What happened to Martin O’Neill?

949

Football is a results business and Sunderland’s results have been rotten for months, so we shouldn’t be surprised that Martin O’Neill was dismissed as manager on Saturday.  But he is Martin O’Neill, who appeared to be able to walk on water when at Celtic.  What happened?

Martin’s teams played the same football at Sunderland as they did at Celtic and Leicester.  Direct and, if supported by excellent players, incredibly effective, but Martin was the antithesis of the tinkerer manager.  He had his plan and stuck to it, a fact which Alex McLeish successfully exploited.

Of all the recent dismissals in England his was least surprising.  Sunderland thought they were heading for relegation but still have a fighting chance, the right change could produce the short-term boost required.  As for our old pal Paulo, I’m in David Milliband’s camp. He and ‘Arry can go the same way.

Referring to Jewish people as ‘the Jew’ sounds anti Semitic to an English speaking person.

‘Hasn’t Miliband just recently taken up a new post as head of a charity in New York???’

Which is appropriate because he kind of looks like a puppet.

In reality, demographics dictate that our football and league should be on a par with the Nordic countries and that does seem to be where we are heading.

Still a mystery that with more Scots playing in “the best league in the world”, your Scans seem to be capable of putting a better international side on the pitch.

As well as Murray, the Bosman ruling killed football in Scotland. If you can’t get proper compensation for nurturing talent…why bother doing it at all?

Thank you. Strange, I would not think it sounds anti Semitic. I will remember about that.

I’m merely wondering if the resignation from his footballing position has more to do with his change in career than any sense of integrity or decency.

  7. I’m not sure being a facist in Italy is seen in the same light as here. When I spent some months over there I got to know a friendly football loving group of students. They were very hospitable and seemed decent guys . One day the conversation got onto the subject of politics and they said quite openly that they were facists. I was shocked but it seemed to them its was just like being in UKIP here.

Later I met many italian communists . Politics is another planet over there. Now a comedian holds the balance of power. I’m not meaning Belesconi!

I will try to write short email to you tomorrow, Sir.

I better stop my unfortunate show tonight.

    Hamiltontim,

Could be wrong – but I think he actually cited di Canio’s appointment as primary reason for chucking it.

Don’t blame him t.b.h. for a variety of reasons.

Try it in German, then translate to English, you will get the picture.

Martin got on the wrong side of the Scottish fraternity within Celtic. You know the conceited brigade. He made a fool of Brian Quinn and he told the fans the truth. Martin is now being chastised for failure. Pulling the wool over Celtic fans eyes is now a prerequisite for our inner fraternity.

They will have you believe that MON lost us money or was too expensive when the truth is no EPL invite materialised and the money wasted on the dream team needed to be covered by us yet again ..unfortunately Martins like most intelligent men saw through them.

Never ever let concern about your mastery of the nuances of English, stop you from expressing your thoughts on this site.

There are enough intolerant nutters appearing without us losing the best of our site.

Nobody who knows you, would think for a second you were expressing any distasteful thought. Most of us will make allowance based on what you have communicated in the past.

And unless the communication comes from Paul67, no one can tell you what is or what is not appropriate for this site.

I am afraid that the standard of where to draw the line on language here was breached a long time ago, I’m sorry to say.

You are one of the bastions of decency on here. Do not let the judgementalists run you off.

  17. BFDJ- what a muppet, caught the last 10 mins or Snyde on the car radio.

Don’t know what the question was but the sage says Ally will prioritise the defence so he will get in good quality defenders……and also midfielders and strikers too.

Next breath- Ally will prioritise Scottish players so he will sign them…….but he will also sign English players and foreigners too.

2 sentences, 2 contradictions, even Gerry McCulloch gave it to him for being so idiotic.

    Hamiltontim,

Don’t agree with you there – although as I said earlier it is probably a combination of principle and pragmatism w.r.t. distancing himself from Di Canio. Paolo is a rocket just waiting to go off and anybody sensible will give him a wide berth.

If Miliband had wanted to chuck it just because he’s moving to New York, I think he could have said that without any particular repercussions…

  20. Zbyszek.

I knew what you meant when you wrote that post. Don’t worry what anyone on here says about what you wrote, and don’t go off the blog. BT said exactly what I would have said, you haven’t a racist bone in your body, it’s a pity some on here don’t understand, the quirks of the foreign language.
