O’Neills’ achievements

888

Delighted for Martin O’Neill on taking Ireland into the last 16 of the Euros. Since his salad days ended at Celtic, Martin’s had more downs than ups as a manager. I felt the game had moved on from him, even during his five years at Celtic, the game tactically moved away from him, but he’s one of a number of managers of small nations who have overachieved.

I’m not buying Roy Keane’s tears, though. Reaching the last 16 of the Euros is a great achievement, but he disparaged Mick McCarthy’s achievement with Ireland in going out of the 2002 World Cup in the last 16 to Spain on penalties.  Maybe it’s time for some humility from Roy.

If anything, Michael O’Neill’s achievements with the north has been even greater. Michael was mentioned as a possible Celtic manager before Brendan’s appointment, but the point was made to me, whatever he achieved in qualifying, he could be embarrassed in all three Euros games. Now he needs to beat Wales for a place in the quarter finals.

The group stages have been a delight. Some big tactical lessons for underdogs, and for teams who face 10 men behind the ball every week. If you don’t make defensive mistakes you can win any game, possession and territorial advantage is a mirage of influence.

The pound is taking a nose dive, already lost 11% – apparently a 30 year low.

Prediction – referendum result will be put before Parliament for ratification and MPs boot it into touch because of the ‘narrow’ majority (my prediction).

Watch the share prices crash when the Markets open. FTSE 100 closed at 6338.10 yesterday.

    Now there we differ,Pete.

    Democracy is the key.

Apparently immigration was a significant factor in this referendum.

If so , it was the first chance for the British people to have their say on that issue .

We have woken up in a different country. The Britain that existed until 23 June 2016 will not exist any more.

For those who ran the leave campaign – and for the clear majority who voted to leave the European Union – that is a cause for celebration. This, they insist, will be remembered as our “independence day”. From now, they say, Britain will be a proud, self-governing nation unshackled by the edicts of Brussels.

But for the 48% who voted the other way, and for most of the watching world, Britain is changed in a way that makes the heart sink rather than soar.

For one thing, there is now a genuine question over the shape of this kingdom. Scotland (like London) voted to remain inside the European Union. Every one of its political parties (bar the UK Independence Party) urged a remain vote. Yet now Scotland is set to be dragged out of the EU, against its collective will.

The demand will be loud and instant for Scotland to assure its own destiny by breaking free of the UK. This is precisely the kind of “material change” that the Scottish National party always said would be enough to warrant a second referendum to follow the one held in 2014. And this time, surely, there will be a majority for independence. So a first legacy of 23 June could well be the imminent break-up of the UK.

The implications will be profound for Northern Ireland too. The return of a “hard border” between north and south imperils a peace which was hard-won and too often taken for granted. Note this morning’s warning from Sinn Fein that the British government has “forfeited any mandate to represent the economic and political interests of people in Northern Ireland.”

Of course, the divisions don’t end there. England is exposed as a land divided: London, along with the cities of Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Bristol stood apart from the rest of England and Wales in wanting to stay in. There is a yawning class divide, pitting city against town and, more profoundly, those who feel they have something to lose against those who feel they do not. What determined the outcome as much as anything else was the fact that the latter group, many concentrated in what used to be called Labour heartlands, defied the party’s call and voted out. This is a deep rift that will haunt the politics of the coming era. Labour’s prospects will stand or fall on how they navigate it – and they are not the only ones.

I voted leave. I am neither a bigot, a bully, or a bampot. This is a vote against the establishment and the money-men. Just like I voted with my feet against Celtic Plc by not renewing my season ticket (despite the Rodgers hysteria), the U.K. has voted. If Scotland wants to stay in Europe its path is clear. Will Scotland’s leadership now show the strength needed to reflect the will of the people and lead us from unit with the restof the UK?

  21. I was denied a vote in the referendum. This morning I feel disappointed. I have been an immigrant worker for the last 25 years in different countries and now Britain has voted Leave. I am not alone in wondering what future we will have – so many questions are unanswered but there are rules in place, that we know.

Not sure of the consequences on your average Joe, and we will have to wait several years for it all to unravel.

I always felt that the Referendum was a Tory stitch-up in the first place and they got what they wanted.
