What happened to Martin O’Neill?

949

Football is a results business and Sunderland’s results have been rotten for months, so we shouldn’t be surprised that Martin O’Neill was dismissed as manager on Saturday.  But he is Martin O’Neill, who appeared to be able to walk on water when at Celtic.  What happened?

Martin’s teams played the same football at Sunderland as they did at Celtic and Leicester.  Direct and, if supported by excellent players, incredibly effective, but Martin was the antithesis of the tinkerer manager.  He had his plan and stuck to it, a fact which Alex McLeish successfully exploited.

Of all the recent dismissals in England his was least surprising.  Sunderland thought they were heading for relegation but still have a fighting chance, the right change could produce the short-term boost required.  As for our old pal Paulo, I’m in David Milliband’s camp. He and ‘Arry can go the same way.

  1. Early start in the morning, so I’m going to hit the hay. Good Night All. Enjoyable and varied blog tonight and little or no acrimony.

  2. scotlands shame on

Nearly 2 days behind but paul67 ur match report seemed to say st mirren wronged more than us yet i made 2 major decisions wrong each an one of ours not a one off incident or a pen that may have been missed at we had a man disadvantage for over half an hr. Some strange decisions this yr an add some anomalies in other divisions then debate needed on state of refereeing. In two yrs time a new team Will be in premier an Will be handed the lge unless we act now. If sfa don’t take away the red from yesterday we need to either boycott Scottish cup as a club an forfeit our position or stop our players with Scotland until those corrupting our game are removed.

No wonder some clubs have gone down the pan.

Nice link, it’s pretty depressing but I guess obvious that those who spend those most on wages are the most successful.

Even Bayern who are held up at the poster child of football clubs spends silly money each week, them not winning the CL is really, in my opinion, a failure.

  4. Based mainly on performances against Celtic this season, I would choose the following as an SPL select with no Celtic players.

    Bell (Killie)

Jack (Aberdeen) Munro (Ross) McPake (Hibs) Douglas (United)

Hayes (Aberdeen) Law (Well) Brittain (Ross) Mackay Steven (United)

    Russell (United) McGinn(Aberdeen)

Subs; Czierniak (United) Pascali (Killie) Cairney (Hibs) McGowan (St. Mirren) Newton (St. Mirren) Griffiths (Hibs) Tade (St. Johnstone)

The only ones I would consider buying are Bell, Jack, Russell and, maybe, Mackay Steven or Hayes but I’d buy 2 at most, Russell and AN other

  5. 'crushed nuts?' 'Naw, Layringitis!' on

At the time martin O’Neil was right for Celtic and Celtic was right for Martin O’Neil.

Some posters have attributed his success to Henrik, some to money, some to deidco’s lack of spending on decent players.

O’Neill gave Celtic supporters the belief that our club was capable of great things again. He was also partly responsible for deidco’s demise in that they felt compelled to spend on some very expensive and ultimately ruinous acquisitions.

Being a manager in the EPL is an imponderable. How does Harry Redknapp, Sam Allardyce etc keep getting work? Arsene Wenger has made a career of winning very little in rekation to expectations yet his position is unassailable. The EPL is becoming a byword for mediocrity, vast sums of money are given to middle ranking players for doing not very much. Managers, with two exceptions are not expected to compete for the title.

J.Lennon was a damaged guy (“Help”) and it would be reasonable to judge him on that basis.

I don’t see enough of other teams to agree or disagree. However, I have been really impressed with the St Mirren player who plays on the right and was a genuine handful for Izzy yesterday.

    Sorry his name escapes me.

  8. Ntassola

I’d wait more than 3 games and I’d wait till he plays our lot. And then I’d check on his fitness to continue playing.

He is a lost talent but he was never very consistent for Well before nor very effective against us.

  9. BMCUWP,

I’m against Independence because Salmond was wanting us to join the EU.

Everyone knows that Murdoch, Berlusconi etc are scumbags so when Salmond is being so publically shunned, it gets the spidey senses going.

  15. Some comments earlier on regarding I support the Fc but not the Plc. Well for me it’s always been the the jersey, players managers boards and fans groups will come and go but the its the allure of the jersey that pulls everybody together. Name me one person past or present who will ever be bigger than the jersey they had the honour to serve
