When teams, including Celtic, get it wrong in Europe

438

Let’s be clear, Morton are not a good football team, nor are Hibernian, but the former’s 0-3 win at Easter Road last night demonstrates the uncertainty principle of any game. Turn up with less than 100% hunger and you will find yourself out of the cup.

Celtic cannot afford to field anything less than their top team a week on Sunday in the Scottish Cup quarter final. Morton are a better team now than they were three years ago when they last won at Celtic Park – and we’re everyone’s favourite soft spot.

I watched Manchester City win comfortably away to Dynamo Kiev last night. It finished 1-3 but 1-5 would have been a more accurate reflection on the chances made. The result and performances didn’t reflect the relative merits of each team.  Dynamo are not that bad, City not that good.

City are horrible away from home this season. They have scored 13 goals in 12 away league games, winning only five. More curious is that they also won 1-3 away to Sevilla and 2-4 away to Borussia Monchengladbach. That’s 10 goals in 4 (in total) Champions League away games, not far shy of their 13 goals in 12 Premier League games, most of which were against inferior opponents.

Here’s the thing, Dynamo, Borussia, Sevilla all fancied their chances against City. They pushed high up-field and were shredded as a consequence. Premier League teams don’t make that mistake.

Cup competitions are different from the league, success is all about getting to the next round, and to do that you need to pose a threat, but all three of City’s opponents failed to comprehend the consequences of pressing forward.

All I could think of was our efforts in Molde and Malmo. We took both games to our opponents and were skelped as a result. Away to Ajax we defended deeply and gained a credible draw, at home the open spaces of Celtic Park behind us were exploited by Ajax to our cost.

Dynamo, Borussia, Sevilla and Celtic didn’t know when it would have been wiser to prioritise defending their own 18 yard box.  It’s a big lesson, one which has been evident since Warsaw.

Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on 25th February 2016 3:08 pm – “Eddie…,

I’m lucky, I watched the 67 team and they won more than 75%

I also watched MON’s team and he won 75% over his tenure so there must have been a couple of seasons he won more than 75%.

So I’ll tell you for the millionth time, stop exaggerating :)”

That’s great mate, I too watched the Lions from about 1970 during 9iar and also watched Martin’s team, great times.

The only problem is I never said anything about winning 75% of games and I think you know that very well.

I said “win every game or even 75% of their games in the style you are alluding to” which is very different from what you are saying.

Big Peat of Islay was talking about the way we play and my reply was in relation to that which I’m sure you were aware of as surely you wouldn’t just jump in without having read what the discussion was about? :)

This would be a good thing – the sight of empty tiny grounds like Ross, ICT,Hamilton, St Johnstone make Scottish football akin to the lower reaches of the Vanarama. It is truly embarrassing watching Sportscene – makes me cringe!!!!

*they even have the audacity tae show sevco games live over here just tae ensure they’re still thought of as a big team.

The only consolation is that it’s on a PPV channel.

Nae wonder the Scottish game is the laughing stock of the fitba world.

  3. Bada,

Has anyone asked him why he left Waghorn (pen) on the pitch to take the spot kick if he was so badly injured by the naughty surface?

  4. While playing for the deidco, Ronald de Boer injured his knee kicking an advertising board. If Warbs had been manager at the time I’m sure advertising board would be the subject of his ire.

He is fast becoming a boring rent-a-quote…

The only reason I mentioned Morton was due to the last time they beat us, guys in work who I didn’t think even followed football were giving it big licks as well as getting it tight from the genuine Morton supporters. Will be nice to say nothing and smile at them on the Monday…just another hurdle on our way to the cup…

Malton Airport – you really take me back. First visit to Canada was 1969 – watched the moon landing there and was back in that same room in November 2014 when I went for a business trip and visited my aunt who still lives in that house. I was told that she had only got rid of the original tele a couple of years before.

Airline was World Airways – Prestwick to Malton.

I had only ever been on a plane as a baby as our holidays were always in Scotland but my Gran was a regular traveler to Toronto to visit her other daughter and son who lived there and by 1969 i was 10 and went with her (going back in 70).

Plane was Boeing 747 and we got a free travel bag with the World Airways red and white logo like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Airways

I had that bag for at least 20 years before it crumbled.

On board meal was proper steak with silver service. It was definitely the best steak I had ever had to the point in my life.

Although 69 the trip was in the close season, I heard about the Celtic supporters clubs in Toronto and was so delighted when Mike took me to the Scarborough when I last visited to see the famous Aberdeen Celtic game when we sneaked it 2-1 in the last minute. The day of the short-lived Ronny Roar of course.

  7. ‘However, today Warburton defended his position, adding: “If Ronny did say that then I think that’s disrespectful because you are entitled to your own opinion.’

    =================================

    ‘Disrespectful’?

Cheeky Hun monkey. a passive-aggressive wank playing at being boss of a pretendy wee skint husk of a rancid deid rotting carcass of hate, bigotry and racist, white-supremast, forelock-tugging, witless, royalist, pinny-wearing, goat-pumping malice.

Was that the game”Orange’ Person scored a screamer

*correct and their davie provan broke his leg trying tae break we ten thirty’s.

Wee story about that game, after the final whistle and they were jubilant at being the first side tae beat the Champions of Europe.

One of their favourite and best known players did a jig up the tunnel and somehow ended up at the marble staircase. He was immediately chastised in a “don’t you know your place” tone and told to leave.

This story was related to me by the driver of the coach, originally fae the Peoples Republic of Brucehill, which they used on a tour a couple of years later who heard it fae the horse’s mouth.

  9. How do you think the following team of Celtic players present and past who are still playing would do in the Champions League.

    Forster

    Lustig Van Dijk Danayer Teirney

    Brown Wanyama

  10. Stewart Regan, the Scottish FA Chief Executive, Alan McRae, the President and Rod Petrie, the Vice-President, will travel to Switzerland tomorrow to represent the association at Friday’s election

  11. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on 25th February 2016 1:25 pm

    Big Peat

We are of a similar vintage and by the sounds of it share similar experiences hanging over the wall at the front behind the goals…

*thank donald duck you two wurnae around during the years in the wilderness when we played “football the Glasgow Celtic way” even at the expense of losing a 3 goal lead in the semis of the ECWC and often had our ar8es felt.

When I heard that MON had was coming my first thought was ‘awe nae he’ll turn us intae Leicester O’Celtic”, that didnae last long, especially after watching Tommy Burn’s sides, as I realised it was the only way we would stop the panzer march fae the south side of the toon.

Winning Captains, while those figs on daily sales of printed media are interesting I don’t think they really mean that much as look at how much is now spent producing online editions.

People in Scotland still get their daily fix of the traditional titles like the Daily Record but now they bypass all the boring stuff they used to pay for like celeb gossip, in the case of football fans, and can now access several football sections for free on their smart phone etc.

My wife and daughter browse several daily’s online and subscribe to some mags to get the content they require.

The media has moved on in ways unimaginable a few short years ago but the same media moguls still control what most people consume on a daily basis. On a brighter note it’s good that sites like this and from a Scottish political perspective Wings exist so that we can get an alternative view of what’s really going on. The reality though is that except for a few single issue sites(football, politics), the main place ordinary people venture to online is the traditional MSM sites that are identikit in content and opinion to their printed editions.

I’m sure I read a study on this recently, I’ll try and find it and post a link.

Do not know much about Gianna Infantino personally but I think all on here will remember a while back when he conducted the Champions League draw. Our very own Billy McNeill, amongst others, was involved in the draw, in fact I think he was the first involved, but had a problem opening the balls containing the teams. Now it could have been a disaster on a par with the recent Scottish Cup draw, but thankfully Gianni was on hand with grace, graciousness, respect and good humour to help Billy out without any embarrassment. And in the flawless English those damn Europeans are so good at. I’ve always thought well of him since then, and if his etiquette reflects the man he will prove a good choice. As they say over at FIFA, vote early……and vote often!

Your are correct on the Big Billy thing.

I think the Clumpany’s point about Platini is rather tortuous – of course when new information becomes available, any sensible person/organisation will reassess their position – I’m no fan of SFA/SPFL – but the lengthy piece seems much ado about nothing – a gap-filler methinks!

As well as online access, the influence of the Media is increased via the seeping of the intended message via many sources so that we quickly adopt the received message whilst simultaneously believing that we are reaching our own conclusions.

I doubt a single one of us is immune from this influence but any awareness of the process might help.

    Cheero for now,

    JJ

  17. Coolmore Mafia – I believe, on paper, we have a decent squad – lots of potential, young and hungry – however as I have often said – we are not getting the requisite ‘bang for our £38 million wage-bill buck’

It is either down to the players or the management/coaches – or a combination of both.

Players who wanted to go have been sold, however there has been twenty-three additions by Ronny, with no obvious improvement decernible.

I am puzzled by the make-up of the squad, but it seems obvious that Ronny is staying for the foreseeable future – so I will be there right behind the team – but I am not exuding confidence.

If pushed I would say we will win the title and that’s it – unfortunately that is not progress, however if can do it with a bit of style and an improving team, perhaps we will accept it – and hold our collective breaths for the CL qualifiers

While people hail the demise of the MSM print editions the actual reality is somewhat different. The following is from the National Readership Survey(NRS)-

“Our latest data highlights that across a month on Print, PC, Mobile & Tablet, 95% of GB adults aged 15+ are reached by newsbrand or magazine media content, that is 49 million people.

On average, Mobile & Tablet adds 78% net reach to the individual footprints of the brands measured across magazine media and newsbrands.

Across all brands measured on the NRS survey, digital content (i.e. PC, Mobile & Tablet) adds an additional 17% to the overall monthly print reach figure.”
