last season and last season was very much an outlier.

Anyone know why the Dutch game is behind closed doors?

    ———-

The Netherlands has gone into partial lockdown for three weeks. Professional and amateur sporting events are taking place behind closed doors.

  11. Bertie done no to bad as a manager with the Maryhill Magyars for a few seasons ,it must have been great having him as your boss .

  12. Another wonderful tribute from Patrick Thistle

Everyone connected with Partick Thistle Football Club was truly saddened to learn of the passing of our two-time former manager, Bertie Auld.

A born and bred Maryhill man, brought up on Panmure Street, Bertie would be a Thistle ball boy in his youth and also turned out for Maryhill Harp ahead of establishing himself at Celtic Park.

Following a sterling playing career north and south of the border, which included the historic success as part of Celtic’s European Cup winning team in 1967, Bertie secured his first managerial appointment at Firhill in 1974.

Succeeding the great David McParland, Bertie’s arrival coincided with the advent of the Premier League for which Thistle just failed to make the cut. That meant a tilt at the First Division and Bertie would guide the Jags to the title the following season, as Rough, the Hansen brothers, Campbell, Anderson, Houston, McQuade, Somner et al ensured silverware 100 years on from the club’s formation, losing just two games in the process. In the first of three domestic cup semi-finals in four seasons, Thistle lost narrowly to Celtic in a League Cup last four tie at Hampden.

Thistle would finish 5th, 7th, 8th and 7th in four further top-flight seasons under Auld, and during his time at Firhill Bertie’s Jags would taste victory against Rangers no less than six times. There were cup thrills aplenty with some unforgettable Anglo-Scottish Cup ties and two Scottish Cup semi-finals, a 4-2 Hampden defeat against Aberdeen in April 1978 before a controversial exit in a replay against Rangers 12 months later, after Bobby Houston’s ‘winner’ in the initial tie was ruled out.

Bertie left to join Hibs in 1980 and soon after managed Hamilton too before returning to Firhill towards the end of season 1985-86, succeeding Benny Rooney to help ensure Thistle avoided a drop to the third tier, a puff of smoke appearing above the dugout from his pipe after a victory not an uncommon sight! However the arrival of Derek Johnstone as player-coach in the summer of ’86 meant Bertie’s second stay at the club would be a short one, little over 100 days, as he left Firhill as manager for the final time.

Bertie Auld’s talent, success, personality and character meant he was revered by supporters not only of the clubs he served, but across the Scottish football spectrum and beyond. The Thistle teams he moulded in the second half of the 1970s remain among the most fondly remembered in the club’s modern history and his win percentage just south of 40%, mostly achieved in the Premier League, is among the best ever achieved at Thistle.

The boy from Panmure Street, a true one-off, seemed destined to represent the red and yellow and he did so with distinction in those two managerial spells. Bertie Auld will forever have his own very special place in the history of Partick Thistle Football Club.

The love, thoughts and condolences of everyone at Partick Thistle FC are with Bertie’s family and friends at this terribly sad time.

Thanks bhoys, the game is terrible, the Dutch need to avoid defeat and play accordingly. Need to see what else is on offer

  14. GGH- The English wummans Premier league will soon get more TV money per year, than the SPFL ,BT,BBC,and Sky showing live games.

  16. Scotland’s U-21s being put through the mill by dominant Belgians. Still only 0-1.

Elyounoussi featuring for Norway. Virgil strolling about in dressing gown and slippers.

More action in Montenego- Turkey game at 1-1.

Agree that they took us all by surprise last season – they overperformed, we underperformed….and how!

Can we agree that they are underperforming on their overperformance? Tying myself in knots now. HH

  18. Skipping around here. Now watching Cameroon – Ivory Coast. 1-0 with 30 minutes to go. If result stays the same, Cameroon eliminate their opponents, who just need a draw, so now pretty desperate.

  19. When the Fraud left us he took the majority of the back room staff with him, those who refused tae go, even though he tried tae entice them, included big JK grandson of a true Celtic legend and Stevie Woods member of a well known Dumbarton republican family.

We were well aware he was for the Joe the toff so had Lenny on standby. His first game 34 hours after the Sheffield Wednesday fan bailed out was at swinecastle, this was followed on the Saturday by an SC trip tae Easter Road, not a happy hunting ground for the kid on Celtic supporter.

We won both games and Lenny tae give him his due gave all credit tae big John who picked the sides and the tactics.

Slippy on the other hand did a bader and stripped them bare leaving only the goalie coach, son of incidentally the Buddies goalie who will be fondly remembered for holding the ball when Albert Kidds first goal went in and celebrated with gusto world wide.

They literally have no back room staff and need someone tae take training. IMHO they will have a new manager before the weeks out.

Possibly we will be led tae believe, if we are gullible enough, the greatest manager in the world.

  20. JHB

According to the hun neighbours I overhear in the garden Sevco are indeed reverting to their former state.

The goalie is error strewn, Tav needs sold (again) Davis and Arfield are finished, Goldson is strolling around in slippers, Haji and Kent are back to 10 minute wonders (well, when they’re not injured), Morelos has spat the dummy oot, and Kamara looses value every time he plays.

At the moment only Barasic, Balogun and Aribo are playing consistently.

All of which is greatly at odds with Alex Rae who said yesterday that the new manager will inherit the strongest squad in the League by a country mile!

As Auldheid is fond of saying – we’ll see!

  21. Can we agree that they are underperforming on their overperformance? Tying myself in knots now. HH

You look like you need a hand. Here’s SG’s winning percentages by season

    2021/22 – 54%

    2020/21 – 79%

    2019/20 – 67%

    2018/19 – 56%

20% better than the other three seasons combined.

We’ll never know how they would have reacted to a season of pressure and playing in front of their own fans This time round but the stats would suggest, for whatever reason that last season was an outlier.
