Admin less likely in short term

Robbed of the ability to accept credit cards, or roll-over Standing Order fans’ payments, by all accounts season ticket renewals at Newco Rangers has been considerably less than those of fellow lower league club Hearts.

Notwithstanding all of this, the Ibrox club’s remarkable PR people this morning published an article titled “Season ticket waiting list”!  Waiting list!!  Every word is priceless.

I’ve long maintained that anyone looking for a strategy in any of this was misguided but one thing you can be sure of, the lawyers will be giving advice on when to flush the club down the lavvy (ven.).

Newco have banked season ticket cash from a few thousand people, giving them a liability to stage football games until May next year.  If they are unable to stage those games, they cannot spend, or continue to accept, that money.  None of this was relevant before deadline day, but the extended deadline passed yesterday, so the club now have their primary indicator of how much income they will receive this financial year.

If the board believe they do not have enough income to finish the season, they must stop spending – and accepting – season ticket money, and ask the court to appoint an administrator.  Despite the apparent inevitability of this, the board can roll the dice for a while yet.

They can reasonably claim to have an expectation thousands of more tickets will go before the season starts, or that the club can embark on another share issue, but in the meantime, they must continue to pay wages and other costs.  Cash is king when you don’t have bank support and hundreds of staff will continue to earn wages over the summer months.

Wages and other costs will need to be met for May, June and July, before Newco’s biggest vat bill of the year becomes payable in the first week in August.  Ticket sales would need to pick up incredibly in the coming weeks to see them through this.

I don’t expect administration this week.  The club has cash in the bank, has a theoretical chance of turning things around and, as far as we know, is meeting all liabilities when due.  The more likely time administrators would be required is when creditors cannot be paid on time.

There’s an interesting media angle on all of this. Graham Wallace is a hired professional, there to deliver a future for a football club in distress, no more and no less. Sections of the media compliant with ‘the rebels’ (cough) are now telling readers he has made several sackable offences.

It suits King & co if anyone with a modicum of competence to leaves the premises. This campaign is brutal, but remember, don’t go looking for a coherent strategy, there isn’t one.

Speaking to season ticket renewals

Saturday’s magnificent Scottish Cup Final had a fitting home at Celtic Park but the Celtic show only rolls on if you, me and tens of thousands of our close friends want Celtic succeed as much as Newco’s fans want their club to fail, by buying our season ticket.

The most important ticket deadline in football is THIS FRIDAY, 23rd May.  Be there, or be less shamrock shaped.  When it comes to supporters, faithfulness trumps loyalty any day.

After watching St Johnstone win the Scottish Cup, in what was a genuinely thrilling final on Saturday, you could not come to any other conclusion that this was a fantastic season for Scottish football.  Celtic were irresistible in the league, Aberdeen and Dundee United resurged, Motherwell were again Best of the Rest, which is not quit the league title it could be, but still an achievement.  I’m loving the game this way.

Congratulations to Atletico Madrid for achieving what seemed impossible only a few months ago.  Congratulations also to Barcelona fans, who applauded the league winners in recognition of that achievement.  There are some good guys in the game.

You’re probably correct but last year was a blur to me.

Of course we have concerns over who we’ll face but equally few clubs will be happy to be drawn against us.

This is their last 5 years co-efficient, reading left to right

They got 3.357 pts for 2013-14 on basis of English national co-efficient. No doubt Ryecatcher can explain what they did to get the bigger numbers.

Liverpool straight in as EPL #2.

Bert Kassies site suggests that the top team in Pot 4 will be Anderlecht ranked 50.260, so Liverpool a comfortable pot 3 team.

After this season they will be losing the good year where they scored 24.5856 so they need to score that this coming season to stand still as it were.

The big problem is that for some reason UEFA award same value for a win and draw in both comps which I do not think is fair as it’s considerably harder to win a group matching the CL than the EL

Where the big points come from is qualifying for each round

IMO it is not worth it for our coefficient to scrape through to the last 16 to pick up extra 2 or 3 bonus points and get humped twice, as opposed to maybe win 3-4 other matches and get bonus pts for eg getting to a EL QF

  15. Evening all.

No matter who we get, our budget is likely to be higher than theirs. However, we have a farce of a situation whereby we cannot use our own venue for some games plus our signings will arrive late as usual. Yet we can still defeat the foreign dungheaps.

Celtic beat off stiff competition to sign the Swedish internationalist on a pre-contact from Rosenberg in November 2011, with the new Bhoy officially starting his three-and-a-half year deal the following January.

The defender began his career with Umea and GIF Sundsvall in his homeland, before enjoying a successful spell in Norwegian football, earning him a call-up to national side.

Lustig is now an established internationalist and helped his country qualify for Euro 2012.

In his first full season in Paradise, he became a key member of Neil Lennon’s side, and has continued to excel at right back. He is just as comfortable in central defence but likes to push forward and join the attack when he can.

Lustig scored one of the goals of the season in the 7-0 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle in the Scottish Cup, but his season ended early when he had a hip operation. He’ll be looking to return to action in season 2014/15, and he is a vital member of Neil Lennon’s squad.

DAY TO REMEMBER FOR OUR OLDEST SEASON TICKET HOLDERS

By: Newsroom Staff on 19 May, 2014 11:40

TROPHY presentation day at Celtic Park was a memorable one for all of our supporters, though if you’ve been following the club since the 1930s then you could perhaps be forgiven for being a little complacent about yet another league success.

Thankfully however, that was far from the case for eight of our oldest Season Ticket holders, who attended the game against Dundee United as very special guests of the club, and had a truly memorable day in Paradise.

Invited with a guest for a day of hospitality as a special thank you for their incredible support over more than 80 years, our VIPs on the day were Jackie Connor, David Bunton, Isa Bonner, Dennis Craig, Kathleen McDonald, Jack Stewart, Susan McGarry and Bettie Rafferty, who were hosted by John Paul Taylor, our Supporter Liaison Officer.

There was an early start in the Aitken Suite in the North Stand for breakfast and refreshments ahead of the lunchtime kick-off, before a visit from popular ex-Celts Tom Boyd and Joe Miller brought some special memories and tales of yesteryear from our guests.

At 94 years of age, Davie Bunton was our oldest guest, and spoke of the “marvellous occasion” that was his trip to Seville back in 2003, as well as his favourite player growing up – Malky MacDonald – a sentiment echoed by several others.

Jackie Connor – a friend to Lisbon heroes Jock Stein and Bertie Auld – is also no stranger to following the Bhoys in Europe, and indeed further afield, attending both the European Cup final in 1967, and the World Club Championships play-off in Montevideo which followed.

Kathleen McDonald went on to recall her favourite ever game, which was the thrilling European Cup quarter-final victory over Vojvodina at Celtic Park in 1967. With the match tied at 1-1, and heading for a play-off in Rotterdam, captain Billy McNeill powered home a last minute header to send the 70,000 strong – Kathleen included – into raptures, as the dream of lifting the big cup started to become a reality.

Amongst all the reminiscing there was a football match to be played, and Neil Lennon’s men didn’t disappoint, winning 3-1 on the day with goals from Anthony Stokes, Georgios Samaras and Kris Commons, before Stilyan Petrov got the party started by presenting captain Scott Brown with the SPFL Premiership trophy.

Our guests were in full voice throughout, giving the Bhoys their full backing, as they have done so many times throughout the years, with John Paul remarking on how memorable the day was for all involved.

He said: “It was great honour to spend the day with such distinguished guests. I had met some of the fans over the years, however it was great to really get to know more about their times supporting Celtic over many decades.

“I was surprised that most had Malky MacDonald as their favourite player and of course the stories of Lisbon and their early years of attending matches at Celtic Park were brilliant.

“I think the group enjoyed meeting other supporters who have been coming for so long and sharing stories about the old days, I don’t believe any of them had met before and that made it a bit more special. The club laid on a great day and I hope that this is something we can continue in the seasons to come.”

Talk of a 10-year reunion – instigated by Betty – are at an early stage, but nothing would delight us more, as we took time to thank them for their extraordinary support over the years, and look forward to many more to come with these remarkable Celts.

Truly special people, for a truly special club.
