What did Juve learn from Celtic on Tuesday?

1080

On watching Celtic on Tuesday I wondered, ‘What will Juventus learn from this performance?’  Their scout will have left with a few notes.

Celtic can break quickly and effectively.  Both Hooper goals came as a result of moving the ball the length of the field, mostly on the deck, at pace.

Their threat from corner kicks was re-emphasised.  Charlie Mulgrew delivers the ball with sufficient pace to benefit from unpredictable movement, beyond the anticipated swerve.  This will be difficult for defenders, keeper and attackers to meet, but Celtic players clearly put a lot of work into practicing getting onto the end of these crosses.

Hopefully the scout will have learned nothing about how we will defend against Juventus as we were somewhat erratic early on against United and were not pressed thereafter.

Juventus are rightly favourites but this this is a thankless tie for them, especially when the first message delivered is ‘Don’t concede corners or free kicks in wide positions’.

They will also be alert to the dangers of being caught forward when Celtic can break effectively.  Celtic conceded through this mistake against Spartak last month but I wouldn’t expect us to leave as much empty space in defence at any point against Juventus.

My main worry about Celtic is over how much practice they are putting into penalty kicks….

What a potential concoction! Aberdeen casuals, Dundee Utd fans and Sevco! I would love to see the Utd fans also wearing David Murray masks!

In a similar way, UEFA seems to accept that different licensors (national football associations) will sometimes have their own way of doing things, but there is a series of UEFA-dictated steps that they all must take.

In the case of one club, whose name escapes me, the SFA failed to do so over a number of years.

  3. Winning captains recently told us where we all post from. He said – I think – that there are over 100 posters based in Russia. Do any of you know where one can watch the Juventus game in St Petersburg? Please help!

I would agree with your assessment.

I still haven’t heard if HMRC were granted leave to appeal, but in the interveining time, I am surprised we haven’t seen them going after the famous five, or any others that you mention.

I don’t think member associations require to be licensed, only teams.

Auldheids discussion, I think, is about the hierarchy and governance of the game in Scotland.

If they are denying responsibility of governance then IMO they have no right to set themselves up as an appellate body but I’ve got an idea why they want to accept responsibility in this case, CAS would be the the next authority up and that would open a can of whoopass on the SFA if it happened.

That’s not what I thought the discussion was about, sorry. Wrong end of the stick. I thought Auldheid was asking why clubs are required to tell the licensor (the SFA in our case) how much money they are giving to their players.

Do you know I’ve written so much on the SFA and the rules I’d forgotten a letter from the CST to the SFA seeking clarification on licensing but that also touched on who rules whom. Both letters are linked to here..

    Both are at

    http://www.celtictrust.net/?func=d_home_article&id=375

and Mr Regan himself is saying SPL are subservient to SFA articles one of which interestingly says

Article 5.1 Obligations and Duties of Members which, under Article 4.3 applies to the SPL as well as its member clubs, states that

5.1 All members shall observe the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship in accordance with the rules of fair play”

Which tends to suggest are not being consistent and have no reason not to have sporting integrityas paramount in their mission statement.

Hmmmm. Not sure how to play this. Cheers canalamar.

    c_f,

I’ve got my own issues too :o)

At the moment, I am puzzled as to why LNS has been allowed to redefine what a “club” is, I cannot understand how it has become part of his remit, his investigation is about financial irregularities. I can only surmise that its to allow the authorities to sanction Tinkerbell FC for the sins of rangers however from what I understand of the 5 way agreement Tinkerbell FC have accepted responsibility as a trade off for non compliant qualification to hold a license.

So there was no need for any refinement.

The SFA handbook is very clear on the definition of what a “club” is and form what I can see they can reject LNS definition as they are the only qualified body to define this.

I’m getting a wee bit concerned that the SFA could reject any decision LNS makes on the grounds that he does not have the authority to make that definition thus the whole decision is flawed and could be quashed.

Thank you! Well I will try to persuade a local barman to show the game. No local teams are involved in the tournament so there could be hope yet. I cannot find a Celtic club in St Petersburg. It is very odd!

We were at the Spartak game with a lovely Russian girl from St Petersburg. She wrote the message to the Spartak fans which CQN sent to them after the game and they put on their website. It is featured in the current magazine under Spartak Quick News. Anyway, I can ask her to help find you a place to watch the game. She was supporting Celtic as she didn’t like the Moscow clubs!

When the SFA, HMRC and BDO start behaving like the Celtic Board we should be worried. One monkey too many. The GB should start to batten down the hatches

    Auldheid,

There is so much conflicting information coming from the SFA (deliberate IMO) they are obfuscating all the issues.

The articles you quote are definitive IMO and that is the crux of my argument.

The SFA are quite clearly (to me anyway) trying to change the rules into guidelines.
