‘WE WERE JUST UNLUCKY,’ INSISTS HISTORY BHOY

HISTORY Bhoy James Forrest is not spending too much time looking back on his 450th first-team appearance for Celtic.

The evergreen 31-year-old winger chalked up the milestone outing when he came on just before half-time for the injured Liel Abada.

Forrest rolled back the years with a solid performance and set up one of the best chances of the game with an excellent delivery to the back post, but Giorgos Giakoumakis squandered the opening by bundling the ball past the post from four yards. A goal at that stage would have made it 1-1.

OFF TARGET…Giorgos Giakoumakis sends the ball wide from close range after a superb cross from James Forrest. Daizen Maeda gets a close-up view.

So, unfortunately, for the Scotland international there were no celebrations as the Hoops conceded two goals in the last 15 minutes to topple to a 2-0 loss to RB Leipzig that also saw them exit the Champions League.

Forrest, though, was far from downhearted and said: “I think the boys did really well throughout the game. Even when we went 1-0 behind, I thought we showed character and we were just unlucky.

“We created a lot of chances and gave everything. The quality was there, but obviously they were just more clinical with the chances they got and took a couple of them.

“I said after the first couple of games that you could see with the amount of chances that we’ve created, and the possession we’ve had that we’ve played really well in all the games, but we’ve just not got the results.

ANGE’S ANGUISH…boss Postecoglou can’t bear to watch as Celtic topple out of the Champions League.

“Sometimes I’ve played in games in the past where we’ve only had one or two chances and we’ve not had much of the ball, but the way the gaffer wants us to play, I think it’s exciting and all the lads want to play that way.

“So I think if everyone just keeps buying into what he does, nights like tonight can change with the result going the other way.”

Forrest is already looking forward to the visit of Hibs to Parkhead on Saturday afternoon as the focus switches once again to the Premiership.

The experienced forward, speaking to Celtic TV, added: “The gaffer makes it clear that the next game is always the most important one.

“You get nights like tonight because everyone puts all the hard work in for the league games, and that’s what gets you here, so Saturday is no different.

“It’s best that we bounce back well and we’re looking forward to the next game.”
