What a missed opportunity

347

The morning after Ferencvaros reached the Champions League group stage at Molde’s expense, after counter-attacking their way to a win at Celtic Park does not feel any more satisfying than it would be if they were eliminated.  The Hungarians will find the ‘real’ competition devastatingly difficult, but they will console themselves with more money than they could dream of a year ago.  Money that could have been ours.

The solution to our pandemic crisis lay in our own hands.  What a missed opportunity.  October will bring difficult and consequential challenges, Celtic need to use the pain of this failure to ensure that on Hallowe’en we’re not looking back on what might have been.

Fergus built a stadium when we were winning nowt – that’s speculation to accumulate.

    —–

i wonder if fergus was in PL’s job just now would he do the speculate to accumulate thing when it came to transfers and CL qualification?

    no idea

and probably not a fair comparison because PL is CEO of a PLC so has legal responsibilities when it comes to the company’s cash and cant just throw it about willy-nilly

unless it is getting thrown into his bonus pot obviously!

  2. Just watched last year’s Sarajevo ties for re-assurance.

In the home leg, we won 2:1 and had 17 shots, 9 on target.

However the tie was on in the frst leg away where we looked nervy at the start and conceded first but a smart Mikey Johnston long range shot was followed by an Odsonne Solo effort and a clever back heel from Sincy, as well as missing a couple of other good chances.

Unless they have improved a lot, we should get through and I am rarely optimistic on away ties.

  3. Newcastle have Fraser,Jolinton and Wilson up front v Newport County 1 down with 7 minutes to go,that must be about £300k a week trying to score ffs

  4. Fergus built a stadium all them years ago,yet when you look at all the Exits inside they are due a good lick off paint, the only conclusion I come to they Celtic have employed lazy Painters,or more likely it’s interfering with Lawell and co Bonuses.

In my 50 years watching celtic the policy has never been “speculate to accumulate”. That’s why we are in such a sad state for European football.

    ——————–

what sad state ? we topped a europa group with a team from Italy, France and someone who beat us previously, we were in last 32 of europa for the last 3 seasons while winning treble trebles,

    shambles so it is.

ps, we didnt lose a net 30 million euros from not qualifying for CL group, it has to be set against what we did get for Europa participation.

pps, Neil has won more european games than any manager since Mr Stein.

    double shambles.

    Wasn’t Fergus CEO of Celtic?

na, celtic werent a PLC at the time. they were a limited company which is why the kellys etc got away with what they did.

Since you’re on, do you have any background on your recent ‘brammer’ pic, re location or occasion?

Or on the previous one with the deserted terracing and fans sheltering behind the wall?

    Any info much appreciated.

    Thank you.

Fergus became effictively the Managing owner of Celtic PLC when he reconstituted the entity from a Private LTD Company to a PLC with the share issue to go public. He owned 51% , and was the defacto CEO at that time, responsible for signing off everything.

His 5 year plan delivered he met every business objective. Walking away with £40m when selling up to DD and others.

My own opinion, if in charge now, the Fergus of that era would be the most parsiminous CEO, he would not interfere in who is bought, but he would not sanction wasting of funds.

Different people different times, Money men both of them. Celtic in their hearts definately, if gathering personal wealth is the pay grade , well that is PLC business.

Old celtic end, pre half-roof or floodlights, A drookit soaking game, I would say these people are “the faithful” hunched against the wall.

The brammer, others posted last night who the players were. I dont know where it was, going back to have a look.

    Both very evocative images.

yes, he did initiate the stock market floatation so you’re right that he effectively became the CEO

But the initial cash was his. he wasnt throwing celtics money about

    cos we didnt have any!!

and i also agree that he would be a much more hands-offish CEO than PL is

Under the impression we were talking about Europe?

  15. Fergus should have a statue or a stand at Celtic Park! I wish he was CEO when rangers cheated – I don’t think they would have their titles right now and NO WAY would he be party to the 5 way agreement.

He saved us, laid then foundations and we have flourished ever since!

  16. Turkeyneck and others happy to watch is getting pumped and embarrassed by clubs from leagues, where we have a bigger turnover than the WHOLE LEAGUE, think small get smaller, but don’t ever criticise Lawwell and his dictatorship of trying to run the club. Boyata ,£10 million plus bid from Fulham, leaves 10 months later for nothing, a sacking offence on its own, was offered a new deal 18 months before, didn’t sign, get a replacement in and sell him.

  17. HI GHUYS, 3 quiz questions, 2 celtic related, the other general knowledge

1 what was the name of celtics first ever captain

2 celtics first ever siverware was one in 1889 who did they play and what was the score

3 culzean castle in ayrshire was associated with which former american president.

  18. onenightinlisbon on

Celtic have been mismanaged financially for years but our relative success domestically due to the demise of the hun masked it to a large extent. When you look at the vast sums we have had at our disposal and the actual amounts spent on players it’s obvious. Lawwell may have been a supporter at one time but first and foremost he is a suit who only cares about turning a profit for his wealthy benefactor. Without even looking at our pathetic performances in the Champions League we should be so far ahead of the hun that they should be an irrelevance. The board want a strong sevco and whilst not actively promoting the “old firm” brand they want them to thrive and be a challenge. We talk about guys like Nicholas, walker, Commons etc being uncle Tims, Lawwell and Desmond are no better.

  19. Watching 19 year old Alphonso Davies at left wing back for Bayern Munich here, and comparing him to 23 year old Greg Taylor. The difference in standard is incredible. Some on here like to settle for mediocrity for Celtic. Get us a decent left wing back please.

Celtic have been mismanaged financially for years

    —-

    thats just wrong

    and thats the problem

from a financial point of view we have been managed almost perfectly for a PLC – big profits, CEO makes a pile of cash etc

unfortunately its the playing and recruitment side that havent been managed as well as the financial side

  23. 1 what was the name of celtics first ever captain
