2:35 am. That’s what time it will be in Astana, and in Astana FC’s players’ body clocks, at full time tomorrow night. Whereas Celtic will play the away tie during our afternoon, Astana will fight their natural instinct to be asleep, which will be a clear advantage for Celtic.

They conceded two goals at Celtic Park last year, in added at the end of each half. We should expect them to tire during similar periods this time, particularly so as full time approaches. If the tie remains tight late on, we should re-energise for a final push against what should be increasingly disorientated opponents.

Marin Tomasov joined Astana last month. He earned two assists in his last game, takes set-pieces and can shoot from distance.

Their other attacking dangers are Twumasi and Kabananga. Both are fast wing-players, who will attempt to press Celtic as high up the field as possible, and will break forward at every opportunity

Astana’s key concern is in goal. They have two keepers vying for the no. 1 spot, neither good enough to make it his own. Nenad Eric is likely to get the nod against Celtic. He is weak in the air and noted to spill shots. There should be scraps for Leigh to feed from.

Defensively, they rely more on numbers than aptitude. While Twumasi gets forward quickly, he isn’t known for getting back to do the hard work. Kieran Tierney and Scott Sinclair should be able to exploit this down Celtic’s left.

Make no mistake, this is a tie Celtic should win, but Astana will be more difficult opponents than anyone we will meet domestically this season. We have a big night ahead tomorrow – the most important game Celtic Park will host this season.

    SEAN THORNTON

Long enough,he would never have considered such behaviour if he hadn’t signed for us.

    Obvious,innit?

  2. I seem to have more influence at BBC Shortbread than I realised!

Following my posts earlier today pointing out the glaring absence of Celtic-related stories on their ‘Glasgow & West’ news tab, first a negative story appeared (hoping that KT will move south) and now, at long last, an item about the up-and-coming CL tie.

Does anyone have other news items they’d like me to request … ?

Yes, I would like more reports on why there are never any ham stock cubes in Asda. It’s a serious issue as we rapidly approach soup season.

    Many thanks in advance…

  4. I still think we are taking an un necessary gamble with CL qualification.

We have know for months that Kolo would be leaving, align that with Brendan not fancying Erik, that is only my opinion, Jozo having a dodgy ish injury history and Brendan himself stating prior to the last window that he wanted another CB, now with two CB’s out injured, it’s a hell of a gamble IMO.

If it pays off, well and good, if it doesn’t.

Brendan isn’t here to win the spl or a scottish cup, he is here for europe, I would like to think that the suits are 100% backing him, if they are not.

Not wetting my knickers, just looking at things from a devil’s advocate angle.

  5. What is the Stars on

Celtic will qualify and Jonny Hayes will score ( maybe in both legs and hopefully while filling in at left back)

You still up for a trip to Lisbon again about June?

  8. BMCUWP,

Hi mate, there is a vicious rumour that you are heading to Glasgow in November ?

If so, remember and contact me so we can meet up for pletyofdrink.com.

    HH mate

  9. Is it just me that thinks that there is a little pessimism creeping in about tomorrow night? All this talk about not buying suggests that the manager or the club are doing little to find the players required. Have Celtic been in the habit of naming players or stating that they are about to buy someone tomorrow or whenever?

Secondly the market out there especially in EPL is absolutely crazy. We have better young players than some of the players being banded around for millions of pounds. At this time, I will put my trust in Brendan.

  10. Had a wee blether with a mate who is an infrequent poster on here but knows a man who knows a man.

He is reliably informed that –

    a) Paddy wants to come back.

    b) Celtic have asked Citeh to name their price for a loan or sale deal.

    c) Citeh are playing hardball.

This is PHILBHOY for News at 10…….Linlithgow.

  11. Cultsbhoy says Hail Hail to Hector and Brendan on

Increasing share price at Celtic…is this a reflection that the club could be £30m+ more valuable after tomorrow?

Or is a longer term speculation that the club worth will grow by circa £30m most years as they have no domestic challenge to access European competition?

One of my happiest thoughts is that many Huns will live if they are lucky to see their grandchildren support Celtic.

I base this on the changing dynamic of football as globalisation takes a stronger and stronger grip. If as outlined above we continue to distance ourselves financially from all other domestic competition at the rate we have been doing..in 5 years time we will literally be £100ms richer than any other club in Scotland. Currently Id guess we are about £60m richer…Glasgow will become a one European team City, indeed Scotland will be a one European team country.

Other clubs will be like a Tranmere to our Liverpool….we may still be outnumbered by Man utd/City tops but the only cedible Scottish team shirt will be the Hoops.

  12. I am as usual optimistic about the Astanta game at Celtic Park. In fact the bookies appear to agree as my online bookie bet365 has Celtic odds on @ 2/5.

Bookies dont call it too wrong often ?

Those short odds are no use to me, usually but I will be betting correct score etc.

    CONNAIRE12 on 15TH AUGUST 2017 2:32 PM

Agree re price and qualityity of player in EPL…

There must be a law of diminishing return over a certain price. This diminishing margin can be bridged by a good coach. Hence BR must be retained at all costs imo.

We have the CL USP….that is something only a handful of EPL teams can offer. That will keep us in the transfer game both buying and selling.

  21. You know me Bobby!

Didnt stop me drinking until midnight on Friday though………very rough on Sat and Sunday….stayed in the hoose feeling sorry for massel……whilst putting all the blame on BLantyre Tim.?
