4 at the back, Shane, Neil and Gordon

We got a fascinating insight into the complex layers of management through comments before, during and after the game from Gordon Strachan, and post-match from Neil Lennon.  Before kick-off, Gordon was asked about Neil’s decision to play three at the back, a formation that was exploited at the weekend (and praised by me last month).

Our former boss, once manager to Neil Lennon, father of Gavin, now a Celtic first team coach, deflected.  “I’m not the manager.”  Gordon was there as a pundit, but pulled his punch on this occasion and again at halftime.  After the second half, when Celtic improved significantly with four at the back, Gordon declined to judge the starting formation harshly, postulating that we will never know what would have happened had Celtic started with four at the back.

Then Neil Lennon explained what Gordon Strachan almost certainly knew before the match.  His choice was not to start with three at the back, but he did not have fit personnel to start and play the majority of a game with four in defence, specifically, a wide right forward.  Ryan Christie was not allowed to leave his home for two weeks, at this level, that is a long time without training.

A few weeks ago, we discussed that it was absurd that tens of thousands of Celtic fans knew something to be an absolute truth, which Neil Lennon was oblivious to (think central mid).  We agreed (I’m sure we did) that this is nonsense.  Instead, we had to accept that the manager sees complex layers that we do not.  Who knew there were concerns about the match fitness of Ryan Christie, apart from Gordon Strachan, of course?

It will be four at the back whenever fitness permits.  The two central defenders will be Kristoffer Ajer (who was immense last night) and Christopher Jullien.  Shane Duffy is struggling.  At 28, there is plenty of fuel in the tank, so he may find form, but right now he looks like a player on the bus out of Brighton.  Some you win.

In football, or in life generally, the direction of travel is often more important that your absolute position.  Are things getting better, or are they getting worse?  Therein lies whatever consolation there was in defeat to a superior Milan last night.  It was still a defeat, but losing to a better team while competing for large periods of the game, is better than being schooled by a team of never-won-anythings.

We did no more to Milan than Motherwell will do to us next month, but that direction of travel offers some consolation ahead of Sunday.

  1. Good morning Mick – I’m with you all the squabbling infighting and petty pish can take a back seat, let’s get behind the bhoys.

3 – to the Leather Belts.

Today is the day we play down a marker.

As someone says there is a whole industry wanting us to fail that alone should inspire every single player in that dressing room when they pull on that magical Jersey.

COYBIG bloods starting to pump already.

    D :)

  2. I still cannot believe there is nothing being said about the Huns game on Thursday where Standard players tested possitive after the game.

WTF is happening here with track and trace

There should be an uproar about this.

    D :)

  3. Melbourne Mick on

No good news from our premier today, a small spike in infections

with people doing the wrong thing, and according to the media

    a language miscommunication?

But the area is being blitzed, tracking, tracing, testing going on now

and fingers crossed we get our good news Tues.

It’s up to the Bhoys tonight to cheer us up.

    3-1 that’ll do me David.

    H.H. Mick

DAVID66…There is a very simple explanation why it appears that NO Huns have caught Covid…

    ZOMBIES cant catch it !

    Morning Michael…

I hope you all get good news on Tuesday.

I hope PADDY is okay ?

  6. What bothers me for today is if Broonie starts again and we go back to slow motion football. It cannot be ignored the difference in speed when personnel changed against ACM. We that pace of play we are a very decent unit and we must play at that level from the start of every game. None of this slow start feeling our way in – start with pace, intensity and loads of movement in the forward areas – teams won’t know what’s hit them, who to mark or why that are 2 down after 20 mins- come on Celtic.

  7. JINKYREDSTAR on 24TH OCTOBER 2020 6:36 PM

Jimmy – leaking and Googling dancers – you must be feeling better mate 😀

I would be happy to “Goggle” some Female dancers every day.

OOPS…Ive just read back a little and it seems that a couple of Posters have beaten me to it with my ” ZOMBIES” Theory !

  8. Melbourne Mick on

Paddymac still needs a bit of hospital work but this Covid shit

is hindering his recovery, but as usual he’s beavering away

    organising our next CSC day.

Hope you get sorted soon as well, and of course your wee dog.

Good victory tonight will set a marker down that we’re not

giving up the ten without a fight.

    H.H. Mick

    Big Jimmy

You are mixing up your Liz Brewers

The one who does etiquette and parties is English

The one in the video became Liz Derringer ; the lead singer in the video being the future husband

She was a rock magazine writer and groupie

You mean there are TWO Liz Brewers ? LOL

Over the years Ive managed to mix up certain Girls and back in the 1980’s while working in a Glasgow Disco, I was “Dating” TWO Barmaids at the same time for a little while.

Both worked in separate Bars in that Disco.

One was called ” Emily”…the other was called ” Evelyn”…..I cant begin to tell you the number of times I called them by the WRONG Name whenever I was with one of them !

I could get confused even back in the 1980’s !

I will try an check out Liz Brewer the dancer as soon as I can.

The “other” Liz Brewer who was English etc, is the one who is being interviewed on video, and prior to becoming a “Promoter/Organiser etc”, she claims that she was a “PARTY GIRL”….so I had assumed that Liz Brewer ( The Dancer) was the same Girl on video interview ?

  10. The tax relief on PPE,which was waived, goes back on tomorrow, they really have no shame this mob.

  11. MELBOURNE MICK on 25TH OCTOBER 2020 7:25 AM

Cheers Mick, plz give PADDYMAC my best wishes.

I would hope that ALL the Celtic players are very angry in relation to recent results and performances although we played no bad against Milan at times.

Mon Celtic …we want a great result and performance Today…although I would settle for a 1-0 to the good guys.

  12. See Kevin’s has joined in the feeding frenzy this morning.”The Huns are better in every department “guff.Would that be our present 11,or when we get our 8 players back playing.I can understand the Hun media, but people like Kevin’s should recieve a slap in the coupon every ti me a Tim passes him.

    Soup taking little nonentity.

  13. A few years ago in my previous local Pub, I was chatting to a young Hun that I knew.

He proudly showed me his Tattoos of King Billy and “Rankers etc….

As my eyes burned I said to him….” I’ll bet they feckers cost you an Arm and a Leg” ?

    He wasnt amused lol !

Others at the Bar WERE amused LOL.

  14. TURKEYBHOY on 25TH OCTOBER 2020 7:53 AM

I also saw Keevins “Headline”, but as usual I dint bother reading it.

Him and many others are best ignored.

  15. Listen guys I am the biggest moaner out. Stop shouting we know David66.

I always want the best for our club and any player that pulls on that famous jersey but my patience does wear thin now and again. As one thing I cannot stand is 11 players on the park not playing with Heart and Passion after all they must have the talent that we all never had.

So that is all I ask for a bit of heart, passion and more feckin shots at goal.

It really isnae rocket science if you do not get the ball between those big white sticks you cannot score.

All that said if we can get our act together starting today, go on a wee winning run and win our game/games in hand then the season really isn’t beyond us and can start today.

    Come on the hoops

    Rant over

    D :)

Ive just spotted a claim thru Googling Liz Brewer that The McCoys song ” Hang on Sloopy” was released in 1965 ( which I already knew) however, the Video on Youtube was made in 1976 !

I have often wondered how such a sexy video ( Liz the Braless Dancer) was allowed back in 1965, but the Hair styles of the Band and Singer Rick Derringer were certainly NOT from 1965…they do however look like hair styles from 1976…I should know as I had the same hair style as Rick back then !

Now I need to find out WHY the video was only made in 1976 ?

Although, something is telling me that the SONG was RE Released in 1976…hence the video being made THAT year ?

It was certainly far too Raunchy for 1965.

  17. Big jimmy – a few years ago in my local pub I apologised for calling a hun by the wrong name, say Paul instead of Billy😜

He proceeded to go on about how good sevco were blah, blah, blah.. I stopped him in his tracks and said Billy I have never and never will talk to you about football…now fuck off.

I wonder why he doesn’t even say hello now. 👍 result

    D :)

  18. DAVID66…

Ive NEVER known you to be a moaner….Yer a “DOER” !

Tam Rogic is just over 9/4 to score at ANY time Today ( Odds of 12/5 on Bet365)….I might have look at the odds for Tam to score at least TWO Goals ?

  19. DAVID66 on 25TH OCTOBER 2020 8:13 AM

I think that should read…” He doesnt even say Hello, Hello” now ?

    HH Mate.

  20. Match day is here. Only few hours til kick off

No more negativity or moans from me.

    3 points please

We can sweat the big picture stuff another day.

Aberdeen are not a bad outfit. I suspect we will be involving subs to win it today.

  21. DAVID66…

I can clearly remember being in a Pub in Dennistoun after a Celtic game at Celtic Park with some mates. In came 5 or 6 Hun fans and sat opposite.

We then got involved in a bit of discussion with THEM and the Huns had just signed Colin MacAdam for around £30,000 from Partick Thistle.

I asked these Huns…” IF PELE claimed that he wanted to play for The Rankers for FREE, with NO Transfer Fee involved etc…and you also had the chance to sign Colin MacAdam….who would you sign ” /

EVERY one of those Huns said…” Colin MacAdam” ”

Their “Reasoning” was that PELE was not just a Black man…but also a Catholic !

My mates and I just fell about laughing at them.

Those Huns and many others are beyond educating.

  22. If I were Derek McInness having watched Celtic on Thursday, I would be worried…..oh so worried.

He will have heard criticism on the airwaves ever since last Saturday, he will have seen the defence at times on Thursday resemble an ill prepared King Canute and he will have detected a bit of polluted bile spreading within Celtic’s own camp.

But if he is as astute as a real expert (like me ….) then he will also have seen the Cnut (that tit’s real name) and the tidal roles reversed as Celtic’s overlapping full-backs, penetrating Ajer thrusts, midfield triangles of magic and one twos, one threes, two threes, one threes and one two threes of wave after wave left world class defenders bamboozled, confused and flailing in the wake of hooped skill, speed, talent and imagination beyond the realms of the human psyche.

    He will be rightly worried.

    That’s what I think anyway.

  23. Good morning, friends from a damp and breezy East Kilbride. Positivity, positivity, positivity. And just 3 more hours till we get to see The Champions play. HH

  24. I am certain it is better not to even mention the anti-Celtic `journalists` on CQN.

Oxygen of publicity and all that.

  25. In Wales, a lightbulb is non essential, but a bottle of vodka is….🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

  26. Hope Ghuys who were slaughtering Shane Duffy, read what Lenny had to say about him.

I had heard that he had an abscess & two teeth removed before the Hun game and said he wasn’t fit to play but with Bitton, Julian & Elhamed out he was needed & agreed to play.

Didn’t want to say it here as I had no proof.

Anyhow I hope he does well today & more importantly hope it’s 3 points for the Celts.
