Sevco and Gang of 10

895

We are three days away from Rangers creditors’ vote on the proposed CVA and my best sources remain strongly of the view that HMRC will vote against.  As a result, on Thursday, the process to liquidate Rangers will commence and Charles Green’s company, Sevco 5088, will attempt to purchase the assets of the business.

One of the first acts of Sevco 5088 will be to apply for membership to the Scottish Premier League.  They will offer the league an opportunity to retain considerable revenue streams which would be lost to the league following the liquidation of the former football club, Rangers.

Attitudes hardened towards a Newco proposition since Mr Green came onto the scene, specifically since Rangers raised an action against the Scottish FA at the Court of Session, but sentiment in football is fickle.  We should ignore all public comments on the subject of Newco and concentrate our minds on the SPL vote, which will take place next week.

Two months ago the Gang of 10 clubs thought they were in an ‘Arab Spring’ moment when they met to discuss how they would use Rangers demise as an opportunity to re-engineer the league.  Charles Green is aware of their feelings on this matter and is likely to use this knowledge to inform his offer to the league.

Expect Green to offer to support a change in voting rights if the SPL allow Servco a franchise in the SPL.  This offer would allow the Gang of 10 to not only retain much of their existing income streams, they would actually be able to bring in additional income.  Servco FC would benefit from being the first company to be able to buy a place in the top division of Scottish football.  The only loser from this scenario would be Celtic.

The existing voting rights protect Celtic from several hazards.  The most important two are the rights of home teams to retain match ticket revenue and a limit to the number of home games shown live on TV for any club.

You will hear lots of comment from the Gang of 10 that they are not interested in splitting home gate money but none of them have agreed to exclude this matter from the change in voting rights.  More Celtic home games on TV would be welcomed by armchair fans that live abroad but would see season ticket holders suffer as kick off times are moved to accommodate TV scheduling.  Neither of these matters will be addressed at this month’s SPL meeting but, if the voting rights change, you can expect to read about them soon.

If the application from Sevco is rejected, we enter a new world, where SPL voting rights will inevitably change and Scottish clubs will have to learn to cooperate with each other on a constructive basis.  As Celtic fans, we will embrace that challenge, but you can be sure that a slice of your season ticket money is being offered right now by people who have nothing whatsoever to do with Celtic.

When another Scottish club invests more than its entire value to build a decent-sized family stadium-as Celtic did under Fergus-I might have some sympathy for them.

  8. Paul: would you or one of the other posters like to explain why it is wrong to pay a share, a sizeable share, of the gate money to a visiting side? It is what used to be done in healthier times, in the days before the SPL was founded; it is what is done now for cup-ties; it is fair – no opponent, no match, after all. Even on pragmatic grounds it’s a benefit to Celtic in several ways – it improves the competitiveness of the league, it diminishes the power of the television companies, and it would be a far greater burden to bear for Rangers than for ourselves.

I believe-willing to be proven wrong,as ever-that the stand they recently built cost around £5m,so you are probably correct.

I doff my cap to them, they are welcome to a proportionate share of the crowd.

    Sure,they can have their 30%

  10. In order not to bore everyone with my pet subject of a 14 team league, here is an abridged version:

The League: a mid season split (6/8), top 6 play 36 games with even number of h&a games, the lower teams re-start a league for a ‘Premier Plate’,total of 40 games, relegation play-offs.

Money 1: any team get to group stages of CL takes only 25% of domestic prize money/media income; any team gets to EL group stages limits domestic take to 75%. Funds re-distributed on a league position basis.

Money 2: share of home gates set at a nominal sum (2%) to aid cash-flow for member clubs.

There is more but I’ve posted the idea before tho not for a while so I’ll leave it at that. Still believe in it!

Agree with the 14 team league proposal- on perception alone outsiders look at our league and think its crap because there are so few teams- yet can look at League 2 in England and see 24 teams and assume anything that goes on there must be better than our product!

If they can have 24 teams in their 4th tier we surely can have 14 in our top tier. It will prevent a staleness and remove the fear factor of blooding youngsters for a number of teams.

Its worth experimenting with at least.

I suggested Easter Road only because, as far as I know, they planed, time-tabled and delivered it from their own resources. Or at least they funded it and managed it themselves.

Can’t see the relevance (I’m porbably missing something) of the size of the stadium since they have built in a premium of around 9,000 spectators over and above their average attendance. Would have thought they were doing a bit more than their bit for a club never to be the size of ours.

  22. Bobby Murdoch

I do not know about altruism per se, but Auld Heid is correct that there is an innate interdependence in any kind of sporting league. Not always a fair one mind you. Back in the day when the attendance money was shared, there were relatively few season ticket holders, indeed I think Celtic had only six thousand or so in the first part of the 1970s, all sitting in a new stand which held 9,500. Away teams, coming to Celtic Park once a season brought more supporters than they do now, and occasional Cup games could see crowds bigger than your average league game. Celtic’s approach to sharing was to publish gate figures which underestimated the actual size of the crowd, and deduct the stand from the total, but they still gave a cheque to their opponents, albeit not a blank one. If Auldheid’s broadcast ideas, or anything similar comes to pass, it would be both possible and practical for Celtic to give our opponents say 10% of that income, but none of the actual gate money. We, in turn would not expect anything from our away games, games which if played on a traditional Saturday afternoon, with some local midweek matches, with a sensible allocation policy would be worth a substantial amount to our opponents. In theory at least. The SPL model is not for me, too Old Firm centric. Saturday evening European game at Parkhead anyone?

  24. if these other 10 teams get a cut of gate money at celtic . why should we pay 500 + for a season ticket when these other poor excuses for football teams dont pay anywhere near that ? its disgusting

In this one,I believe the iron fist is the answer,we have the upper hand.

The other clubs have been perfectly well aware of how we have been treated for years-they did NOTHING to help us.

They need brought to heel. They thought Rangers were bigger and more important than Celtic.

    They were wrong!

Now they seem to think that even collectively they are bigger than Celtic?

To be subsidised by Celtic fans!

  26. lochgoilhead bhoy on

I’ve said this before but I’ll repeat. I believe in the days before home teams kept the gate receipts, season tickets were excluded from the “share”. We could go back to that position.

The money paid at the gate or for non-season tickets could be shared.

  27. The Euros have been an eyeopener. Especially the stadiums. The one in Krakow which hosted the opening event was spectacular. Zybesek will be better placed to give accurate details, however my understanding is that Wisla have an average attendance of 15,000 and an annual budget of €12 million.

how on earth do they produce stadiums of this quality, and if its publicly funded then what on earth are we playing at in Scotland

Agree with 14 team league. The reduction in domestic money for teams who qualify for CL/EL group stages is interesting and would at least be worth discussione, absolutely no to any percentage of home gate going to away club.
