What did Juve learn from Celtic on Tuesday?

1080

On watching Celtic on Tuesday I wondered, ‘What will Juventus learn from this performance?’  Their scout will have left with a few notes.

Celtic can break quickly and effectively.  Both Hooper goals came as a result of moving the ball the length of the field, mostly on the deck, at pace.

Their threat from corner kicks was re-emphasised.  Charlie Mulgrew delivers the ball with sufficient pace to benefit from unpredictable movement, beyond the anticipated swerve.  This will be difficult for defenders, keeper and attackers to meet, but Celtic players clearly put a lot of work into practicing getting onto the end of these crosses.

Hopefully the scout will have learned nothing about how we will defend against Juventus as we were somewhat erratic early on against United and were not pressed thereafter.

Juventus are rightly favourites but this this is a thankless tie for them, especially when the first message delivered is ‘Don’t concede corners or free kicks in wide positions’.

They will also be alert to the dangers of being caught forward when Celtic can break effectively.  Celtic conceded through this mistake against Spartak last month but I wouldn’t expect us to leave as much empty space in defence at any point against Juventus.

My main worry about Celtic is over how much practice they are putting into penalty kicks….

  4. I’ve known all the major players in N.I. for a long time. The Pensive Quill site is different in that it questions the status quo.You don’t have to agree with it.You seem touchy on the subject.A cat can look at a queen,or perhaps a king in this case.As regards the political end,I was the E.O. of the Cathal Brugha Cumann way early on.One enthusiast for the political lectures was Alex Maskey, still a good friend to this day. That Cumaann also ran the first West Belfast festival, the Anti Internment Festival.Being a Republican also means you can think for yourself. I blame Catholic schools.

  5. “What did Juve learn from celtic on Tuesday?” Well in my opinion they learned that celtic are the type of club who, if ever have an accidental gem of a player, you can come in and buy him for peanuts, give them a slap and leave. They also learned that in 2001 you couldn’t get a seat for love nor money whereas today you can get a full section to yourself (at least from where I sit)

  6. Talking about Craig Whtye, we interviewed Robert Jenkins today for the next edition of CQN Magazine. Robert’s roofing supplies company took Whyte’s Tixway UK Ltd to court. You will recall Whyte had to give evidence and was deemed unreliable by the sheriff. Robert is still trying to get paid and is owed £135,000 by Whyte.

We have the inside story – and it gives a remarkable insight into what was going on at the time Whyte owned Rangers football club. We have various documents which we will link through to in the next magazine -out next week.

Despite studying Italian for four years, my grasp of La Bella Lingua has been somewhat dulled by the passing of a half century.

The translation was a product of the Bing translator. It is much quicker and more accurate than I could be.

I hope the game ends in a draw and the Arabs get their share of a world record breaking fourth tier Scottish cup tie crowd.

You’ll forgive me for having to do a wee google to figure out the acronym. Not my scene as it turns out. I don’t like regimentation you see.

I do tire of the perpetuation of Good Guys and Bad Guys. It becomes such that the reality of the profanity that the population faced from all directions at the time was really just some absurd Hollywood script, and now it’s Oscar time.

It is dishonest and it is disingenuous. It is also obscures the truth of the times from those who had no experience of it, which serves no good purpose.

Juventus would have learned if you dont attack, sit back against a team that plays on the counter attack at home to Dundee Utd and has little creativity other than set pieces they should be ok to get past.

If they shut down our main play maker Chico Muldini and prevent corners and free kicks they will do ok.

We will be at our strongest in the away game.

  19. BIGbones, I have read a few of Raymacs posts and I’m pretty confident he is a genuine Republican O.K. I agree the N.I. bit is unusual but sometimes you get suckered into using the wrong term when you are trying to write posts in some haste. I well know that serious differences of opinions have arisen between different strands of Republicanism, its something that pains me a lot . I always feel we have more in common then what divides us and we will be stronger by working together.

All the player did was try to get the ball from the ball ‘boy’, whose sole intention was to waste time, as he’d previously boasted he would do.

A wee extra to this story. . . . . Three of my sons pals are over in Keyna with the Celtic Charity Group, Victors mum and dad were at one of the events and had brought a mountain of food for everyone to enjoy. The young fellas then showed Victors folks a video shot when he’d recently arrived at Celtic and was playing in one of his earliest matches and the GB, maybe around 200 of them were singing the VW song to the tune of the Marseillaise, all good stuff. Then they played them the video of their son scoring against Barca at CP and the aftermath of his goal when the whole stadium erupted in unison singing the very same song……… The tears of pride and joy were streaming down his fathers face as he said ” my bhoy, my bhoy” I liked this story HH

It’s no just what you write and realise you shouldn’t have written that.

Early 2000s, did a mate a favour and did a run to Derry for him, the battery on my phone died so had no way of getting directions, anyways went to the Derry side and asked in a shop for directions, directed to a couple of cars outside the shop, I was driving a Dublin reg van, yer man asked what a scottish man was doing in Derry with a D reg van, and I said that as I didn’t know Londonderry I needed directions, the ground could have swallowed me up, they saw the funny side of it, and phoned the people and made all the arrangements for me, I still keep in contact with one of them, and he never let’s me forget it.
