What did Juve learn from Celtic on Tuesday?

1080

On watching Celtic on Tuesday I wondered, ‘What will Juventus learn from this performance?’  Their scout will have left with a few notes.

Celtic can break quickly and effectively.  Both Hooper goals came as a result of moving the ball the length of the field, mostly on the deck, at pace.

Their threat from corner kicks was re-emphasised.  Charlie Mulgrew delivers the ball with sufficient pace to benefit from unpredictable movement, beyond the anticipated swerve.  This will be difficult for defenders, keeper and attackers to meet, but Celtic players clearly put a lot of work into practicing getting onto the end of these crosses.

Hopefully the scout will have learned nothing about how we will defend against Juventus as we were somewhat erratic early on against United and were not pressed thereafter.

Juventus are rightly favourites but this this is a thankless tie for them, especially when the first message delivered is ‘Don’t concede corners or free kicks in wide positions’.

They will also be alert to the dangers of being caught forward when Celtic can break effectively.  Celtic conceded through this mistake against Spartak last month but I wouldn’t expect us to leave as much empty space in defence at any point against Juventus.

My main worry about Celtic is over how much practice they are putting into penalty kicks….

I’ve reproduced below what Alex Thomson has reported the SFA told him in response to the TSFM resolution to put sporting integrity first along with other trust restoring measures. It is astonishing because it suggests that the SFA are powerless to do ANYTHING in terms of instructing the SPl/SFL. Chocolate fireguard comes to mind.

    ——————————————

The SFA’s position on Rangers and the SPL proposals to shoe-horn the club into a 2-Tier SPL remains that they did not, could not, would not seek to influence this matter.

The SFA insist they are football’s umbrella body in the game but have no jurisdiction over the running of the SPL or any league for that matter:

“The Scottish FA has no jurisdiction over the competition rules of league bodies. Through the Professional Game Board, we can provide a forum for debate on matters such as league reconstruction.”

So they say they exist to provide debate on matters like league reconstruction but cannot interfere directly, they say they have no powers to do so’

    ——————————————————-

You would imaginefrom above that some Scottish journalist would pounce on this and ask then what exactly is the purpose of the SFA? Who will protect football from the greed of leagues, who will preserve it for the supporters? What is the point of a SFA mission statement when the ability to carry out that mission does not exist?

I get the idea of a point about Celtic and think this is the best place to talk about it, no one is interested in Celtic talk here now, sad but true. I Love you two though :)

I can see why its turned into an old firm fan forum through the dougie dougie and other exclusives but Celtic posts are hard to fit in. I look in to read the funny stuff and Celtic stuff, every day its about some daft wee division three club and the wee eejit that owns them. Not for me, if I wanted to laugh at wee daft con men Id watch 70s bbc comedy shows.

I harbour a dream that , one day, The Celtic Support, en masse, will sing some newly penned Celtic Song to the Tune of the Triumphal March. Followed by something similar to “va pensiero sull’ali dorate” from Nabucco. Would make YNWA seem very tame.

Ernie Lynch’s using Auden’s piece to describe ol Sevco is a total misuse as Auden created it about a character who was in love with someone who had died, or maybe it is that Ernie/TBB and others do love RFC/Sevco.

Celtic fans from my own perspective have absolutely nothing to complain about, after the disappointment of Henke leaving us and the 10 years it’s taken us to get over his expected departure we’re finally producing a side that is earning respect across the globe. You only have to look at fifa.com or uefa.com to see the range of countries that posts about Celtic generate and a large % of the posters don’t have any noticeable Irishness about them.

Its a fantastic time to be a fan, maybe that’s why I’m not posting as often on here ;-)

  15. McCoist, as I am sure others have pointed out with access to google and half a brain, is worng on Stranraer. Quel surprise…

Further league reconstruction would be introduced for the 1994-1995 season resulting in four leagues of ten teams. This meant that there would be a new Scottish Third Division, so this season five teams were relegated from the first division and only one promoted (Stranraer) to the first division. The bottom ten teams of the old second division were ‘relegated’ to the new third division.

Stranraer leep frogged no one. This was a pre arranged condition of that season i.e. that the winners would be promoted and that five from the same division were relegated.

    AIK Stockholm have reacted

angrily to Mo Bangura’s loan deal

    to rivals Elfsborg.

Bangura spent the second half of

last season on loan to AIK who sold

him to Celtic for £2m in 2011.

AIK felt that they were in pole

position to get Bangura for a third

time but failed to match the loan

    fee offered by Elfsborg.

A statement on the AIK website

read: “AIK have been in talks with

    Celtic since Mohamed returned to

Scotland but it emerged that Celtic

wanted a higher fee than we paid in

    the autumn.

“Another Swedish club has agreed to

meet that price and we won’t

change our view on loan players.”

AIK sports director Jens T Anderson

    added: “This would require more

    money than we have spent

    previously on any loan player.”

The opening game of the Swedish

season is between AIK and Elfsborg

on April 1 with Bangura’s loan being

    for the entire season.

FIFA rules don’t allow players to be

with more than two clubs in the

same season but since it’s a new

    Swedish season starting in April

Bangura is able to join Elfsborg.
