You did this in 2016

Like you, I get tired of this place sometimes. We’ve all got plenty of other things going on in our lives, plenty of calls on our time and energy, the last thing we need is to deal with the consequences of a narrow win when a comprehensive victory was expected, but, of course, the compensations are immeasurable.

You get home on Christmas Eve, after a long day, and a longer year, and you read something like this:

capture-20161224-170118

The donor had been in touch and asked what the next project was.  I’ve big plans for 2017. What I’m thinking is that we use the Anniversary Year to push the core values of our community – and our club – to new levels. Like before, we’re going to do work for many causes, but I’ve a notion that the time is right to engage with Celtic fans to a greater extent than has been possible before.

A decade or so into online football communities has given us enough material to measure the impact they have had on clubs, the media and how fans relate, but what is clear, is that we are the first generation for whom it has been possible to engage an entire fan base on helping those who are most in need.

In earlier times this kind of activity was often limited to those collected together in a hall. The call wasn’t able to reach onto your lap (as it is right now). We have to acknowledge this is a new time, with new opportunities to reinvigorate our club with its founding values.

Society changes, the Celtic support has changed. We can’t infuse future generations with a love of the old country’. Frankly, it you follow the demographics, future generations of Celtic supporters will increasingly come from the native population, or England, Eastern Europe, Pakistan or elsewhere. The ‘old country’ will matter less.

What we can do is put our founding value at the core of who we are. Win, lose or draw, our mission as Celtic supporters is to be there for those most in need.

The is what we are going to do in 2017. That £1000 (+ gift aid) is the second substantial donation Mary’s Meals already have towards putting food on the table of Sean Devereux Primary School, Liberia, for a year. We’ll talk more about the work of Sean soon, and about the school in his memory.

This, of course, is just one act in the book of what you did in 2016.  I honestly don’t know how many meals were paid for, it must be around 100,000, kids were aided, and the magnificent work of Foundation was supported we discussed on Thursday was helped throughout.

We’ll have a raffle coming up on Boxing Day, which will see someone collect two tickets for Ibrox on Hogmany, with money going to the School, so look out for it – it will only be live for a couple of days.

You deserve a great Christmas – so make sure you have one!

Paul

    Apparently, said Huns, attempted to get Dave Clarke 5 song (amended to celebrate their no mark Garner) to number 1. Achieved the lofty position of Number 31. At least they achieved 55. Not bad for a 4 year old club without a credit line from a bank etc, etc.

    I have deleted a string of posts starting just before midnight through to the back of 2:00am (GMT)……………….

    Probably fair to say they included; good, bad and ugly comment – the topic was not conducted in an adult or civil manner.

    For some, homophobia can be a difficult subject to discuss – there is no need to adopt cheap and nasty phraseology or adopt an aggressive attitude if someone doesn’t agree with your view.

    The topic is not off limits – let’s apply a degree of decorum if discussing.

    ====================

    The topic certainly looks off limits as has already been pointed out to you, you deleted posts that were neither off the above!

    To completely delete everything was childish

    Am I right in saying that we now have to post in an “adult” manner.

    Cheers……although it does mean that i am posting so nae luck!

    Sorry to read that you are undergoing some kinda change at work.

    Got moved out of my job recently after 17 years and it hit me quite hard when it was time to go(im just a big jessie)

    Still HAVE to deal with that department on a daily basis and im finding it hard having to go back into it and see some of the stuff that’s going on…..others that are being paid more than i was, so in fact it is costing the NHS more, doing my job that do not have a clue what they are actually doing and more alarmingly……don’t care.

    Its a very frustrating time.

    Anyway……hope whatever is changing works out well for you.

  10. Clunks let it go mate. Moderators have a job to do and need to call it as they see it, whether your original comments were taken out of your context matters not. Everyone gets deleted eventually, except Jobo because somebody needs to know what the weather is doing. Merry Christmas to you.

    Getting a post deleted is a way of knowing you’ve had too much bevvy.

    And much less painful than other methods.

    “His remarkable turnaround shows that perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss players who are going through a tough time on the park.”

    If only all of us could adopt this approach to our young players and new signings. We cannot buy fully proven experienced players of quality. We need to develop our own and built our team up. These players need 18 months minimu to settle and find consistency.

    Look at Jozo and Rogic as more examples of guys who only showed up in flashes but are now established first team players.

    CQN new year resolution?

  17. Hrvatski Jim good point, players like Samaras took about 18 months to get the club and the jersey, even Stan took a while to gel. I think most players get thT sort or time before the blog gets on their case but still a good point that new players , especially the young ones like dembele need time and space to get it really going. Some will still need to get going like Cifti. Brendan needs space for his new players too so expect that he will cull out the ones he can’t develop. Merry Christmas mate.

    ….and reaching the dizzy heights of 31 was in spite of the efforts of Reporting Scotland plugging their effort as though they were almost at No 1.

    On another matter.

    I am guessing that most Celtic supporters , whilst hoping we can go through the season undefeated, are still expecting a slip up. It is sometimes considered that these `slip ups` occur when least expected. That being so, I really don`t expect us to falter against Ross County so does that make that game Prime Candidate for a defeat?

    It`s great being a Tim but it is not always easy 0:-)

    PS For anyone who has to drive: I have just returned to Arbroath from Glasgow. Blizzard conditions existed in the Stirling/Perth area.

  22. Just watched the Highlights of the Accies` game.

    Three very different but excellent goals;

    The Gamboa `incident` not even remotely a penalty;

    McGregor sending off a typically stupid decision by Collum.

    Was it to show how tough he can be against Scotland`s top team? Pillock.

    I bet there are still a good few worrying about the next 6 days and remaining hours.

    Anyway RIP George Michael. Didn’t care much for his music but admired his under stated charitable work and support for charitable organisations over the years.

    Happy St Stephens day to all and onwards to an undefeated season domistically bringing a nice wee treble home to paradise.

    Based on what I’ve seen this season I think the only slip up we may meet will be in the Scottish Cup.

    We have enough mentally and physically to win league games even when applying formations to beat the best bus parking we’ve seen from teams for years. The Scottish Cup were teams tend to be more up for it in a one off game, backed by an honest mistake or two is our potential banana skin.

    With no more European efforts and the winter retreat to the sun under the Bhoys wings I don’t see us faltering. Wednesday will be another difficult task to break down a parked bus but we will win. Saturday evening wil be a victory as the emergence of death will come out a bit at their roofache and try to put a wee bit of a show on for their knuckle grinding zombie legions. Brendan will setup and manipulate the Bhoys throughout the game, tweaking here and there if and when required. 4-0 to the Bhoys on Hogmanay. More likely to faulted to a draw on Wednesday if I’m being pushed to pick one were a couple of points might (this is a small might) be dropped.

    We will win the treble though going undefeated to end of season. I think Brendan wants that and I think the team wants that.

    And so does Chick Youngblood:@-)))

  30. I was given the 50th Anniversary of Lisbon DVD by my kids for Christmas.

    Just watched it.

    If you haven’t got it yet, do yourself a favour and get a hold of it. Magical.

    It might be the heightened emotion of Christmas but it’s really brilliant and quite touching.

    Lots of comments from players that I’ve not heard before.
