Aberdeen 1-1 Celtic

1425

It was an unfamiliar Celtic starting line-up at Pittodrie this afternoon which resulted in the visitors dropping league points for the first time in four months.  Andre Blackman and Mikael Lustig made their Celtic debuts at left and right back respectively, while Charlie Mulgrew played central midfield alongside Joe Ledley.

Neither full back got forward as often as we are accustomed to see Celtic play, which perhaps contributed to the disjointed performance.

Charlie Mulgrew almost opened the scoring on 5 minutes when his swerving free kick rebounded back off the inside of Jason Brown’s far post in Celtic’s only genuine chance before the 28th minute goal.  Mulgrew was key again in the move that counted, controlling a difficult ball before twisting his marker and knocking the ball forward to Kris Commons.  Commons spun before playing a perfectly weighted pass into space inside the box for Anthony Stokes to run onto.  Stokes first touch took the ball past Brown in the Aberdeen goal before he slotted his shot into the net.

Aberdeen were well out of the contest in the first half and had to wait until near the end of the half before they managed an attempt at goal, a Fyvie shot which was blocked.  Then, only seconds from the break, a long ball forward to Fallon brought Aberdeen level.  Fallon turned and his forward run drew Blackman, Wilson and Rogne, leaving the right back space unattended.  Gavin Rae ran 70 yards to fill that space and fired a shot which was going narrowly wide before Blackman’s block bounced over Forster into the net.

A minute into the second half Ryan Jack almost reached a cross from the right as Aberdeen seemed to take encouragement from their goal.

Anthony Stokes looked Celtic’s best player but whenever he linked with strike partner, Gary Hooper, the ball invariably bounced out of play or to an Aberdeen player, most notably on the 55th minute when Hooper failed to control on the edge of the six yard box.

Aberdeen’s best chance to win the game arrived on 63 minutes when Meganson evaded Lustig but shot wide when clean through inside the box.

Looks like rangers need to go to Dundee United and win in two weeks to stop us winning the title at ibrox.

Have Celtic not signed a Polish centre back on a pre contract? Has Rogne not grown into the position? Is this not now Mulgrew’s best position? I agree that we need one more CB but I think we are looking decent there.

The start of the European run was pretty poor but, from what i saw, the last few games were pretty decent with wins against Rennes, playing well against Udinese etc

Kelvin never managed to win a header in the English Championship for three years?

A combination of absurdity and hyperbole. Did you actually watch him play in the championship for three years consistently? Do they even screen the championship out there?

    Exactly my thoughts

There’s a perverse pathology within them that makes me think they’ll tip into liquidation rather than face us. It will be written as if the mighty, proud warrior has finally, age-withered, fallen on his own sword. Riven through with and by dignity…

forest offered kelvin wilson a new improved 3 year deal(he must have been really guff for them then)

when he refused deal wee slimy davies didnt pick him nor sell him to us last january(ps were is wee slimy now)

i can only judge players on what i see and everytime i have watched wilson he has strolled through games good pace good positioning good defending

thought today both him and rogne were upset at playing with new fullbacks

so in conclusion i would say imho wilson and rogne look like best c/b partnership for quite a while

  11. I dont want huns deducted 60 points until after game at Celtic park or we wont get a chance to hump them. :>)

  12. Am I right in thinking that Nevin was watching the game in Govan and that he never outed those singers of sectarian hatred as he took it upon himself to do whenever and wherever he found it? Little nyaff. He goes from bad to worse.

My preference is pump them at the bigot dome to leave us on the threshold and then the worlds biggest jelly and ice cream party 12.45 Sunday 1st April at paradise!

Tonight I will forego the jelly and have a good pint or three instead, it’s soooooooo great to be a Tim :-)

We can only win the title at the Brox if Rangers slip up again against Dundee United and Motherwell fail to beat Aberdeen.

That’s the weekend of St Patrick’s Day, when we have the league cup final on the Sunday. So we can’t win the title before we go to Ibrox, but we can win it by beating them at Ibrox if results go our way on St Patrick’s Day.

If results don’t go our way before Ibrox, we have further chances. Winning the game against Rangers will leave us needing one more point to leave them out of it. The day before, Motherwell are away to Kilmarnock and will need to keep winning. The day before we play St Johnstone, Rangers and Motherwell play each other at Fir Park. They can’t both win.

It could be that we need Rangers to get a result that day to set up the title party on April 1 at Celtic Park.

    Come on Rangers.

    You know it makes sense.

But back to us. Let’s improve our team

By selectively bagging the members of said “team”? Your negativity seems to be premised on Neil Lennon having to accept your unsolicited advice when you deign to offer it, i.e. not when he is on a winning run.

“This just in ST…… Lenny cannae hear yer moanin voice from deep in outer South Western Sydney.”

Not possible. He promised on live TV that he was not going to shy away from naming and shaming, exposing the bigots wherever he found them. I suspect he is simply waiting for his superman style ‘Anti_sectarian Man’ outfit to arrive from Ebay and then he’ll be right on to it.

  20. Gscbhoy. I am a manager If you have poor quality that has shown the same performance for 4 to 5 years , it is indeed hard to improve that performance in the lean ways unless you change that personal

I played left back, tried my best, but I was just not good enough , and if I continued in my position , my whole team would be let down

Gcsbhoy I have have done lean for 20 years in Scotland, USA , Germany and Australia, I know when to remove a weak link

Sorry for butting in m8…but, I think If Rogne had to get injured(heaven forbid) then, we could be really exposed.

Why couldn’t we have put down say, 500k and got the new guy on board ?

I know whats going on across the road but, it seems to me that we try to cut things too tight and, we’ve been caught out by this over the previous three years! IMO!

Thankfully, it looks like we have a better chance of getting away with it tis year. But then again, we’ve got two very tricky cup ties coming up where, anything could happen.

Lets hope this is the year that, the fates will look kindly on us.

    Hail! Hail!

  25. ..on the 60 point deduction thing..

If true- that’s it Rangers are finished. Many people- myself included- already think that liquidation is inevitable.

    This makes it inevitableR!

With a depleted squad already that is relegation. There is no way they can afford that.

  26. How ironic if they are deducted 60 points. Wonder if they will still turn up to give relegation rivals dunfermline a financial boost against St Mirren??

BTW – how is that little arrangement going to be policed? three sets of supporters watching two teams? And one of those sets of supporters are Rangers fans? Provoked by telly’s breaking or players making the sign of the cross. Or green straws, or pepperami’s or green chemists signs, traffic lights, Asda livery, and presumably their own teeth………

  29. A surprise team line up from Neil Lennon due to rests, knocks, and International trips saw a debut for Lustig and Blackman, in a forgettable drawn game at Pittodrie.

Both looked fairly comfortable until Andre was perhaps over eager, trying to block a fluffed shot, which spun over the head of Forster to give Aberdeen new heart, and dig in for a draw which after Anthony Stokes superb opener, looked highly unlikely.

The most noticeable thing for me, was the absence of Scott Brown’s drive and determination in the midfield and although Kris Commons set up Stokes’s goal with the proverbial slide rule pass he didn’t play well, and neither did Hooper or Forrest.

Perfectly understandable after such a magnificent title swinging long winning run, Celtic will look back on the Aberdeen match as a worthy point. Victor Wanyama and Cha Du Ri arrived for the tiring debutants, along with McGeouch, Celts failed to ignite, but Aberdeen deserved their point and Celtic ended the game with an away point unaware they’d gained more ground in the race for Jelly and Ice Cream.
