O’Neills’ achievements

888

Delighted for Martin O’Neill on taking Ireland into the last 16 of the Euros. Since his salad days ended at Celtic, Martin’s had more downs than ups as a manager. I felt the game had moved on from him, even during his five years at Celtic, the game tactically moved away from him, but he’s one of a number of managers of small nations who have overachieved.

I’m not buying Roy Keane’s tears, though. Reaching the last 16 of the Euros is a great achievement, but he disparaged Mick McCarthy’s achievement with Ireland in going out of the 2002 World Cup in the last 16 to Spain on penalties.  Maybe it’s time for some humility from Roy.

If anything, Michael O’Neill’s achievements with the north has been even greater. Michael was mentioned as a possible Celtic manager before Brendan’s appointment, but the point was made to me, whatever he achieved in qualifying, he could be embarrassed in all three Euros games. Now he needs to beat Wales for a place in the quarter finals.

The group stages have been a delight. Some big tactical lessons for underdogs, and for teams who face 10 men behind the ball every week. If you don’t make defensive mistakes you can win any game, possession and territorial advantage is a mirage of influence.

The English haven’t spoken as a nation.

Look at the way the vote differs according to geographical location and educational achievement. Much as it was in Scotland after the independence referendum

And England is as divided this morning as Scotland has been since the independence referendum.

Hopefully this time the Yes campaign have a clear strategy for currency and terms of membership of EU agreed in advance. Also Sturgeon leading a Yes campaign is far more palatable for many than the divisive (Marmite) Salmond

The facts tend to disagree. :

She was raised in the small, country side town of Templin, roughly 50 miles north of Berlin, in the German Democratic Republic (also known as East Germany). Living in the GDR meant that she was a part of the socialist-led Free German Youth movement. Through this organization she showed her leadership skills at a young age becoming a district board representative and secretary of Agitprop – the agitation and propaganda campaign of the youth movement. Merkel did not however, “take part in the secular coming of age ceremony Jugendweihe” * which was very popular in East Germany.

Her family, led by her father who was a Lutheran pastor, had “sympathetic” views towards the communist regime of the GDR because they were given freedoms typically denied to Christian pastors – such as easily crossing from West Germany to East Germany, and owning two cars.

  14. Wow, amazed by the result to leave but not dismayed.

Fully expect Merkel & Hollande to pressure Brussels in to offering the UK a sweetheart deal for another referendum within 2 years. The pressure they will be under from other nations who may also want to break up the union will force their hands to reform for the better. Brussels works for Germany, France & the unelected in Brussels & for little else. It may not feel like it this morning but maybe just maybe last night will ultimately bring a fairer society for more of us.

  15. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on 24TH JUNE 2016 7:45 AM

Lionsroar67 sadly the bureaucrats of Brussels and the PC brigade have combined to push a whole lot of shirefolks to the edge. I have some sympathy but despair that a protest turned into a a time warp step backwards. I have some great friends in Germany , Angela Merkels knee jerk opening everyone’s borders without any discussion was a driver for the brexit. Rightly or wrongly. Europe will need to take a good hard look at itself or risk further disintegration. Question is what will Scotland do about it. Boris will be the next leader of Caledonia. I would rather have Scottish Tories in a Scottish parliament that the eton brigade and that is saying something.

  21. I personally think that the victory of the little Englanders will mark the end of any slim chance of a 2nd Scottish indy referendum. Westminster /the English will simply not allow it now they have an ‘independent UK’. Anyone who believes that they will needs to wake up.

The result is not down to nationalism. It is down to people looking at what they had ten and twenty years ago,and comparing it to where they see things going in ten or twenty years for their kids.

It is down to people being treated like utter shite by the chattering political classes, while seeing their own prospects nosediving.

They find it difficult to see a GP,wait till past the point of death for a hospital appointment. Their kids are laden with debt after university, with little realistic prospect of a rewarding job,and less of a house.

Zero hour contracts are the name of the day, wage cuts are endemic.

It might be the EU or it might be migrants or it might be refugees or it might be Westminster or the English. It’s all nationalism.
