You did this in 2016

Like you, I get tired of this place sometimes. We’ve all got plenty of other things going on in our lives, plenty of calls on our time and energy, the last thing we need is to deal with the consequences of a narrow win when a comprehensive victory was expected, but, of course, the compensations are immeasurable.

You get home on Christmas Eve, after a long day, and a longer year, and you read something like this:

capture-20161224-170118

The donor had been in touch and asked what the next project was.  I’ve big plans for 2017. What I’m thinking is that we use the Anniversary Year to push the core values of our community – and our club – to new levels. Like before, we’re going to do work for many causes, but I’ve a notion that the time is right to engage with Celtic fans to a greater extent than has been possible before.

A decade or so into online football communities has given us enough material to measure the impact they have had on clubs, the media and how fans relate, but what is clear, is that we are the first generation for whom it has been possible to engage an entire fan base on helping those who are most in need.

In earlier times this kind of activity was often limited to those collected together in a hall. The call wasn’t able to reach onto your lap (as it is right now). We have to acknowledge this is a new time, with new opportunities to reinvigorate our club with its founding values.

Society changes, the Celtic support has changed. We can’t infuse future generations with a love of the old country’. Frankly, it you follow the demographics, future generations of Celtic supporters will increasingly come from the native population, or England, Eastern Europe, Pakistan or elsewhere. The ‘old country’ will matter less.

What we can do is put our founding value at the core of who we are. Win, lose or draw, our mission as Celtic supporters is to be there for those most in need.

The is what we are going to do in 2017. That £1000 (+ gift aid) is the second substantial donation Mary’s Meals already have towards putting food on the table of Sean Devereux Primary School, Liberia, for a year. We’ll talk more about the work of Sean soon, and about the school in his memory.

This, of course, is just one act in the book of what you did in 2016.  I honestly don’t know how many meals were paid for, it must be around 100,000, kids were aided, and the magnificent work of Foundation was supported we discussed on Thursday was helped throughout.

We’ll have a raffle coming up on Boxing Day, which will see someone collect two tickets for Ibrox on Hogmany, with money going to the School, so look out for it – it will only be live for a couple of days.

You deserve a great Christmas – so make sure you have one!

Paul

Probably fair to say they included; good, bad and ugly comment – the topic was not conducted in an adult or civil manner.

For some, homophobia can be a difficult subject to discuss – there is no need to adopt cheap and nasty phraseology or adopt an aggressive attitude if someone doesn’t agree with your view.

The topic is not off limits – let’s apply a degree of decorum if discussing.

Ross County does indeed come 1st.

Think he might play Christie up front in that one.

Just a wee thing but I think the reason we are so excited about Armstrong is that it is plain to see that he still has loads of potential. Could he become WORLD class? He’s working with the right manager and playing beside the right captain and playing for the right team for it to happen.

Cannae wait to see Kieran Tierney in the team again. Goes on the Wishaw Emerald bus to the games when he’s injured. How cool is that? He WILL be world class.

Tom Rogic’s goals compilation is getting Luboesque. The goal at Pittodrie this season was world class.

2 very good centre halfs and 2 brilliant wingers in Forrest and Sinclair.

The good thing about all these guys includind BR and SB we can easily keep them for many years.

Anyway off to the NEXT sale for work shirts.

…For some, homophobia can be a difficult subject to discuss

    —————————————————————————————-

I wasn’t involved in the spat earlier, but Moderator I have to point something out.

To use the word homophobia is to take sides with a particular group. It is a word which in itself is used by the homosexual lobby as an attack on the free speech of others. It is a nonsense word but used for a darker purpose.

One cannot discuss the homosexual acts and SSM and adoption rights without being branded a hater ad nauseum.

Yet the homosexual lobby is vociferous in its hatred against anyone not in agreement with their agenda, and they are smart enough to compartmentalise what part of the debate they wish to discuss.

Here in Australia they screamed against a plebiscite over SSM because they knew that they could not fall back on their ‘homophobia’ defence when it was a proper electoral discussion that was being jointly funded by the government: aka Free speech allowed, which spells trouble for them.

So please drop the loaded terminology Moderator.

  15. Is it just me or has this been the best season ever?

It certainly feels that way right now and i cannae ever remember feeling this good at this stage of a season.

Obviously we are only at the half way stage and things might not go as well during the remaining fixtures but i could not be happier.

Think its a lot of things combined really, 1st trophy in the cabinet, strolling the league with an almost impeccable record(even in the blip we should have scored a barrow load) while playing fantastic attacking fitba and it all happening so quickly after the way it went last year.

The Centenary season was amazing and Martins 1st too and there’s been a few that we have won the double on the last game of the season so its not been until then that ive felt that was brilliant, but for some reason i feel so much at ease and happy with it all this year!

  17. Unstoppable Celtic close in on Lisbon Lions’ 50-year-old record

    Roddy Forsyth

    25 DECEMBER 2016 • 10:30PM

Last week saw the winter solstice but Wednesday marks the Scottish Premiership’s winter equinox – not a contradiction in terms but rather the moment when half the league campaign is behind and half yet to unfold.

Those who might feel the need to propitiate the gods of football by sacrificing virgins or dancing naked around the sacred holly bush of Pan are all in the bottom half of the table. Those above know already what lies between now and summer.

Celtic will win their sixth successive title, quite likely before spring has sprung. The only questions concern how many points they will accumulate and by how many they will lead the runners-up who, at this stage, look increasingly likely to be Sevco.

The champions’ sequence of successive unbeaten games now stands at 22, following their 3-0 victory at Hamilton on Christmas Eve, and the prospect of them overtaking the Lisbon Lions’ 50-year-old post-war record of 26 was reinforced by the manner of their win at the SuperSeal Stadium.

The slog through December to the midwinter break had seen Celtic’s margin confined to a single goal in each of the three matches on the approach to this fixture. On Saturday, when Accies were trailing only by Leigh Griffiths’s predatory strike, Willie Collum offered the home side a bonus that none of Celtic’s previous opponents this season have been granted – he reduced the champions’ numbers.

Callum McGregor became the first Celtic player to see a red card, in his case an accumulation of two yellows, the second for what the referee judged to be a high challenge on Scott McMann. McGregor’s dismissal angered Brendan Rodgers, who vented his feelings on the matter afterwards, but the Parkhead manager was at least gratified by the consequences.

Celtic scored more goals with 10 men than they had achieved with 11, as Stuart Armstrong and Moussa Dembele supplemented Griffiths’s opener. Armstrong’s was a delight, a perfectly-controlled strike from 25 yards high into Gary Woods’s net.

As has been observed more than once in these pages, Armstrong has made significant strides as a footballer under Rodgers. Having been employed largely as a wide midfielder by Ronny Deila, Armstrong was told by the Norwegian’s successor that henceforth his work would be done in the centre of the park.

“It was important to hear the manager say that,” said Armstrong. “My first 18 months at the club were spent with a majority of it on the left-hand side.

“That was okay, because I wanted to play but, ultimately, I wanted to get into the middle and that was my ambition. It’s where I felt I could be best and there was a slight frustration building when those opportunities were not coming.

“First and foremost, I want to play and will play wherever a manager wants me to play, but I had a good conversation with the gaffer at the beginning of the season where we exchanged certain things and we came to the conclusion that the middle was my best position.

“Then it was up to me to prove that I could play there. For him to show the faith in me to do that gave me something to work towards and it’s something I really enjoy doing.

“We have a manager who will give you opportunities if you are willing to work, adding bits to the team that he wanted from them and from me. It was then up to me in that respect and you have to take your chance when you get it.”

In the narrower meaning of the term, that is exactly what he did against Hamilton but the 24 year-old was content to rank individual effort below a subscription to the collective. “I was really happy with that goal, but more than anything I was happy to contribute for the team,” he said.

“What happened shows our versatility and how strong we are as a group, in the sense that we probably had more opportunities when we went down to 10 men than we had with 11 men on the pitch. That makes it pleasing because the aim was to win as usual and, through a busy December, we’ve done it again.”

That said, Armstrong plays in the proximity of Scott Brown, whose focused promptings of team mates begins when he leads them out for their warm-up, a characteristic evident to anybody near the tunnel when he emerges at their head.

“Broony is the controller,” Armstrong said of the Celtic captain. “His dedication and hard work has been incredible.

“Since I came here I’ve been in awe of the work he does both in games and training. After the goal, he said: ‘Are you feeling alright?’

“Our aim is to be relentless in the league but we don’t get ahead of ourselves. That’s the way we work.”

Celtic have a game in hand, so their league season’s midway stage will come against Sevco at Ibrox on Saturday, but their progress has been such that all the others will remain in their shadow for the remainder of the campaign.

I hope indeed he plays Christie and uses the squad to its full.I also like what Brendan is doing introducing youngsters like Calvin, atchison and ralston, no better feeling when our own come through.

With Armstrong I thibk he is capable of taking more resposibility, just like he has done this last month.I hope with his own ambition and intelligence matching Brendans coaching I agree he has the potential to be world class

Kierans career got off to a flyer, before his injury he was improving a little bit with each game.having seen a few clipsonline he apappears grounded

am glad Tom is spending more game time playing and his stamina is improving

Long may it continue and long may we treat each game as our first and go for the jugular.

    Hail hail

One thing that really stood out for me about KT has been the way his fitness has developed since he 1st appeared in the side.

From getting cramp and looking absolutely knackered as a game went on, he now looks like he could run all day long.

Its great to see the young lads being given a crack at it but its quite hard(for me anyway)to appreciate just how much more physically demanding making that step up is for them and what difference being another year older can mean to them as they grow from bhoys to men.
