Zombie EBT tales, Medicine for Reo

175

I see there is a bit of sensitivity across the city today, on the 11th anniversary of Rangers liquidation.  Fair enough.  We are all entitled to our own backstory and if the shoe was on the other foot, we would be clinging to dear life to whatever comforts we could.  As the years go by, however, a re-writing can creep in.  For example, “EBTs were used by Celtic and lots of other clubs, Rangers were just victimised by HMRC”, is a new article of the faithless.

Just in case you encounter a Halloween zombie believing in such fairytales tonight, set him right.  Celtic funded an EBT with one payment (only).  They declared this to HMRC and paid the tax.  The payment was not subject to a contract, hidden from the football and taxation authorites or otherwise.  It wasn’t the EBT that was Rangers’ problem, it was using the scheme as disguised renumeration, the failure to pay tax on this renumeration and the failure to submit player employment contracts which noted these payments to the SFA and SPL, as both bodies require in order to ensure rules are followed and a level playing field.

News confirmed yesterday afternoon, that Reo Hatate would miss the remainder of the year because of a hamstring injury picked up on Wednesday, presents a significant problem for Celtic.  Without Reo, we are slower, lacking his speed of thought and movement.  This correlates with results, which are poorer without him.  I think this is a real problem.

Liel Abada, another of our main creative talents, will also be missing until around the same time, leaving Brendan Rodgers with a challenge when facing packed Premiership defences.  He is not short of central midfield options, but there is not a clear substitute for Hatate, anymore than there is for Abada.  These talents are scarce in football.

For Reo, this is the fourth consecutive season he has suffered a hamstring injury, confirming a fragility he has in both legs.  The winter break starts after 2 January, after which we have a Scottish Cup tie and a home game against Ross County on 27 January.  That County game should be his target.  There is no point rushing him back for New Year, take the treatment and allow the injury a full three months to heal.

He is 25 years old, with his talent, injury profile and new contract, he is a player we can anticipate staying at Celtic for a long time.  We should take the medicine and invest whatever time necessary now to give him the best chance of a full recovery.

I think it’s a culmination of things to be honest.

  2. onenightinlisbon on

The statement is clear by the board and refers to a number of health and safety issues.

I think we would all agree that the health and safety of supporters would take priority and it’s clear that the GB have been notified of the board’s concerns.

  3. The Club should also note that it has been advised of a number of banners and flags used by the Green Brigade which relate to or are connected with terrorist organisations involved in the conflict in the Middle East. This is completely unacceptable at Celtic Park and any match involving Celtic Football Club. The Club is continuing to investigate these and other unacceptable instances of the groups actions.

    ———-

anyone seen banners and flags linked to terrorist organisations which ones ?

the supporters clubs tri colours with the names of irish freedom fighters , or is it other ones ?

anyone seen evidence of any ?

No chance of support where I sit.

The folk around me are all football experts who can spot a scapegoat in a second.

Sadly any attempt to actually encourage or suppprt the team is viewed as suspicious troublemaking. Not the Celtic way it seems.

It seems you really should ensure you ridicule every well meaning attempt with the after comment of ‘he’ll no do’ we need another experienced full back / centre mid / centre back / striker. Or else just Taylor’s a dud / Forrest’ again oh no / or recently Calum is past it / Oh is never a striker.

Don’t expect anything like actual encouragement. Heaven forbid.

  5. more irony – define positive support ?

that would get many posters on here banned.

    —————–

To be clear, the Club values engagement with any and all supporters and supporter groups who wish to positively support Celtic.

    Totally agree, no terrorist flags.

    The safety issues though?

Among the Palestinian flags displayed in the GB area last Wednesday were a couple of the green Hamas flags.

  8. I’ve no objection to anyone waving flags or letting off flares at Celtic Park or anywhere else.

As long as they pay the fines.

    Ta Tom.

    a couple ?

would that have been easy for the police and stewards to take action there and then if the flags are proscirbed ?

As to the safety issues of storming gates and getting illegal entry , why dont police lift them there and then ?

easire for them to go after the whole group and present it to PLC| as “here is the group we dont like, so ban them all will you please

it is not going to end well.

meanwhile some US Billionaire to invest in Hibs,

I’m not much bothered to be honest, I’d rather every Celtic employee gets a fair crack of the whip and I don’t see that his surname should mean he gets unfairly judged as long as he does the job for Celtic but that’s not going to happen so 🤷‍♀️ comes with the job I guess

*Its always been that way, Benny Rooney, Jimmy Quinn, Paul Chalmers etc all cum tae mind and it’s the reason Kevin Gallacher has admitted he never come tae us and I have no doubt possibly John McGinn had 2nd thoughts when Steve Bruce made him an offer.

  11. The so called Hamas flags for all those who do not speak Arabic was a translation of Celtic Ultras on white on a green background. Maybe do a little research first ghuys

  12. Why should anybody get fined for waving a national flag. Singling out one flag over another reeks of politics and to be honest racism as these people are deemed lesser than the rest. What if a fan whips out the Star of David when Abada returns. Should he be thrown out

  13. Guys

My son and his girlfriend are booked up for Madrid. A couple of tickets they thought they had secured have fallen through. So, if anyone knows of any spares can they please let me know.

    Cheers.

  14. Every league game we play from now on this season is a Champions League qualifier….and now we’re going to play in a fekin library.

    Well done the Celtic board.

A victory for every Celtic hater in Scotland.

Listen to the howls and boos tomorrow night that will seem ten times louder after a misplaced pass by Greg Taylor or Joe Hart.

Watch players play safe passes instead of trying something different and retreat into their shells.

Anyone Celtic fan supporting this ban is a clown.

I think someone posted earlier about having a spare but I cannot find it now !

  16. Laxalt

    I kinda agree with you.

    This really does not help.

We need hi energy, dynamism and pace from the start tomorrow night. And every game tbh.

Hard to get this if we have 55000 experts sat critiquing every pass or run.

  17. Lisbon Lions Upper on

While I don’t think the GB are innocent victims in this, ultimately their suspension does us no favours. It feels like yet another self inflicted wound and a failure of the club to effectively engage.

  18. As the corporate custodians of the Celtic PLC temporarily blanket ban the self-appointed, geo-humanitarian conscience of a fanbase faction for what reads like breaching previously communicated safety rules, intimidating some staff or stewards, letting pals in for free, setting aff ‘fireworks’ in a tightly enclosed area with some of these uberfans sometimes hiding their faces to avoid identification (why would ye dae that, bud?) et al, it’s important to remember the words of the immortal Jock…

“Neither the Celtic replica shirts nor heated hospitality seats – and the egos both contain – do not shrink to fit those of yer average team supporter.”

And now, inspired by what someone else said; the Board has put the cull in culmination.

    AMERINGUE? CSC

  19. Thanks guys. It was Adi Dassler who posted yesterday. Hopefully, he’ll see my message and respond.

    👍

  20. I think the Celtic board are opening up a can of worms in mentioning ‘terrorist’ flags and giving the media a stick to beat all Celtic fans with.

If they are referring to Hamas flags they should bear in mind that Hamas is only designated a terrorist group by ‘white’ countries (US, EU, UK , Canada, Australia plus literally 1 or 2 others). The UN has rejected attempts to designate Hamas as such. The BBC and other news outlets for this reason do not refer to Hamas as terrorists, despite heavy political pressure to do so.

If the rationale is that we play in Britain & the government here has designated Hamas as terrorists, so we must act accordingly, then it will not take the media long to join the dots with our song book, the Ra etc. How long before they call the board out on ‘hypocrisy’ and demand Celtic throw the GB out altogether? Remember the sainted Souness, beloved of RTE television, calling us ‘Scotland’s shame’ not so long ago? Not wise from those in charge of the club.

I cannot comment on the safety issues and I’m no fan of either Hamas or the Ra, but the conflating of the safety & politics issues paints all our support in a bad light

Maybe the real issue in that those running the club are embarrassed by the displays of sympathy for the Palestinian people? After all they already asked the support not to display the Palestinian flag .

We keep hearing that fans should stick to football and leave the politics out, but maybe it’s our board who should stick to the football and let those who actually fund the club decide how they want to express their support.

  21. Full focus tomorrow night Celts ..no more slip ups …do you’re talking on the park …forget about the off the park side show …the only thing that should matter to you is once again playing at the top of your profession( champions league ) next year …only you can achieve this …because as we all know no one else will help…we are by far the best team in Scotland …take your chance in forthcoming games to prove it 🍀

  22. Also wee note to self and fellow supporters …Get behind the team …create the atmosphere in GB absence …we have enough enemies without let’s not create any within ..,hail hail 🍀

  23. shocking decision from the board , just hope all those in agreement with the decision get together and create an atmosphere worthy of the occasion , or Celtic Park will be like a morgue tomorrow night , god forbid the result goes against us.

  24. Has the club now done the sums and recon that the money they get in from the Green Brigade is lower than the fines? Pure business decision.
