When the Champions League shop window is a bit too clear

586

We’re getting to that time of the transfer window when clubs with money and who are either underperforming, or who have silverware in sight, often make desperate decisions.

It is a remarkable statement of the times that three Celtic first team players have attracted interest from English Premier League clubs, at valuations that a year ago would appear eye-watering. It’s just as remarkable that we’ve not locked the suitors in a room until they emptied their wallets.

Seven months into the season, five credible Champions League performances and 27 peerless games in domestic football and our 34-year-old goalkeeper attracts a higher bid than would be achievable by any player at a Scottish club other than Celtic.

Not that I’m agreeing with all this ‘What we have we hold’ business. Every playing asset has a price, to borrow a regular CQN phrase from 2005.

I hear Peter Lawwell was spotted earlier buying tickets for tonight’s showing of T2 Trainspotting for himself, Brendan, Craig, Erik and Moussa. “Unreal” wage offers can turn a player’s head.  Better get them to the movies with their phones switched off.

It may also show the big clubs that Celtic is a worthy club to send youngsters to for development.

I think by ‘big’ clubs you meant rich clubs…

  2. Would not like to see D go but every player has their price and if a crazy bid comes in then it must be tempting as a serious injury can happen at any time as well.

Hopefully it is too late in the day for anything to happen now unless BR has got a ‘replacement’ on his radar.

£40m+ though would allow a bid for Roberts and still leave some for a midfielder as well as a decent striker.

That happened to me once, lass cancelled our Saturday night. Sadly for her,I found out,and phoned her Sunday morning and asked her if she fancied a night out.

In Ardrossan, but I lived there at the time.

So I picked her up,sat in the window of The Ingledene for our first drink while she told me how her two nephews had been a handful the night before when she was babysitting.

    Aye,right…

As I got to the bottom of the pint,I excused myself to go to the toilet.

Sharpy out the side door and across to The Lauriston to watch from the window how long it took her to twig.

    Surprisingly long,considering she wisnae blonde…

  5. IF those ‘Landan’ bolshies are actually prepared to offer us circa 40 million New English Roubles for our French project, PL needs bagging if he doesn’t bite their gilded hand off.

That sort of fee must be a record for any club outside the ‘big’ European leagues selling a player in.

A quick swoop of the Hun boards last night tells all we need to know – they are in terrified denial; they understand what a deal like this means for the future.

When he comes alive, Moussa’s been a special joy to see in a hooped shirt, but not so special that you don’t wonder what 40 mill could do to raise the overall standard of our squad AND put the club on a solid financial track – as of 2019 we are due to pay up circa 19 million of structured debt to the Co-Op, tranches of which will be made this and next year; no need to point out what a massive injection of transfer cash will do to ease those obligations.

Sometimes, you don’t look a gift-Czar in the mouth. This time last year as we meandered towards a dull title and bitter embarrassment at Hampden you’d have been hard pressed to expect 4 million for the entire squad.

I f he stays, we’ve a prize asset, if he goes we’ve just won the wee unrated footy league transfer lotto jackpot. Win-win.

  14. Hi Auldheid,

    Small world eh?

Thanks for the link, some interesting stuff.I wonder if the Windsor team the author writes about is the one based in the Windsor Bar at Bridgeton Cross. What a shower they were.

We played them in a midweek cup tie at Queens Park.

It was shortly after they had beaten Cowglen and the result was in the Rangers News that Windsor Rangers had beaten Cowglen Celtic!! i don’t think that went down well with the bluenoses in the Cowglen team.

They brought a large crowd of knuckle draggers for support with full regalia on show.

It didn’t do them much good as we beat them 2-1 with yours truly getting the winner (ah the memories).

A full scale riot ensued with many a dull yin administered.

I know Pat McLuskey well and knew big John McIntyre (who sadly passed away at a very young age) and Joe Pirret as well.I bumped into Gordon Smith last time back in Glasgow. My wife thought he was absolutely charming and wouldn’t believe he was an utter thug on the park,as well as being a more than decent player

  15. uldheid,

A few more memories for you.

Before The Alhambra became to go to pub,it used to be downstairs in the Alpen Lodge in Hope Street for the Saturday morning players.

We asked the then owner to lay on some grub (pies etc) as we were always hungry after the games. He did so then told us he was moving to the Alhambra,so we followed. Andreas then took over and started doing a wider menu with spag bol, steak pie etc which went down a bomb and was very unusual in Glasgow in those days.

He then started booking bands for a Saturday night which we all were happy about and some of the better pub bands in Glasgow at that time were on show.A wee change from The Howff and The Maggie which were 2 of the better known music venues.

Re; My Last Comment Re; Players Mindset after the Transfer Window..

Last Year I had a Couple of Yankees on Top Goalscorers.. Griff 9/2 Waghorn Pen 11/2 Armstrong 6-1 of Newcastle on Loan to Coventry.. He was 5 Goals clear during the Transfer window .. Speculation he was going back to Newcastle.. Benitez stated he was Not ready.. He was 1/10 on for Top Scorer.. Never scored again rest of Season.. finished 4th Top

jay Simpson 8/1 Leyton Orient who was 9 Goals clear during Window.. same Speculation Re; a Move 1/100 on Never scored again and finished 3rd Top Scorer..

I reckon either way.. Aberdeen will beat Celtic and might beat them well this week..

I understand you can make conditional offers, but my understanding of the window was that everything needed to be done by the deadline, I may be very wrong though, it won’t be the first time

  20. Noticed the lack of the running total on SSN of how m uch money english clubs spent during transfer window.

  21. SUMMA….

Moussa has a long contract with us. about 3 and a half years left.

How can anybody sign him on a ore contract?

  22. MOONBEAMSWD:

That, I’m sre, is the total amount we can borrow on previously agreed terms. I think we owe them circa 5.5 million and we don’t pay that off because it would terminate the deal if we did.

    I think Sandman is mistaken.

*Just said that tae Mrs TT this morning. Also learned this morning that the AAG Sally Yates when being interviewed for the position during the Senate Confirmation hearings was asked by one of them if the President asked her to do something that in her eyes was wrong and unconstitutional would she still do it. Her response was “I believe that the Attorney General or the Deputy Attorney General has an obligation to follow the law and the Constitution, and to give their independent legal advice to the President”. That Senator was Sessions.

Thanks. Your post earlier about the Real Madrid game helped. By coincidence I was leafing through the programme for that match earlier today.

I’ve always been impressed by your ability to recall the days. Did you keep a diary, or do you just have a natural resistance to Alzheimers? Either way I’m interested.

*I really have an excellent memory, not a photographic one else I would have more money, but a really good one. Comes in handy when on Vale of Leven sites as well.

A natural resistance to Alz ? dear God I hope so as dementia took my mother who was a really smart woman.

I also have a good collection of Celtic books including Tom Campbell’s excellent 1945-70 which helps reinforce what I think happened.

The older I get and no longer having my mind polluted with concerns over employees, contractors and contracts allows me tae indulge in the “good times”, that includes music as well as the ‘tic, my first and everlasting love.

In saying that I spent a season following the super sons as I was too wee to go tae Glasgow myself and my da like a lot of fathers then loved the 2 nights late, Saturday morning and Sunday shifts. Good memories though of being wakened in the morning as he was leaving for work and asked to meet him at the Estate Bridge for games including Reserve Cup finals, or the Neilly Mochan nap hand against the Buddies in a SC 2nd replay.

BTW did you know the first player to wear contacts during a game played for Dumbarton.
