What happened to Martin O’Neill?

949

Football is a results business and Sunderland’s results have been rotten for months, so we shouldn’t be surprised that Martin O’Neill was dismissed as manager on Saturday.  But he is Martin O’Neill, who appeared to be able to walk on water when at Celtic.  What happened?

Martin’s teams played the same football at Sunderland as they did at Celtic and Leicester.  Direct and, if supported by excellent players, incredibly effective, but Martin was the antithesis of the tinkerer manager.  He had his plan and stuck to it, a fact which Alex McLeish successfully exploited.

Of all the recent dismissals in England his was least surprising.  Sunderland thought they were heading for relegation but still have a fighting chance, the right change could produce the short-term boost required.  As for our old pal Paulo, I’m in David Milliband’s camp. He and ‘Arry can go the same way.

Sorry , but thanks for shoring up my point, whether £400 or £550 , it`s not on. West End prices for provincial shows is not on.

    Re the attendances.

For some reason we are obsessed with how big is the crowd.

I watch football from all over, probably about 3 games at least a day, watching St Pauli just now, good crowd, but Germany, Argentina, Brasil, Turkey and England apart, in the rest of the world, the crowds are brutal.

I saw Spartak Moscow yesterday, there would have been about 20k tops at the game, the majority of grounds are half full

I think PL has something up his sleeve re pricing for next season, just something I was told, so we will see.

  3. Zbyszek all four grandparents, and one of his two parents, are Polish born.

Do you have evidence that “a big part of” Millband’s family live in Israel?

The vast majority of Polish Jews, and their families, were extermniated by the Nazis.

Referring to “The Jew” is not acceptable on here.

  4. Jmccormick

    Quite so

Over priced for the dross on show most of the time

Our problem is that we rely on ticket money more so than teams from other leagues

Other teams will get much more from advertising and TV than we do

I think Celtic will sell high and buy low if at all.

It makes sense at this juncture to bank ALL monies. Well as much as is feasibly possible.

Disenchantment with and in descending order; our custodians, SFA, SPL, UEFA the SFL , Strathclyde police and the economy will see I suspect ST sales decimated.

Fans who have lost the faith with our club and games custodians have had enough. I wonder if Celtic plc are being pro active about this or will only address it once its reflected in uptake.

Will we be given another brow beaten sermon to appeal to our WWF sensibilities once it happens to cough up or will we sell sell sell

Looking at how we are handling matters it does not feel likely to me.

PL has to come out grom behind his information pimps and start telling the truth or is Jack Nicholson still in town ?

not too fussed myself however I feel that the spectacle is enhanced with a fuller stadium. I agree with your comments about other leagues and this marries with mine about a lot of sports.

I too have head the whisper about SB prices but a figure of 10% reduction is the one I am hearing……we need better, more incentivised packages than that.

having spent a week in Poland with Zbyszek I can assure you that he is not being anti Jewish in any way.

in fact he has a great respect for the Jewish people and what they went through in Poland..

    maybe his translation was wanting…

If you ask me – that we Wullie Flood is so white he looks as if he’s been dipped in a bottle of bleach!

They have to be looking at it. At £34 for a Main Stand ticket for Saturdays visit of Hibs. At those kind of prices and with the standard of football we are currently witnessing, crowds will slide on an annual basis.

  14. Hasn’t Miliband just recently taken up a new post as head of a charity in New York???

Previos post was sent from Blackberry. If sent from the computer I probably would check it twice. Even then, I don’t know why you find the refference to the Jew offensive? Must be an cultural difference, or something that I do not understand. Whatever, no offence was meant.

    As for your question.

I read interesting article on Miliiband visit to Warsaw. He spoke about his connections to Poland (Warsaw) where his roots are and Israel where part of his family lives now.

  18. PFayr

I agree we get eff all from our TV deal, but that is no excuse.

Take the likes of Holland, they get very little as well, but they produce far better players than scotland does, there are a few other countries in the same boat, but they consistantly produce players.

I hark back to the souness era, he destroyed the game re bringing kids through by his buying mercanaries policy.

I also believe, and make no appologie for harping on about it, if we don’t allow the footballers to play, they get well frustrated and give up on the game, Sean Maloney was always injured when at Celtic, plays nearly every game in england, protection is afforded him, if you are a hammer thrower in scotland you will do well, Messie, Inesta and the like wouldn’t be half the players they are if they played in scotland.

Tis a sad state of affairs, and they wonder why the game is in the gutter, jeezo, a half wit can see what the problem is, but as it’s half wit huns running our game, it’s no surprise.

  20. Superb to see a talented young 17 year old score for DU on his full debut. Credit to Jackie McNamara for giving him the opportunity.

As i write this, Lomas’s hammer throwers are trying to kick the young lad all over the pitch.

  21. Though I agree that until we ditch refs and our over aggressive game Scottish football will never improve. Maloney is only playing more now because he wants to play, I’m sure WGS commented that Shaun is fit we just need to convince him now. And Maloney said himself recently that he’s got to the stage in his career that he realises playing when not 100% is possible.

  22. First, it’s ‘Its Glorious Past’ not ‘It’s Glorious Past’.

Second, the fascist salute is a lot more sinister than you think. Ever since 1943 Italy has been in something of a civil war. See Red Brigade, see Milan bombings, see suspected radicals dying ‘accidentally’ in police custody. There are elements in Italian society who have never accepted the post 1945 settlement and are itching to reverse it.

Paolo’s salute is a public celebration of support for right wing thuggery – nothing more, nothing less.
