Xenophobia trumps racism for Brits at Euros

738

All week I’ve been telling myself that it is a healthy thing that discriminatory chanting has come under the spotlight prior to Euro 2012.  The world needs to focus on those who are unable to find an outlet for their testosterone without picking on the vulnerable.

We know all about discriminatory chanting in Scotland, you could say, we’re up to our knees in it, so I’ve been slightly uncomfortable at the tone to some of the reporting about Poland and Ukraine.  It feels a bit like we’ve decided, ‘They have it too, let’s talk about them.  Not us’.  When I say “us”, I don’t mean you, of course.

Fair enough, I thought, let’s bring this issue out, but at the start of the second half between Netherlands and Denmark when BBC commentator Jonathan Pearce reported “We haven’t heard any racist comments here today.  Not when the young, black, Dutch left back got the ball, or at any other time” I figured this is more about xenophobia than racism.  Xenophobia about Eastern Europe.

We’re no wiser about how to deal with our testosterone-fuelled under-achievers with a purpose to find than anyone else.  In fact, we’re worse for allowing our intellectuals to indulge in the last refuge of the scoundrel.

My money is on the Polish and Ukrainian fans emerging from this tournament with a better reputation than some of their Western European counterparts.

  7. blantyretim why do u want to sing about songs that would give us bad publicity in that country and with our press instead of getting behind our team with football songs that we have quite a few to sing yet we still have a go at the huns for singing theirs.lets follow our team and not let ourselves be tarnished with the reputation of the huns.listen to the crowd after 32 mins in the following clip do we really need this???????????

What about the Orange March that went by my hoose today?

  13. hamiltontim no that song just tells u how low the huns can go as well as other songs they sing but our press and the papers in england dont see it that way and we will continue to be labelled as bad as them for our songs that we dont need to sing.the huns haven’t any football songs to sing WE HAVE that is the difference lets not allow ourselves to sink to the depths they do and let us rise above them .

  14. |Sixteen roads to Golgotha not trying to lower myself as u have but do u have a mother.

The Spirit of Arthur Lee orange marches should be banned full stop.i myself detest everything about the wrotten organisation they claim to follow.

Dead on,happy days. You have made your point, don’t labour it.Because when you keep labouring your point,it then seems like you have an agenda, which has got nothing whatsoever to do with the point that you keep labouring.

    I don’t like cricket – i love it.

  17. Just finished watching Argentina v Brazil game. Made the Euro stuff so far look turgid. This was fast, furious and physical. 7 goals, a Messi hatrick, including a truly unbelievable 3rd, and a couple of red cards to round it all off.

And if I was an footballer thinking about a GB Olympic team appearance, particularly an aging has been, I would think twice before being totally outplayed and embarrassed by either of these sides!

  19. hamiltontim do u want our fans and our club compared to those south of the river.i don’t their sick chants abroad in isreal and other countries show how bad they are but when we sing our republican songs we get bad press well above them.

The minute you start caring about that which is put in print by the likes of Traynor, Leckie (**cough**), Keevins or those currently the focus of a (very) Public Inquiry is probably the same minute you need to re-evaluate your life and your own focus: do you care for the attentions of the unscrupulous or can you rise above their ignorance and live your life as untainted by their hopeful pastiche of a long gone era?

Not having a go, genuine question. Do you usually post under a different name?

Your reference to the Boys of the Old Brigade is easily qualified.

It’s offensive to those who don’t understand it. It’s that lack of understanding that needs confronted, not the song.
