Aberdeen 1-1 Celtic

1425

It was an unfamiliar Celtic starting line-up at Pittodrie this afternoon which resulted in the visitors dropping league points for the first time in four months.  Andre Blackman and Mikael Lustig made their Celtic debuts at left and right back respectively, while Charlie Mulgrew played central midfield alongside Joe Ledley.

Neither full back got forward as often as we are accustomed to see Celtic play, which perhaps contributed to the disjointed performance.

Charlie Mulgrew almost opened the scoring on 5 minutes when his swerving free kick rebounded back off the inside of Jason Brown’s far post in Celtic’s only genuine chance before the 28th minute goal.  Mulgrew was key again in the move that counted, controlling a difficult ball before twisting his marker and knocking the ball forward to Kris Commons.  Commons spun before playing a perfectly weighted pass into space inside the box for Anthony Stokes to run onto.  Stokes first touch took the ball past Brown in the Aberdeen goal before he slotted his shot into the net.

Aberdeen were well out of the contest in the first half and had to wait until near the end of the half before they managed an attempt at goal, a Fyvie shot which was blocked.  Then, only seconds from the break, a long ball forward to Fallon brought Aberdeen level.  Fallon turned and his forward run drew Blackman, Wilson and Rogne, leaving the right back space unattended.  Gavin Rae ran 70 yards to fill that space and fired a shot which was going narrowly wide before Blackman’s block bounced over Forster into the net.

A minute into the second half Ryan Jack almost reached a cross from the right as Aberdeen seemed to take encouragement from their goal.

Anthony Stokes looked Celtic’s best player but whenever he linked with strike partner, Gary Hooper, the ball invariably bounced out of play or to an Aberdeen player, most notably on the 55th minute when Hooper failed to control on the edge of the six yard box.

Aberdeen’s best chance to win the game arrived on 63 minutes when Meganson evaded Lustig but shot wide when clean through inside the box.

Fr Murphy was in tonight. I have not felt too bad today, although I notice the energy beginning to drain. But it is quite early yet. I got showered today and had my hair cut, which made me feel quite good. Ten years younger, the boys joke, but I feel twenty years older, the inevitable consequence of eight years of torture and imprisonment.

I am abreast with the news and view with utter disgust and anger the Reagan/Thatcher plot. It seems quite clear that they intend to counteract Russian expansionism with imperialist expansionism, to protect their vital interests they say.

What they mean is they covet other nations’ resources. They want to steal what they haven’t got and to do so (as the future may unfortunately prove) they will murder oppressed people and deny them their sovereignty as nations. No doubt Mr Haughey will toe the line in Ireland when Thatcher so demands.

Noticed a rarity today: jam with the tea, and by the way the Screws are glaring at the food. They seem more in need of it than my good self.

Even if we drop points v. DU and then lose at Ibrox, if Motherwell win their 2 games, wouldn’t that block clinching it? Motherwell would be in 2nd place, not us. It would be us being mathematically eliminated from winning it, but it wouldn’t clinch it for the scum. Not that it’s much consolation.

  11. The Honest Cover-up on

    tomcourtney on 3 March, 2012 at 23:51

Well said. I think a lot of Celtic supporters are sometimes harsh in their criticism of pundits like Walker and Provan, but Burley is something else. It’s not just the anti-Celtic nature of his rants. A couple of weeks ago Ian Crocker made a comment about Bocanegra having 100+ caps for USA. Burley snidely snapped back “yeah, like that counts for a lot!” Crocker sounded quite taken aback and pointed out that the USA actually have a much higher ranking than Scotland.

They are ranked 31 in FIFA world rankings. They have a squad full of quality players playing in England, Germany, Holland and Germany. Bocanegra is no world beater but he is a seasoned international who deserves more respect than that from a clown like Burley. And this guy is meant to be selling the product he is commentating on!

He is an utter bore and an ignoramus. Rumours about him being drunk during commentating would not surprise me given the nonsense he comes out with.

He actually reminds me of the loudmouth “Billy no mates” drunk propped up at the bar shouting out random crap, bumping into people and threatening folk after spilling their drinks.

Like you say, I too actually had to mute the volume. If there had been radio coverage of the game I would have listened to that while watching the TV. Absurd considering we are paying £9 a month for essentially a Celtic game every few weeks.

    Sent my complaint;

I have been a subscriber to ESPN for the last 2 years. I use to channel to watch coverage of Scottish football.

I will have to cancel my subscription, however, if I hear Craig Burley is commentating on another Celtic game.

Instead of providing expert opinion during the game, he consistently indulges in inane chat about non footballing issues, makes snide and sarcastic comments about players/teams and rambles on about his petty grudges while important on field action is taking place. His colleagues sound utterly exasperated by his pathetic behaviour and I have actually had to resort to switching the volume to mute while watching the game. A ridiculous state of affairs for my £9 a month fee. Every supporter I speak to shares these views. Indeed, Neil Lennon the Celtic manager, described him as “disrespectful” and someone who “devalues the game”. Rather than court controversy to fuel debate, he is genuinely upsetting supporters who will cancel their subscription if he is not replaced.

  12. Just a wee thought but for the ipox game could we not show a little respect for the vermins situation and all 7000 patriots (God Bless Them) wear white shirts and black ties before kick off as a mark of respect. I understand many would like to be seen to be bedecked in green and white going to the hunnery but you could wear the shirt and tie over the blessed hoops a d take it off as the game starts. Only a thought

BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS Well you’re a right wee pedant aren’t you? If you are so particular about monikers and suffixes why didn’t you mention that the addition of the UFB was for a very short period and in relation to a matter pertaining to the demonization of Irish Republicans and the SNPs ‘ even up the score law’.

What has my not saying that neither Catholic hymns nor indeed Irish Nationalist songs should be heard at CP had to do with this? It seems I have upset the old rosary bead rattlers somewhat

I stand by my comments. There was no mention of why OGLACH used then dropped the suffix UFB,I merely commented on it.

IMO,the use of that term would be likely to imply that offence is likely to be taken if anyone were to use other terms like bead rattlers, tattie munchers, etc.

McCourt is a Celtic man, seriously. He has a stake in a pub in Belfast,The Rock Bar.It’s one of the oldest,a real bar,ya know? Marble floors, all mahogany, wee snugs…years and years old, beautiful pints of double. It’s a listed building, the outside is like those old Glasgow buildings, sandstone,I think?

Anyway, the bar is on the Falls Road, and even before Paddy had a say in it…there was only ever two soccer teams represented in the bar,Glasgow Celtic, and Belfast Celtic.Horse racing comes first, obviously…well either that,or Charlie Tully!!

Well to cut a long story short,a few month ago,I was outside The Rock, waiting on a black hack into town. This was was the day when the Record “broke” the news about der hun, after tea time, about 5 in the afternoon – the sun was setting, blowing a gale, dark clouds in the sky.But they have this beautiful bar, some sort of emerald green light, like a strobe, like neon, only green – lighting up the face of the building – with six, maybe seven flag poles,on on them were six or seven brand new flags, all flying fiercely in the wind.Maybe two Eire Go Bragh ones, the others were Irish tri-colours,with the Celtic crest boldly emblazoned in the middle of them.

It is a beautiful sight – but what struck me most about it was this – it is right in the Celtic heartland, nothing to do with der hun, just a statement – we don’t worry about them,it’s all about Celtic – WE ARE THE CELTIC.
