You did this in 2016

Like you, I get tired of this place sometimes. We’ve all got plenty of other things going on in our lives, plenty of calls on our time and energy, the last thing we need is to deal with the consequences of a narrow win when a comprehensive victory was expected, but, of course, the compensations are immeasurable.

You get home on Christmas Eve, after a long day, and a longer year, and you read something like this:

capture-20161224-170118

The donor had been in touch and asked what the next project was.  I’ve big plans for 2017. What I’m thinking is that we use the Anniversary Year to push the core values of our community – and our club – to new levels. Like before, we’re going to do work for many causes, but I’ve a notion that the time is right to engage with Celtic fans to a greater extent than has been possible before.

A decade or so into online football communities has given us enough material to measure the impact they have had on clubs, the media and how fans relate, but what is clear, is that we are the first generation for whom it has been possible to engage an entire fan base on helping those who are most in need.

In earlier times this kind of activity was often limited to those collected together in a hall. The call wasn’t able to reach onto your lap (as it is right now). We have to acknowledge this is a new time, with new opportunities to reinvigorate our club with its founding values.

Society changes, the Celtic support has changed. We can’t infuse future generations with a love of the old country’. Frankly, it you follow the demographics, future generations of Celtic supporters will increasingly come from the native population, or England, Eastern Europe, Pakistan or elsewhere. The ‘old country’ will matter less.

What we can do is put our founding value at the core of who we are. Win, lose or draw, our mission as Celtic supporters is to be there for those most in need.

The is what we are going to do in 2017. That £1000 (+ gift aid) is the second substantial donation Mary’s Meals already have towards putting food on the table of Sean Devereux Primary School, Liberia, for a year. We’ll talk more about the work of Sean soon, and about the school in his memory.

This, of course, is just one act in the book of what you did in 2016.  I honestly don’t know how many meals were paid for, it must be around 100,000, kids were aided, and the magnificent work of Foundation was supported we discussed on Thursday was helped throughout.

We’ll have a raffle coming up on Boxing Day, which will see someone collect two tickets for Ibrox on Hogmany, with money going to the School, so look out for it – it will only be live for a couple of days.

You deserve a great Christmas – so make sure you have one!

Paul

Dont know where this “American football”is garbage comes from.Their national team do very well.Superb athletes.Anyway, nationalities dont come into it.Slovakia,Lubo,Japan,Naka,Sweden,Henrik and Zlatan.Scotland,Lee Wallace.

    Eh !!!!!.

Nagbe will be our next fantastic signing. You heard it here last.

I never talked about the players, there’s been plenty of good American footballers, I’m talking about the quality of the league.

It’s the same argument about Scotland, the SPL is awful yet there are a few Scottish players that go for big money and play in “better” leagues despite my own opinon that said players are average :O)

My point was, I don’t know if Nagbe is good or not because the standard he plays at is so low

  3. Massive respect to all concerned with Resolution 12. These brave guys shone a light on the corruption, deceit and lies that is Scottish football at no small expense to themselves. For that we will forever owe them a huge debt of gratitude. Hh

    Turkeybhoy on 26th December 2016 9:30 pm,

I know what you are saying, but my point was so many players play in leagues that are not glamorous, pretty poor, but that does not reflect on the player. The list is endless. As I said Naka, from at the time ,a poor Japanese league.Petrov, poor Bulgarian league.Victor Wanyama.Poor leagues, poor international teams.I do watch quite a bit of the American league games, and it is fast, skilfull, and very competitive. The USA national team have done very well. Was only making a point, not arguing with your opinion.

I may have had drink taken recently but I have a wee recollection of hearing Chick Young on Radio Shortbread commenting on the death of Rick Parfitt and asking if Status Quo were still THE Status Quo without him.

Was he being ironic? sarcastic? attempting humour? or operating double standards?

    Did anyone else hear this?

    ———————————————–

On Radio Scotland after we beat Hamilton on Saturday? Think he did say what you recollect. On the basis that he is incapable of irony/sarcasm and adept at double standards, but seems to think he’s entertaining, I’m thinking he thought it humorous. But he was boring as usual. The whole show was shambolic.

  11. Looks like the Nagbe deal may be off

    Quote:

CELTIC have told USA midfielder Darlington Nagbe his January move to Parkhead is now OFF.

Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers wanted to sign the Portland Timbers star in a £3million deal.

But SunSport can reveal the Premiership champions have informed Nagbe they’re walking away from talks.

The 26-year-old had visited Parkhead for the Champions League clash with Barcelona and was given the VIP treatment.

He was TOP of Rodgers’ wish-list and the MLS ace was expected to seal his move early in the New Year as negotiations have been progressing in the last few weeks over a £10,000-a-week contract.

But Parkhead sources have revealed that transfer talks have now dramatically collapsed at the eleventh hour.

Celts have already made it clear to Timbers’ chiefs that they’re looking at alternative targets.

And it’s highly unlikely they’ll return to the table and do a deal to land the ten-times capped USA international.

It’s believed boss Rodgers has TWO other possibilities as he looks to strengthen his side next month.

Deals for those players are the ones he will look to progress ahead of the January transfer window opening.

The collapse of the Nagbe deal is something he’s prepared for with the Hoops boss still confident he could add to his squad before they jet out to Dubai for training camp on January 6.

John Spencer, meanwhile, says Celtic have missed out on the best American player in the MLS.

Former Rangers and Chelsea star Spenny signed Nagbe for Portland in 2011.

And he said: “I’d heard all about Celtic being interested in him and it didn’t surprise me in the slightest. At this moment I’d say he’s one of the best players in the entire MLS and certainly the best American.

“The fee was small for someone of that quality. Celtic aren’t going to get anyone better anywhere in the world for that money.

“When he was over in Glasgow to see the Barcelona game last month he sent me a text to say he was in my hometown and that Celtic were interested.

“That’s the kind of thing that’s typical of him. As a player he’s great but he’s also one of the nicest kids I’ve come across in the game.

“I’d seen him playing for the University of Akron in the drafts and for me he was the best young player in the country at the time by a mile.

“We were an expansion club along with Vancouver so we got the first picks in the draft and I was delighted to land Darlington.

“To tell you the truth, I identified him from the start and he was the ONLY one I wanted out of the draft that year.

“We had real high hopes for him from the start and he soon justified it.

“His technical ability is outstanding. There are plenty of players who can see a pass but he can see a pass and has the ability to make it as well.

“He’s also lightning quick, either without the ball or dribbling with it.

“Overall, in terms of guys playing in the final third, there aren’t many better on American soil.”

  20. I’ve seen Darlington Nagbe play three times, including one Portland “derby” versus their close rivals the Seattle Sounders.

My opinion was that he was quality, technical skill, very pacy and likes the odd crunching tackle.

He would seem to be the ideal Brendan style player, but would need some time to settle in, especially as the MLS is a summer league.
