O’Neills’ achievements

888

Delighted for Martin O’Neill on taking Ireland into the last 16 of the Euros. Since his salad days ended at Celtic, Martin’s had more downs than ups as a manager. I felt the game had moved on from him, even during his five years at Celtic, the game tactically moved away from him, but he’s one of a number of managers of small nations who have overachieved.

I’m not buying Roy Keane’s tears, though. Reaching the last 16 of the Euros is a great achievement, but he disparaged Mick McCarthy’s achievement with Ireland in going out of the 2002 World Cup in the last 16 to Spain on penalties.  Maybe it’s time for some humility from Roy.

If anything, Michael O’Neill’s achievements with the north has been even greater. Michael was mentioned as a possible Celtic manager before Brendan’s appointment, but the point was made to me, whatever he achieved in qualifying, he could be embarrassed in all three Euros games. Now he needs to beat Wales for a place in the quarter finals.

The group stages have been a delight. Some big tactical lessons for underdogs, and for teams who face 10 men behind the ball every week. If you don’t make defensive mistakes you can win any game, possession and territorial advantage is a mirage of influence.

As an expat who has lived for many years in Scotland and London as well as various EU countries (mostly those hardest hit by the socio-economic crisis), I find that whenever I return to the UK I am amazed at how ramshackle and neglected the place looks (not including the city centres of London and Edinburgh and a few other wealthier places). The same goes for many of the inhabitants who seem most lost. This neglect has little to do with the EU but a lot to do with how the UK is run from Westminster and the local councils.

Things are clearly going wrong for many people but it’s the same all over the western world. Until we address the huge imbalances that this feral and morally vacuous capitalism has created then we will forever be doomed to lower standards of living for those not of the privileged classes. The automation of many jobs will add further stress to the population. Few are calling for past solutions like 20th century communism but we desperately need informed, rational debate about where the UK, the EU and the rest of the world is heading because right now it’s heading towards the mother of all icebergs. Where are the captains? It seems they are arguing about who gets the best cabin…

Labour MPs Margaret Hodge and Ann Coffey have sent a letter to John Cryer MP, chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party, submitting a motion of no confidence in leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The letter calls for a discussion at the next meeting of the PLP at 18:00 BST on Monday 27 June. This ballot has no formal constitutional force, but would be a significant expression of the lack of confidence of Labour MPs in their leader.

It is up to Mr Cryer to decide whether or not to accept the motion and allow it to be debated.

If it is accepted, it would be followed by a secret ballot of Labour MPs on Tuesday 28th. It would require a simple majority of MPs to support the motion for it to be passed.

I would add to that: And the next step to blaming Foreigners in their country for your problems, is blaming “Foreigners” in your own country.

At a time when we should be moving towards a global citizenship, to tackle global issues, it is sad that religious fanaticism and Nationalism are on the rise, creating an increasingly polarised, fractured and dangerous World.
