When newspapers cut their own throat

712

I had very little interest in what former Rangers player Kirk Broadfoot did or said in a match against Wigan recently, I didn’t even know he was still in the game.  What makes him newsworthy (to some) today is a 10 match ban, handed down by The FA in England, for what was reportedly sectarian abuse.

What I found galling is how Mirror Group Newspapers reported this story.  The Mirror wrote:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for a sectarian tirade against James McClean.

The Rotherham and former Scotland defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

Its Scottish sister paper the Daily Record reproduced the same text with one edit:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for launching a verbal tirade against James McClean.

The former Scotland and Rangers defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

The italics are mine.  For reasons which don’t surprise me, the biggest selling Scottish newspaper decided it was unwise to report that a former Rangers player received a huge ban for sectarian abuse.  In 2015.

When Celtic Quick News started 11 years ago a couple of newspapers and radio stations pretty much controlled the news, politics and sports reporting in Scotland.  The journos all worked together; this was a real cabal.  If they wanted to blacken the name of a Fergus McCann, or his like, droves of people quickly turned away from him.

CQN started because reporting like this was rife and unchecked.  I know the value of the new “citizen” media, but I also know its limits.  We need newspapers, we need people to continue to buy them and we need them to find a viable business model.  Without them, reporting which requires considerable resource, experience and, occasionally, money, will not happen.

Most of all, we need them to stop cutting their own throat.

I’m off to Aberdour today, for the 12th CQN Golf Charity Open, not that I’m a golfer, of course.  See you there.

Yep, I see where you’re coming from now.

  4. I cancelled what left I had of Sky recently – I only had the basic package + Sky Atlantic because Mrs SS likes Game of Thrones. It’s now finished and the next series will be available through other means (Art of War).

They invited my to complete a survey and left an open goal when they allowed my to type “any other comments”.

    So I gave them this:

“Had I still been subscribing to the full SKY package as I used to, I would still be cancelling SKY and especially SKY SPORTS due to the imbalance of money that SKY provide to the EPL compared to the SPFL. But more due to the anti-Celtic bias in the commentary and reporting of all things Celtic. The sycophantic interview by Jim White of Dave King being the most recent example. It was more like a sales drive for season tickets.

Until SKY stop using the term “Old Firm” I will not be subscribing to any SKY channels via SKY.”

    Feel much better now.

Wee point Mike, you can’t be charged under OBaF Act when supporting your team outside of Scotland.

  11. I am delighted to confirm that Aberdour has been bathed in warm sunshine all day. 40-odd golfers resplendent in every shade of green. A wonderful sight. Mostly.

  12. the glorious balance sheet on

I see a number of posts on here today about Police Scotland and their absolute power in determining what is “offensive”.

The Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser ran a story last week reporting on how a woman in her early 50s was driving through Greengairs and got caught behind the orange walk on Saturday 11 July.

She drove past the marching bigots and shouted at them as she did so. The paper did not report precisely what she shouted but from the context I understand that reference might have been made to a certain fruit.

Unbelievably plod charged her with a “sectarian hate crime.” So let me get this clear in my head:- at taxpayers expense, and causing much disruption, orange (dis)order bigots marched through the streets playing tunes that talk of being up to their knees in fenian blood etc. This is all facilitated and enabled by the council and Police Scotland.

Yet it is innocent people obstructed from going about their daily business by these waddling bigots who are done for “sectarian hate crimes.” How can objecting to people singing about being up to their knees in fenian blood make you guilty of a hate crime?

Police Scotland is an out-of-control organisation with serious problems as is evident from media coverage of a number of incidents recently. Giving such an organisation`s officers carte blanche to decide what is offensive – as the Offensive Behaviour Act does – is an act of complete stupidity.

    Stubbsy an FFin’ bad yin:

“If Allan is indeed coming to us in this window, does anyone think Stubbs might play him out of spite tomorrow so that he becomes cup tied?”

  14. monaghan1900

Now that’s a strange one as the legislation was only intended to be addressing regulation football matches within Scotland.

I wonder if the point you highlighted is regarding the ‘offensive communications’ element of the Act?

Certainly as far as I’m aware nobody has been arrested for any offence outside of Scotland.

    Offski again!

    Kirk’s the FFin’ man:

“IMO that rhat mclean should be facing a ban, not Broadfoot.”

    ——

“And isn’t it a real puzzle that big Kirk is in soapy for doing what the authorities should have done some time ago with this bog rhat instead of sh***ing themselves about the feelings of a few terrorist sympathising lowlife?”

    ——

“Why should this wee p[erson] have his rights protected and Broadfoot does not? Well done Kirk and i hope many uk citizens stick up for you.”

    ——

“So let me get this straight? Abusing someone for the religion OF THEIR CHOOSEN and having a dig at an IRA glorifying rhat is worth a bigger punishment than racial abuse?”

[Doesn’t look to be particularly ‘straight’ Sammy.]

    ——

“If this is true…then utter, utter, major respect Mr Broadfoot.”

    ——

“Hey mclean i have some news for you, you are a bead rattiling ,tarrier f%^& pig.”

[This from the site run by STV’s go to man on all things Sevco.]

    ——

“Big Kirk a real bluenose and one of us, copped some sh*t from some of the FF Maradona’s in here.”

    ——

“When you see the England manager having to make a grovelling apology to the IRA and its supporters you know the games a bogey and we have been fecked over!

Is there no good people with a sense of what’s right and what’s wrong in this country anymore do Fenians have control of everything?”

    ——

“Broadfoot should get knighted for trying to protect the good name of our war dead and our sovereignty”

    ——

“Considering the way the FA have been in handling anything to do with the Irish and the National team, for example, one has to wonder seeing big Kirks punishment what’s the philosophy down there…?”

    ——

“This is totally out of line and shows what we are now all up against in this country. really messed up times”

    ——

” I would have expected this from the SFA but in England.

Games well and truly over. We lost.”
