Kilmarnock 2-2 Celtic

335

You know what happens when you fail to defend properly, so watching Celtic be punished for Izzie failing to stop a cross, Efe allowing a man to cut in front of him, and Izzie getting into a mess, allowing his man to get behind him and run into the box, will not be a surprise. Defend like that and you don’t deserve any more from the game.

There was a vastly more interesting aspect on display.

Commons invention for Griffiths’ 2nd minute goal was a treat, four minutes later Commons shot forced MacDonald into a save. Then on 8 minutes Rogic forced a save and 60 seconds later Griffiths shot from distance was saved. On 11 minutes Forrest’s shot was saved and on 17 minutes another Commons shot was saved.

In making that last shot, Commons grimaced in pain and that was that. Celtic didn’t have another shot on target until Nir Bitton’s spectacular goal. Kris retired to the bench soon after that grimace to pack ice on his thigh, and Celtic’s game fell apart.

What price that Malmo manager, Age Hereide, underlined the words Stop Commons in his notebook?

The remainder of the game was a lottery. We should have won, on the balance of chances, but we weren’t good enough to make sure. When Kris Commons gets that ice off, Ronny had better replace it with cotton wool.

Nice Panenka from Higginbotham.

  3. Actually I enjoyed watching tonight’s game much more than I did on Sunday. Probably because I’ve always been a ‘performance’ over ‘results’ fan. Slightly disappointed that our 100% domestic record (both in terms of points and goals conceded) was lost tonight but certainly not disheartened.

Particularly encouraged by Janko, Bitton and Forrest all of whom I thought performed well.

Absolutely no qualms from me over the penalty. and given that it was for an 87th minute equaliser how cool was the penalty taker – cat doffed as they say round these parts.

  5. More positives than negatives tonight.

James shows us just what pure natural talent can bring to our team. Forget Commons, we need to find a way to keep Forrest fit and central to our play.

Thought Janko was decent and some of our passing through midfield was a delight to watch.

On a different day, with Griffiths more clinical would have been 5 or 6.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the performance of James Forrest.

That was a 9/10 for him tonight.

It should raise his confidence no end.

    How can Malmö stop him?

Probably only by doing what Killie did.

Kick, hack, hassle, trip, barge with impunity.

  9. Too many fans happy with Celtic just turning up and watching match with blinkers on, remove the blinkers open your eyes we are not as good as what the papers, radio etc. make out , players start to believe all the hype and drop their standards and get away with being told they are tired our I’ve got a slight knock and disappear for weeks on end , our squad is poor we must play our best starting 11 in ALL games.

  10. Bit of positivity in terms of the CL qualifiers – Of the back 4 only big Virgil will play against Malmo IMO. Boyata, lustiG and mulgrew will play.

The midfield will be brown, johannson, biton, gms and one of Armstrong or forest. Ciftci up front.

So what did the Malmo coach learn today?

    Not much.

    1 up to ronny.

  11. We play 9 games in August and 3 of them are CL qualifiers.

We know that continuity of selection improves results but also raises the prospect of favoured players being injured and missing crucial CL qualifiers.

The price of using fringe players is a disruption to team pattern and smoothness.

And it is a price worth paying.

Every August to November, the Chicken Littles predict failure and humiliation for Celtic, and, to be fair, they had plenty of ammunition last year with the Legia debacle.

Every March to May, the Chicken Littles stop squawking as we sew up another league. But despite migrating away for the early summer, they are back and noisy in the following July to October period with more dire predictions, delivered with an unmerited confidence.

Celtic played well tonight – offensively. Yes, they were wasteful but they were highly productive in creating chances to waste. I am always more confident of a Celtic team that has been wasteful than I am of one that is turgid and lacks threat.

We were too open at the back and, though I did not agree with the Lustig penalty shout, I felt Izzy’s was a justified penalty.

As for John Collins words, Partick Thistle were the first team to have an opportunity to claim they were motivated by them- but they quietly removed the article from the wall after they failed to trouble us. Killie were braver tonight but they’d have a real cheek if they referenced John’s words as they were resolutely outplayed in obtaining a lucky draw.

I don’t expect we’ll see James Forrest on Saturday and I’d happily see Commons, Brown and even, Bitton rested too. Even at the expense of more dropped points, even a defeat, and lots of squawking from new posters who have no disguise other than adding 67 to their FF poster name.

I remain a happy Celt. Malmo will be worried by our attackers but Malmo ain’t the next game.

Looking forward to the ICT game with another makeshift 11- Malmo can wait

  13. Tonight’s 2-2 draw away to Kilmarnock was Ronny Deila’s 50th domestic match in charge of Celtic, and it was a match that Celtic should have won comfortably.

As it happens, Neil Lennon’s 50th domestic match in charge of Celtic was also away to Kilmarnock, although his team did a rather better job of putting away their chances, recording a 4-0 victory in that match.

Ronny’s domestic record after 50 matches at the helm is as follows:

Ronny Deila’s record in domestic matches in charge of Celtic currently reads:

    Played 50

    Won 38

    Drawn 7

    Lost 5

    Scored 116

    Conceded 23

    Clean sheets 31

    Failed to score 5

Ronny’s team has won 76.0% of it’s domestic games and lost just one in 10.0.

It has kept a clean sheet in 62.0% of those games whilst scoring in 90.0% of them, averaging 2.32 goals scored and 0.46 conceded per game.

For comparison, Neil Lennon’s record after 50 domestic games read:

    Played 50

    Won 40

    Drawn 5

    Lost 5

    Scored 114

    Conceded 34

    Clean sheets 26

    Failed to score 3

So in spite of NL’s intimate knowledge of Celtic FC and his familiarity with most of the players when he started his time at the helm, and in spite of Ronny’s alleged dodgy start to his tenure, the difference between the two amounts to tonight’s draw (vs NL’s 4-0 win) and one other draw for RD where NL’s team won a game. RD’s team has actually been marginally better in terms of goals scored, and significantly better defensively.

Overall I’d say that probably makes them pretty even in terms of overall success over 50 games (which I’ll bet not many people realise!). Let’s see how RD builds on his success to date…

  14. I don’t feel a sense of grievance when we drop points but tonight we were the architects of our own downfall.

Amaatuerish would be kind to describe izzy at the penalty.

He knows the rules in Scotland so no excuses though it was soft.

I believe it would not have been given at other end.

We never look like a unit there were huge gaps allover field.

Leigh had a poor game tonight and snatched at numerous chances.

Biton and Rogic were to close together to be effective and Johansen always tries but his decision making and passing was terrible.

GMS was to wide on left and was often left with back pass as only outlet.

McGregor was not on long enough to be judged.

Ref was tolerant of them leaving the foot in or tackling from behind.

The linesman who in the first half kept his flag down on marginal calls when Killie attacked in first approached the second half with a different zeal.

If Ronny had played our strongest team, and a couple of them had taken a knock, he would have been slaughtered, he rings the changes like he did at ICT last year, he gets slaughtered.

    —————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Forget the ” would have beens “.that`s conjecture on your part.

What it means is that Ronny has learned nothing from his mistake one year ago.

    Mr.Collins ? Feeling chastened,are you?

Very well done ,Killie. A kick up the proverbial for hubris.

  17. BT is bang on…

He’s not the best passer of a ball but looks better than he is.

  18. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

You could see that coming in the first half. Not the first Celtic team to capitulate as a result of problems of their own creation and won’t be the last, unfortunately.

But, I’m unhappy and have been for some time with our present manager’s set-up in the SPFL. We are set up not to score ie one forward, with a collection of mid-fielders who seldom convert. It’s a simple enough game and the lack of immediate and direct threat, inevitably costs us.

We watch the same movie, every week. Emelio, great going forward with the exception of that crucial delivery. He is as likely to overhit the ball as slice it. Is he coached, presumably, but that problem prevails and if he can’t change then he should be replaced.

I’m not getting at the Honduran specifically, simply using him as an example. We have several similar, consistent issues in the team. Passing is another, or to be more accurate the inability to pass the ball. That malaise set in midway through the first half tonight and allowed Killie to get into the game.

Another is the player’s choice of when to pass or shoot. It’s bloody frustrating.

But it’s the one forward issue that stymies Celtic, more than anything, just now. It leaves us slow and predictable. Those of you who attend the game will watch Celtic shuttle the ball around a lot ? Why is that ? I think it’s the lack of players in a forward area.

In short I’m concerned RD doesn’t or won’t learn.

Broony, commons, VVD, have a decent game , nine times out of ten .. No, one in ten …

If he was consistently playing well … Then maybe he’d be worth a mention ..

  20. Woeful performance tonight – disappointing that some of the fringe guys didn’t step up.

People were referring to Crawford Allan during the game as ‘the MIB’…. I would just like to confirm that he is absolutely a very active ‘M’.

  21. In the 11th tier of English fitba I’m forever seeing goals like Nir Bitton’s and runs like James Forrest makes. They are nothing special.

We won’t have competition until the mighty Rangers are back to put us to the sword.

Is that the kind of thing, you’re looking for Mr. Traynor?

Celtic played well tonight – offensively.

We just fell a tad short tonight.

  25. Craigellachie10 on

Disappointing result tonight but nevertheless some positives. Firstly Forrest who was as good as I’ve seen him for a while.

Secondly the fact that probably only 6 of the starting line up will start next week.

Negatives the fact that we couldn’t close the game

  26. davidopoulos

Totally agree, but we all know they’re against us – it’s never been a level playing field in Scotland

Think Derk got a two match ban for something similar in my opinion

But izzy was silly and I reiterate the point, in Europe would be given – see Samaras v Spartak

  27. the glorious balance sheet on

You see the true value of Scott Brown when he`s not there. Badly missed tonight.

No point getting too worked up about a team top heavy with fringe players dropping points. Rogic has played about 5 games in the last 2 years, it was Janko`s first game of the season, Efe is Efe, with all that we were never going to show our A game tonight.

I`m more worried about the lack of creativity that we saw in the two games v Qarabag. I posted on here at half-time of the home leg v Qarabag that the only way I could see us scoring was from a set piece. I cant remember us creating such few chances from open play in any 2 legged European tie before. I cant see a physical side like Malmo giving us much joy from set pieces so I`m at a loss to think where goals are going to come from next week and in Sweden.

I`ll expect to see the MSM wetting themselves over the prospect of a Hearts “challenge” to Celtic. No doubt they`re already positioning Robbie Neilson as this season`s Derek McInnes.

  29. Fitness permitting we should start on Saturday with the starting eleven we intend to play against Malmo. For me it should be

I’d rather lose goals tonight than next week. Tonight’s defensive set up is miles away from next Wednesday’s. Lustig and Boyata will be back, so I’m not going to get my knickers in a twist. If the Malmö manager learned anything tonight it was probably that he had wasted an air fare. Tonight’s team should have won by a country mile but it will bear very little resemblance to next Wednesday’s.

I very much doubt if the Malmö management team will be back in Glasgow before next Tuesday. Ronny also stated tonight that none of the players taken off were injured – We’ll see.

Celtic’s game fell apart? Did you fall asleep Paul67. I thought tonight’s game was great entertainment, btw that’s what I want to see in a game of football, because for me this was a great performance from our team. The worrying thing for me is that we had 28 chances on goal and only scored 2.
