O’Neills’ achievements

888

Delighted for Martin O’Neill on taking Ireland into the last 16 of the Euros. Since his salad days ended at Celtic, Martin’s had more downs than ups as a manager. I felt the game had moved on from him, even during his five years at Celtic, the game tactically moved away from him, but he’s one of a number of managers of small nations who have overachieved.

I’m not buying Roy Keane’s tears, though. Reaching the last 16 of the Euros is a great achievement, but he disparaged Mick McCarthy’s achievement with Ireland in going out of the 2002 World Cup in the last 16 to Spain on penalties.  Maybe it’s time for some humility from Roy.

If anything, Michael O’Neill’s achievements with the north has been even greater. Michael was mentioned as a possible Celtic manager before Brendan’s appointment, but the point was made to me, whatever he achieved in qualifying, he could be embarrassed in all three Euros games. Now he needs to beat Wales for a place in the quarter finals.

The group stages have been a delight. Some big tactical lessons for underdogs, and for teams who face 10 men behind the ball every week. If you don’t make defensive mistakes you can win any game, possession and territorial advantage is a mirage of influence.

Britain slips from 5th largest economy to 6th (behind growth-less France) in the space of five hours

  2. I’m a labour man originally, until the loyalists/RUC tried to burn us to the back of the bus in ’69. I’ve been a trade union rep both for my trade and my teachers (NUFTO/NASUWT). Belfast has become a more colourful place because of immigration, no pun intended. There are a lot of people, however, who do not want uncontrolled emigration. It’s not Racism, rather a lot of people wondering where the money is coming from for all the support systems needed. Scotland seems to be a one topic nation-in or out. Much like the Referendum really. Again, where is the money coming from?

  3. So, who would Brendan drop fom the team to make space for, Joe Allen ?

Is Joe Allen as guid as, Scott Allen ?

Does JA have the mental-capacity to play for the Cellic ?

Does Brendan have the mental-capacity to manage the Cellic ?

    How would we know ?

For many this WAS a vote about Europe, but for as many it was a vote about dispossession amid constant images of largesse and greed. For them we have failed to represent the true costs of policies that ensure that economic recovery is somehow, of necessity, underpinned by a tightening of their belts.

They are the many who have never had a pay rise in a decade. They are the many who have been forced to tighten their belts amid cuts in benefits upon which they depend, and who have suffered a severe reduction in many of the services that we the Metropolitan folk can remedy by purchasing.

Worse there has been a failure to recognise the feelings of these self-same communities who feel they are being “swamped” by immigrants who would work for less, and yet have access to the very services that are already in ever shorter supply. Easy pickings for politicians determined to blame Europe for all Britain’s failings.

If the UK is allowed to end this day thinking that it was only about Europe, we shall never address the true scale of alienation in which we live. This is a wake-up call – calling upon us to reach out to towns like Barnsley in Yorkshire, Boston in Lincolnshire and great tracts of Wales in the west, and many other places and sections of society.

The woeful campaigns by both Leave and Remain have allowed us to blame the ‘other’ without ever looking at ourselves. Race, religion, class and more have all played their part in the most unpleasant domestic political campaign most of us have ever witnessed.

The referendum challenges us to render our democratic institutions more truly representative of and responsive to who we are and the lives we lead.

This must become a day for renewal. Let negotiations with Europe take their course, they will not resolve the crisis at the heart of our own society. A government enjoying 36.9 per cent of a General Election vote has to begin accept that it governs for us all, whatever our condition or our politics.

Dangerous choices lie ahead. We can survive them and prosper if we begin to understand and act upon what this referendum has told us. Act now to reverse the consequences of austerity and cuts. We can only prosper if we all share the burden of bringing us all through to a fairer and more egalitarian future.

  6. What would happen if,……

    Can that happen ?

But hey let’s not let democracy get in the way of your wishes.

  8. Raymac there are heaps of Countries with less than 5.5 million people who are quite capable of running their Ian economy. Ireland and New Zealand where I live are two basic examples. I find it insulting that some people think Scots are not capable enough to run a Country with abundant natural resources. I have much more faith in Scotland’s ability. We are not Westminster beggars.

I’ll disagree with you on Norway for oil and existing Sovereign Wealth Fund reasons.

Their forestry and hydro industries are also better developed. Also fishing. Top ten per capita GDP

Sweden? Again, developed forestry and hydro along with iron ore and engineering, top ten per capita GDP?

Denmark, this is one I’m not so sure of. But I’m sure they’re big in engineering and chemicals manufacturing. AND farming obviously, fisheries. Again near top ten per capita GDP.

I’m not trying to run Scotland down,J. Far from it. Point is that these countries have a long history of investment in their infrastructure and in the welfare and wellbeing of their population.

    And,particularly,in their education.

    WE DO NOT.

Much of that is down to our early reliance on heavy industry, and then to its destruction.

These countries, yes, they are what we should aspire to. But look where they are now. Look where we are now.

To compare us with them is not realistic, mate. They have a start of generations, and they have a start of a mindset.

  11. Kevjungle when Scotland does go independent I fully expect the SNP to lose there majority.

Nega that doesn’t make any sense. Who do our primary producers trade with right now? It will be the same trading partners and the same products. Take it you are in the Scotland depends on English people’s money. That would be sad if it was anywhere close to the truth. I have a lot if belief in Scotland’s workers and people.

  17. Tranagabhoy of course Scotland could run its own country. That was and is never in question. But living in Scotland I see the people who would run Scotland. I see the institutional racism at work.

But never mind what I think. Just two short years ago Scotland gave a very clear decision. Unambiguous. 2 years ago.

Ypu and your il didn’t like that result. So people like you, who want Scotland to run its own affairs, don’t respect the democratic will of the Scottish people.

How can I trust you and your ilk to run a country responsibly and with respect.

  24. Nega if you fear the worst that’s what you will get. Believe in the best and it might surprise you. There are more than a few rotten eggs in any Countries politicians and sure Scotland has a fair share of bam pots but ….but it has a fair share of fair minded people too. Some blue noses helped my brother stand up against a bigoted Masonic moron who almost had him framed up. Yet people who fear these loonies vote in exactly the same way they vote for a union with the Westminster con artists. Boris us no friend of Scotland.

  25. RE-Indy2

Timing will be everything – diving two feet first into the tackle ( Salmond Style) will result in a red card. Sturgeon (more astute and with better political judgement ) will let matters settle and take a measured view. Her considerations will include the form, shape and composition of the EU going forward as other members consider their ‘exit’ options, accepting that our currency would be the Euro (there is no other possibility), recognising that the Euro Central Bank will be the lender of last resort, and generally making the economic case which at present is far from clear.

Cobbling something together, prevaricating on core economic issues, get it over the line then make a fist of things as best we can, will not be acceptable in any Indy2. That – I suspect – is now inevitable but is likely 2/3 years away. Frying pan to fire is a possibility most Scots will wish to exclude and after the anger and emotion of the Brexit vote subsides the intellectual rigour of Indy2 arguments from the SNP will be carefully scrutinised. Assertions, contentions and untested best case scenarios will struggle to persuade the majority in Scotland.

There are increasingly times in my life when I despair for the world. Last night’s Brexit vote was one such occasion.

I do agree that two years is too short a time , however when brexit comes to its conclusion in three more then that 5 years us not an unreasonable time to put democracy back on the menu…or do you disagree ?
