Want a big name manager? Knock yourself out

210

The “we need a big name” Brigade always frustrate me when we are searching for a new manager.  There are so many qualities a manager needs, being well-known is not one of them, as Ange Postecoglou is dutifully illustrating.

A “name” makes life easier for the appointees.  Fans are always keen to see cash spent, and often the famous are the more expensive.  Appointing someone with name recognition takes the heat off for a while.  Contrast this to the reaction from some places to Ronny Deila getting the Celtic job in 2014, a young manager who over-achieved at a club most of us did not know how to spell (Stremsgodset).

Young Celtic fans will not be aware how big a name Liam Brady was when he took the Celtic job in 1991.  One of the most cultured midfielders in Europe, Brady starred for Arsenal and Juventus, a legend on the field, a quiet nonentity in the dugout.

If anything, John Barnes was an even bigger playing legend for Liverpool and England when he drove up Kerrydale St in 1999.  It transpired that goal in the Maracana was not proof positive of managerial abilities.  Roy Keane is also a big name, just ponder that for a minute.

Being tactically gifted, an effective communicator of ideas and instructions, as well as a working knowledge of a value market to strengthen your squad.  These are all high on my list.  You want a name to please the fans?  Knock yourself out.

  20. Good Morning – A Grand Day To Be A Celt…

    HOT SMOKED @ 8:11 PM,

Apologies, didn’t get a chance to comment last night.

    SFtBs @ 8:55 PM,

Now as you are aware we discussed the Chinese approach when these rumours came out at the end February 2019.

You regarded them as damning and asked me what I thought, I said there were various “versions” and it didn’t sit right with me.

Now I know you’ve done it but it’s worth highlighting what the fuss was at the time and what we know now.

The story went that BR had got a very lucrative direct approach from China and had secretly “tapped” up staff and players notably Moussa.

PL had got wind of it and – Version 1, got raging and pulled the plug on BR’s support – Version 2, PL had gone to DD about it, DD got raging and pulled the support on BR.

Both scenarios had BR being found out after the Odsonne transfer was completed.

So instead of adding to the smoke and mirrors let’s try to get real…

    1. All indicators seem to suggest after the signing of Odsonne that the Board indeed pulled there support for BR

    2. DD confirms in his interview that it was BR that told him about the approach from China, knocking on the head at once the clandestine operation presented and BR being found out by PL

    3. Celtic didn’t announce it at the time of his leaving but we later found out that BR had agreed to a huge compensation package when he signed his new contract in April 2017

    4. Although the Board were no longer backing BR after Odsonne, they kept it secret; neither the fans, manager, staff nor players new about this

    5. A year after BR’s new contract had been signed DD is on record as stating that he would give Arsenal permission to speak to BR if they wanted him to…

    https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11787/11338821/celtic-will-allow-arsenal-to-approach-brendan-rodgers-says-clubs-majority-shareholder-dermot-desmond

    6. Points 3 and 5 strongly indicate that at the signing of the new contract in April 2017 BR and Celtic PLC had agreed terms under which BR and his staff would leave if another Club approached

    7. Point 6 allowed for a smooth, win-win transgression for BR, staff and Celtic when the situation arose

    8. Mossa Dembele was sold by the Celtic Board in the 2018 Summer transfer window

    9. In February 2019 the Celtic Board gave Leicester City permission to speak BR regarding their vacant managers position

    10. Terms were agreed between Celtic, Leicester City, BR and staff in accordance with due protocol and the terms of BR’s April 2017 contract

    11. Celtic received 9 million pound in compensation for BR and his staff from Leicester City but didn’t announce it

    12. BR and his staff left Celtic for Leicester City at the end of February 2019

    13. The process outlined above is standard practice in Footballing circles and no evidence of anything untoward is revealed

    14. Despite Point 13, a campaign against BR was mounted in the MSM and Social media to spin that BR was duplicitous and had acted in bad faith against Celtic

    15. Some three weeks after it was agreed the Daily Telegraph reveals the details behind BR’s compensation package

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.fourfourtwo.com/amp/news/full-amount-compensation-revealed-leicester-take-brendan-rodgers-celtic

So there you have it. If the China story of February 2019 was not a complete lie then it is certainly spun to sound very different from what actually took place.

It was spun in such a way to wrongly suggest that BR worked in bad faith against Celtic.

All facts points suggest Celtic were more than happy to let BR and his team go and reap the compensation.

Celtic were more than happy to sell Moussa for a largish fee in the summer of 2018.

That being the case the “China Crisis” nonsense as I labeled it at the time seems a storm in a tea cup.

Yet it does leave a number of questions, not least of which, sources at the time claimed the China story came from sources within Celtic Park, who did this and why?

If the Chinese approach was not the reason for the “black” campaign against BR but rather part of it what was the real reason behind the character assassination.

If BR did not have the rug pulled out from under him because of the Chinese approach (and let’s face it all top managers were approached by the Chinese at the time including GVB at that time) then what was the real reason for the lack of backing

If BR did not have the rug pulled out from under him because of the Chinese approach (and let’s face it all top managers were approached by the Chinese at the time including GVB at that time) then what was the real reason for the lack of backing

    ———-

I guess we’ll never know or at least not until people from that time write memoirs

My own humble opinion is that BR had won everything he could win over 3 seasons in SPFL and wanted a challenge at a higher level

I expect talks took place behind the scenes with DD and PL to this effect

Maybe BR asked for very significant spending to have a good go in Europe and the board weren’t having it

We were already winning everything domestically, season tickets and commercial deals all time high

Maybe the board considered it and thought no can do because spending even 40/50 million in a window won’t guarantee European success and that kind of spending can’t be repeated in subsequent windows so if it doesn’t work out and BR then goes there’s nothing left in the kitty for a new manager and they were already minded that he was probably gonna move sooner or later

Or maybe they had already realized that BR would likely leave within a season and decided that backing him with funds would be futile since the next manager would want funds regardless

So they take a gamble that the present squad is good enough and wait for BR to make a move but he possibly stayed longer than they expected so middle of the 9 new management rather than end of the 8

They go for NL which I think was a mistake, certainly keeping him for 10 was

This means new manager NL has to retain players who expected to have a move and it all starts to unravel

  22. A fiver for your thoughts on

Just expanding on the above I feel this is what Paul’s alluding to in his leader

“ A “name” makes life easier for the appointees. Fans are always keen to see cash spent, and often the famous are the more expensive. Appointing someone with name recognition takes the heat off for a while. ”

    Sound familiar?

But ironically BR had bigger ambitions than the Board and they had to wait him out and let him go

Nothing to do with JHB banging his big drum about doing a runner from Slippy

Anyway we have a great manager in place now, I wasn’t convinced on his announcement but hat doffed to Ange he’s been a big surprise and I have high hopes for the future

He’s building a team playing quality football talking about raiding untapped markets for quality players at cheap prices bringing youth players through

I can picture DD and PL jigging around a table somewhere singing Hello Hello we’ve got our perfect Bhoy 😂

Until he asks next season to be backed in a transfer window

  25. Article from the sun courtesy of the huddleboard. Totally believable. Not written by Higgens at all. In fact we really need him in to sort out these pesky Celtic fans.

CELTIC ultras planned to cause violent disorder during the biggest climate march of Cop 26 after infiltrating a communist group, a senior cop has revealed.

Men linked to the Green Brigade swapped green flags for red ones during the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice, while posing as members of the Young Communist League.

But eagle-eyed cops spotted many of the men as members of the Parkhead support – who have recently protested against top cop Bernard Higgins becoming Celtic security chief – and placed a ring of steel around them.

They were eventually kettled by dozens of officers after stopping the march and trying to break out of their escort.

A senior officer said: “They wanted to abduct the whole parade and slow it down for a local issue when the eyes of the world were on us.

“We knew who most of them were, so that wasn’t going to happen.”

Cops immediately surrounded the aggressive group a week past Saturday, after tens of thousands of peaceful marchers, including Greta Thunberg, converged on Kelvingrove Park.

A senior cop said every other group marching, including Extinction Rebellion, had engaged with them before the iconic day to speak about their protest aims.

But the hooded, flag-waving YCL refused to have any contact with the officers – and intelligence revealed many were aligned with the Green Brigade.

The group stopped as they walked along St Vincent Street and tried to break out of their escort – so cops kettled them and removed them up a side street.

One said: “A lot of them were known to us, and not for Communist leanings. They were known for their allegiance to the Green Brigade.

“It’s easy to spot these people because you know they are going to be at best, non-compliant and at worst, violent.

“They were almost all Scots and while they were waving red flags that day, they’d normally be waving green ones.

“So we used containment – also known as kettling – to get them out of the way.

“They wouldn’t engage with us, they were intimidating to other people and refused to move, which could have caused congestion and injury.

“We had young people and elderly people on the march who were getting cold behind them.”

The senior officer said containment was only used twice during Cop 26, the other time against XR earlier that week.

He added: “Traditionally, kettling is very tight. But this time, we gave them loads of room. It was containment.”

Might be funny if it wasn’t so sinister.
