Welcome to the new look Celtic Quick News.

There are a few changes. We are on a new version of WordPress and are using a more modern template (which we’ve been using for CQN Magazine for some time) but your existing user name and login details will still work. The old WordPress was years out of date and we were beginning to run into issues as a consequence. To get to the comments section scroll to the bottom of the page and login as usual. The Magazine site is no longer a separate entity, news items, which previously appeared there, will now appear below the most recent two blog articles on the Celtic Quick News home page – most recent article top left, second mode recent, top right.

We’ll be making modifications over the next few days. I’ve moved server environments (from three dedicated physical servers to a modifiable virtual environment). Not convinced we have the balance right here so there’s likely to be some tweeking ahead. Also, please ignore any CQNMagazine livery for now, it’ll be replaced in due course.

Today’s article appears below but was originally published on the old template. I’ve not had a chance to copy comments from this article yet but comments from previous articles are on the new version.

Hope you like it (don’t hate it too much!).

Thanks, Paul.

Last night’s article:

Last night played out pretty much as I hoped and expected. A win to zero was what I asked for, while Qarabag demonstrated the kind of resistance which served them so well last season, before tiring late on.

Craig Gordon didn’t have a save to make. What worries there were at the back came from the sudden realisation that Qarabag were up-field and within the kind of range that a hit-and-hope effort could fly in. Concerns in Celtic’s final third are a bit more pronounced. Up against a well organised defence, we created very little and again relied upon a set-piece to break the deadlock.

Did you notice the passing issues we had in the first half? Individual players can have days when passing just isn’t right but when things go wrong on an industrial scale, there’s usually a reason for it.

For me it looked like we were not compact enough. It’s normal to spread across the field when dealing with a packed defence, but we were invariably over-ambitious with our passing. Try to think of partnerships which looked good last night? Apart from the central defensive paring I can’t think of any. Lots of good performances, but the first half was marked by poor passing and players not in-tune with each other.

The change to 4-4-2, which is naturally more compact, helped, even as it came at the cost of our best player until then, Nir Bitton. There are lots of reasons why most of the time we are going to stay with 4-2-3-1, but we need to learn how to be more compact in this formation.

I was reluctant to see Kris Commons make an appearance, as tense Celtic Park crowds are not the most understanding of players who are short of fitness. Fortunately, Kris didn’t need to cover a lot of ground, but his first touch of the season was good enough to create the best opening of the game. Thereafter he brought a tangible change in the goal threat.

We’ve talked about this before, but it’s worth restating. To win tight games you often need to create seven or eight good chances. Without Kris Commons we rarely do this.

We will be clear favourites now to progress, and although Qarabag are a decent team, we saw nothing too concerning, but the tie is far from finished. Get the tactics wrong out there, fail to create partnerships from middle to forward, and we’ll be turfed out.

I hope you all don’t mind me rattling up a comment here,

I’ve been a Celtic fan for a few years now… But actually went to my first match last night. CFC against Qarabag.

It was Bass Bhoy’s birthday, so I thought I’d keep the big guy happy and get us sorted for tickets…… I wasn’t sure what to expect, as I’ve never been to a football match in my life, but thought it would be a nice thing to do for the Bhoy’s birthday.

I’m hooked!! It was an amazing experience……… I was so proud to be wearing my (brand new!) green & white scarf, and to be part of such a great crowd.

I know, you all know your stuff, and could probably analyse every second of that match with unerring accuracy….

But for me, it was a brilliant night, shouting on the team and living it all in the moment.

And the fans were amazing….. just lovely, boisterous, passionate supporters.

I suspect it will be the first of many matches I’m roaring for Celtic.

A worse example of booting the ball away was seen from an Almaty player in the game against the sheep tonight. He was not even spoken to by the ref. Not excusing James- just hate the inconsistency with the pettier rules.

If I can propose another rule change, I would say a substituted player has 10 seconds to get off the pitch unless seriously injured. If he has a minor injury, he should leave by the nearest sideline or byline and await trolley transport. Failing that, use drones to sky-lift the player off.

Thanks mate…do you think it will be a saner place than the old dear green place?

    Hail Hail!

  5. Now Lennybhoy

Broonie did Not have a poor game, he was full of energy and drive as usual, he was poor in trying to play the creative role ?

I think the result was Excellent based on the inconsistent performance of several players ( all created by the way Qarabag forced us to play)

I asked for this last season

Play Henderson and Biton, as holding midfielders ? ? Both can see a pass

Brown on right, Johansen/GMS on left, Armstrong/Commons in middle of the 3, if we are playing this 4,2,3,1

Hoping we can create more next week as they must open up

Ps, I do hope Mulgrew is also fit for next week, they have a weakness with decent high balls into the box, from what I saw

Celtic talk, I love this new idea :-)))

    Hail Hail

  6. Geordie..,

As I said, being an expert I know shit football and last night was a million miles from shit football, granted I did not suffer the stress of watching it live and making any immediate decisions or concentrating on the mistakes but from what I watched today there was plenty of football and

some lovely play. I was surprised after watching the first half how good we actually were after reading about the sky falling in on Celtic park, there was some quality on show, hence my recommendation for anyone who was there to watch it again without the live stress and appreciate what was actually on show, ciftci put in some shift and was IMO unlucky a few times for the sake of the bounce of the ball.

But we did miss Stokesy :)

If you have an iPhone you’ll need to flick through to the ‘@123’ or ‘#+=’ page and select the ‘less than’ and ‘greater than’ symbols on your phone and type them in, which are highlighted on the image below:

These tags can have a combined effect; for example:

This will be bold and italics

This will be regular text, this will be bold, this will be bold and italics, this will be bold only, this regular again.

There are others that can be used normally but seem to be switched off on this site, at the moment.

I agree that there should be consistency on the rule.

As for the Substitutes, totally agree they should leave the Pitch at the nearest exit point. Why the need to go off at the Halfway point I will never understand. Guess it must be in the rules.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  13. Lennybhoy how are ya, young yin, hope all is well with you and your,s agree with all you say re last night performance, said so myself, however we can do the business next week” if everyone steps up to the mark.

Wasn’t slating Broonie as such, yes he was full of drive but his passing was poor to say the least.

Can’t disagree with anything else you post.

I can definitely see us scoring next week as they will need to come out.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  19. The issue for me last night was the persistent side to side passing across the pitch, left to right, right to left. Did we have an attempt on goal in the first half? FFS take a chance and shoot, might not score, but we’ll make it interesting. Brown, Johanson and Armstrong need challenged, they’re all certain starters and shouldn’t get away with that level of performance. Start the Grif next week, our new No7 won’t be ready until 2016.

Really enjoyed Celtic Park and the outstanding backing of most fans.

  20. The back 7 did their job and got the goal. The front 4 were ineffective in an attacking sense and even defensively allowed Qarabag too easily to take the game to Celtic.

Most concerning for me is Armstrong who contributed next to zero offensively and allowed their right back too many one on ones with Izzy. Armstong does not seem suited for the wide left role and contributes a lot less than Stokes did out wide. There is no point in playing Armstrong in a role he is not suited for. It was noticeable GMS going to left tied it up better defensively and help provided the out ball to Emelio & co.

We need to ensure in Baku our front players contribute a hell of a lot more than last night. We will not qualify relying on the back 7.

  21. Cowiebhoy,

I agree with your assessment of last night’s game and the performance of our players. I’m glad too that Canalmalar saw the game largely as I saw it. There WAS some lovely football played in game, even in the first half, even by our roundly condemned captain, who must always be the first name on the team sheet so long as he graces Celtic Park, no matter his limitations. Our team needs to learn to move and make themselves available for a pass. Too few still do so.

I am always worried about how we play against any opposition but we have one distinct advantage against last night’s opponents: height. We need Mulgrew and/ or Commons in the return leg to deliver dead balls into the box, where we should be able to make use of our considerable advantage.
