What happened to Martin O’Neill?

949

Football is a results business and Sunderland’s results have been rotten for months, so we shouldn’t be surprised that Martin O’Neill was dismissed as manager on Saturday.  But he is Martin O’Neill, who appeared to be able to walk on water when at Celtic.  What happened?

Martin’s teams played the same football at Sunderland as they did at Celtic and Leicester.  Direct and, if supported by excellent players, incredibly effective, but Martin was the antithesis of the tinkerer manager.  He had his plan and stuck to it, a fact which Alex McLeish successfully exploited.

Of all the recent dismissals in England his was least surprising.  Sunderland thought they were heading for relegation but still have a fighting chance, the right change could produce the short-term boost required.  As for our old pal Paulo, I’m in David Milliband’s camp. He and ‘Arry can go the same way.

  1. Beram Kayal had one of his better games on Sunday for us. He deserves to be in the line up against Hibs before Hooper or Ledley or Stokes.

One header of the line, 3 slip passes creating chances, a part in our goal, and a driving performance to keep his team mates motivated. No Celt worked harder than Beram over that 90 minutes.

  2. Sorry for Martin, I think he could have saved Sunderland, his biggest mistake at the weekend was letting that donkey Bramble on the pitch, he makes Gary Caulldwell look world class. It may well be that his time has come in football but funnily enough my thoughts were that he could be the next R.O.I. manager. As has been said any Celtic fan should be eternally grateful to him

Re Dicanio; as has been said by most on here, self interested, but great player for Celtic, but was only too glad to get away and Ialways shudder at the thought of that horses rectum that replaced him.

Got to admit bhoys and ghirls that I’m a great fan of Hoopers and will be sorry to see him go. It never has been a great performance for me whenever he is paired with Samaras in an S.P.L. match. Hail. Hail. G.B.N.L.

    Richard Nixon…?

There is very significant evidence that in `68, Nixon stymied efforts by Johnson to come to an accommodation with the North Vietnamese and bring about an end to the Vietnam war.

He did this to attempt to ensure his election.

The killing on both sides continued for another 5 or 6 years.

James McFadden is a Tartan Army cult figure. One goal against France- anything else memorable? You remember his contributions for Everton? Birmingham? Naw, me neither. MON had him for a year and gave him 3 chances in a poor team. 16 games and 1 goal in the past 2 years. We’d be better bringing back Shaun.

There is only one game where he might better Big Vic and that is hide and seek.

  8. Hard to imagine Refs being worse than Dallas, and those who “followed” him.

Been watching the Hoops from the mid/late 60s and this mob take the biscuit.

  9. So Paulo Di Canio is now officially a ‘bad man’ because he’s got an EPL job.

Sky must have been saving up the fascist salute pics thinking he might take Swindon all the way up. They got a bonus today, then.

I loved Paulo Di Canio at Celtic in the same way Tommy Burns loved him – for his passion and incredible skill levels. I loved Di Canio in the Hoops because he gave us absolutely everything he had trying to stop the Cheating Hun juggernaut.

The Golden Boots goal at Pittodrie, the deft byline backheel shimmy to fox and beat two Minis, the bittersweet free-kick volley against the Huns which rattled the bar and inch too high to stop 9IAR.

When we finally failed to halt the blue plague, he felt it as much as any of us in the stands; he all but wept publically for Tommy Burns when the axe fell.

He remains one of the most talented players ever to pull on the Hoops and was but that free kick from becoming as big a legend as Henrik.

I don’t recall his ‘politics’ ever coming into it. I don’t ‘recall’ his politics ever being mentioned until years later and those Lazio salutes.

I don’t actually believe Paulo Di Canio has any real ‘politics’ whatsoever; having read his autobiography I saw only a crazy Rome street kid, turned hooligan blessed with talent beyond his ken; his worldview influenced by his peers and the culture which nurtured him.

He is an intriguingly mad bastard who, with some subtle (and not-so) media manipulation, has given a whole day of hand-wringing disapproval to those who thrive on wringing hands and disapproving.

How easily some are influenced by a few pictures of a lunatic footballer in the middle of a passionate moment, playing to a crowd of more baying lunatics.

David Milliband – reptile; ridiculous shystering over the appointment; you’d think he was back in politics with his attention-seeking.

Paulo Di Canio is not the head of the fascist snake, nor is he anything close to representing a political agenda consigned to history and the fantasies of bumble-brained supremacists. If you think he is then you may also believe Charles Green is the messiah, or whatever else Sky tell you to think (or stimulate you to think).

Sky are simply attempting to build up the EPL into a frenzy of controversy as the relegation fight intensifies. Using Di Canio’s past halfwitted lunatic-footballer misdemeanours to fuel the fires with these sinister undertones is more despicable and worthy of your condemnation and hand-wringing than a crazy ex-Celt with a penchant for playing to crowds.

I’ll take Tommy Burns’ view any day and accept him for what he was up here – a marvellous talented Celt who gave his heart and soul for the cause. What he was before, or since, will not soil any memories of his days in a Celtic jersey.

And I think he might do very well indeed at Sunderland.

Does that make me a fascist, too? Book-burners, let me know what’s approvable. I’m confused; is it black or white this week? If we look hard enough, are we allowed to see grey? Or think? Can we think? Has Sky endorsed that?

Even when we played the likes of Raith Rovers or Dunfermline, the referees would be against us. That’s because in Scotland it’s always a two horse race, and by hurting us, they were helping Rangers.’

Old co were in admin when the season started…

    Yes????

  15. Agree 100% Sandman. DiCanio was an amazing footballer and I loved seeing him give everything for the cause. When it came to playing and training he was also the ultimate professional – he gave everything every time he played, and by all accounts trained like an absolute demon too. The guy has got passion in spades, and I think he might just be the guy to save Sunderland (thought they have a horrendously difficult run-in and a very poor squad).

I love Martin O’Neill (a fellow Derry man and fellow St Columbs boy) – he gave me without doubt my happiest days as a Celtic fan and memories that I will take to the grave. Football management is an unforgiving environment however, and I think Martins best days are past – the team he built at Sunderland are just dreadfully dull and poor. His signings were unimaginative and his natural inclination is to be very conservative. Filling your team with big strong guys who give everything just doesn’t cut it these days – DiCanio could go either way for Sunderland, however I think it was a risk worth taking as O’Neills team were performing like relegation certainties.

  21. Durham Miners Demand Banner Back from Stadium of Light.

Dave Hopper the General Secretary of the Durham Miners’ Association is writing to Sunderland Football Club to demand the return of the Wearmouth Miners’ Banner, which is on permanent display in the Stadium of Light, in protest at the decision to appoint the self-confessed fascist, Paolo Di Canio, as their head coach.

Mr Hopper, who worked for 27 years as a miner at Wearmouth Colliery, the site on which the Stadium of Light now stands, described Di Canio’s appointment as an outrage and a betrayal of all those who fought and died fighting fascism.

He said,”I like many thousands of miners have supported Sunderland from infancy and are passionate about football. But, there are principles which are much more important.

“Our banner represents the Durham miners’ long struggle for the rights of the working class, rights which were annihilated by fascism in Germany, Italy, Spain and Chile.

“We have a sacred obligation to the millions who were wiped out by Hitler, Mussolini and Franco to oppose fascism wherever and in whatever context this evil creed raises its head particularly at a time when working people are again being forced to pay for capitalism’s crisis as they were in Europe in the 1920s and 30s.

“The appointment of Di Canio is a disgrace and a betrayal of all who fought and died in the fight against fascism.

“Everyone must speak out an oppose this outrage and call on Ellis Short and the Sunderland Board to reverse their decision.”
