When exceptional becomes the norm

869

As this clean sheet run has continued, every time Fraser Forster has made a good save, I’ve found myself suggesting that the defence is not playing as tightly as it used to.  We quickly regard exceptional performance as the norm.

Fraser has, of course, been exceptional, again, this season.  Efe Ambrose and Virgil van Dijk are fast and commanding.  Virgil has a presence about him, like Wanyama, but bigger.  On the flanks, despite the lack of competition, Emilio Izaguirre is performing at his best, while Adam Matthews, Mikael Lustig and Darnell Fisher have shuffled through the right back position as availability dictates.

I have a notion that Scott Brown is also worth credit for the defensive performance.  He seems to have grown this season, perhaps as a consequence of fitness.  This is his best season yet.

Ultimately the game is all about tactics.  Any team can keep a clean sheet but 10-in-a-row (get used to reading that) is a consequence of team plan, which is where Neil Lennon comes in.

Tomorrow is the final day to confirm tickets for our CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner on 14 March at the Kerrydale Suite.  The dinner will raise funds to build a kitchen at Kholoni Primary School in Mchinji, Malawi, where 1200 kids currently attend without food facilities.  If you have lost your invoice email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

See you there.

  1. Nags. Turn away now.

Was waiting on a debutant today….been pulled, so another time.

    Anyhow.

Dawn Commander runs in a jumpers bumper at Kempton today. First run for Mrs Robeson. A real scary jumper in the past but seems to have taken on a new lease of life at Fences Farm. Been very good on the gallops and the head lad has been very pleased with him.

At 9s and 10’s, he’s a bit of value each way, IF he turns his current home form to the track today. Wouldn’t go mad as Nicholls charge is a good horse, and a couple of others are lively.

If ye have a spare few quid, a wee each way bet might be worth a try in the hope the new Dawn Commander turns up and not the old monkey!

  2. Sky Sports News 08:51;

We are hearing that Celtic are closing in on the signing of Wolves striker Leigh Griffiths with the player travelling to Glasgow for talks and a medical. Celtic boss Neil Lennon has made Griffiths one of his top targets in this month’s window and is hopeful of pushing through a deal.

I’m not a judge or lawyer and don’t know the legalities of what you say, and most likely you are correct in what you posted, however, that stinks to me of house search without a warrant.

So taking it one step further, the police in Scotland are legally able to demand another, any other, give them details of a third party, any third party, if the police in Scotland state that they ‘ think ‘ the third party, whose details they want, ‘might’ be going to commit a crime, maybe not for a thousand years and maybe in another galaxy, but to commit a crime nevertheless?

I wonder what would happen if you had a pair of balls and told Police Scotland to go take a flying duck to themselves and if they wanted said details come back with a judges warrant?

My sarcasms are not intended at you.

  4. Stuart Armstrong would be a good replacement for Ledley but I think it’s more likely that we’ll move for him in the summer.

In the meantime Zheng Zhi – who is finally injury free and has taken part in a couple of bounce games at Lennoxtown – can step in to take Joe’s place.

On 29 July 1848, just a mere 40 years before Celtic were born, William Smith O’brien, A Young Irelander rebel (and a Protestant) was sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered.

    Yeah! really.

    And what was his crime?

    Sick eh?

Some say the SNP are thinking of bringing back the old HDQ sentence for the G.B.

    And your point is?

  8. So it looks like Bye Bye Joe,

Ive been a fan and hope you do well in your future career, but cant help but think youve taken a step backwards going to Palace.

Thanks for your 3 1/2 years service. And THAT goal will long be remembered!

HAIL! HAIL! and welcome to Leigh Griffiths assuming you pass your medical etc.

Im still sceptical to how much extra you will offer us, but good luck regardless and i look forward to you ramming my words down my throat as you slam in the goals in the Champs League Group stages (once you’ve taken us through the qualifiers!).

    HAIL! HAIL!

No, you haven’t offended me on here!!

Your post @ 05.59, was in my opinion…inane drivel.

  11. So, if big Joe is for the off? Then I for one will be sorry to see him go.

As far as I’m concerned he wore the jersey with pride and was an honest player, and always gave 100% at his job! can’t ask any more than that.

So anyway Joe, I wish you well on your new club and thanks for the memories.HH.

  12. SmashingMilkBottles on

I’m not too upset that Joe Joe Average Joe is away. I feel he often disappeared during games.

    Just my opinion like…….

I’m away tae read the Etims rumour mill again.

  13. Sad to see Super Joe go and wish him all the best at Palace.

Always played for the jersey and you could tell he grasped what the club was about from day one.

Will always be remembered for his goal against our former rivals and the goal in the SCF to secure the Double.

    Hail, Hail Joe

  14. Ah! well porridge and salt for 250 lower paid Celtic employees again tonight, but like all of us they live in hope. Maybe next year they can dream of a Big Mac but how they’re going to share it out between all 250 of them will be interesting.

(for the record I don’t know how many Celtic employees ‘ don’t ‘ enjoy a living wage but I do know of a few who do and who won’t be scoffing their porridge tonight)

Celtic… more than a club. Well if Leigh Griffiths is joining us he’ll have to try really hard to do worse than his latter day pathfinders Chris Killen and the bold Derek.

    Good Luck to him.

If you are aware of what inane drivel means you will understand that it is insulting …..

No harm done …I didn’t hold any great store by anything you had to say anyway

  16. Wow!

Big Joe gone, and LG heading up North, well that’ll do for me, Joe cost us nothing, LG gonny cost about £800 thou. Plus ad ons, getting £800 thou for Joe, another good business deal done by big PL, honestly this man should be sainted, the job he does at Celtic Park is second to none, PL, we are not worthy, what giant he is at this fantastic club, oh and welcome LG, so looking forward to seeing you in the hoops, of all the strikers that where being mentioned in the window, you where my first choice, and I am sure you will go on to be a legend at my club, HH.

  18. Amazing transfer window Nothing spent and we sign a goal scorer

If palace had not bid for Ledley we would not sign griffifths

Personally I would have swapped derk pukki and bungera for griffifths. But nobody in their right mind would take those. 3 duds

I think in theory the police are supposed to have credible suspicions of imminent criminal activity and they need to be documented. That’s why it stinks that we have helped fast-track the process.

Not to worry, etims rumour mill has Rhodes, Snodgrass, Berbatov and Wallace signing now or in the summer.

    HH

  22. I hope this Ambrose rumour is unfounded. Hes been a revelation this season and i would hate to see him go. We have the best ball-playing centre-back partnership that Ive ever seen at Celtic. This has been the real strength of the team and where the ball retention starts.

  23. Morning all

    On train to work.

So we seem to be losing Joe . Not a great player but at times a very good one. Overpraised at times undervalued by many . He scored the last goal I ever saw us score against Rangers in the Flesh ( broke my ankle and was unable to make subsequent derbies) . Thanks for that memory and plenty of others Joe. Good luck.

And it would appear to be Cead Mille Failte *to Leigh Griffiths. Misgivings though I and others may have I hope you are a hit .

agree on the partnership statement. George Connelly being the best we’ve had, along with other individuals such as Pat Stanton and even fat Pat. But I can’t recall having two footballers at centre-back before. Hopefully there’s no foundation in this.

  25. Ulsan/Black Isle Celt on

    Sydney Tim,

So by your reckoning Stefan Johansen was free!

Maybe Celtic shouldn’t announce transfers until the final day of the window as they apparntly don’t count.

£700k for someone who doesn’t want to stay and is in the last weeks of his contract is good business (i’m a big Joe L fan) but Nir & Stefan are in place ,same with Sammi sign or go.

I would rather both signed new deals but if they dont want to give others the chance NOW.

If they dont sign new deals(I think Sammi will) and hang about for other options in the summer drop them ,

we need players who will be ready and playing together for the CL qualifiers.

Again I would rather both would sign up again but we need to think ahead.
