AGM report, Living Wage, Rory Bremner, show us the deeds

1098

Celtic’s Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park today, was a livelier event than usual.  The board received a hostile response to their refusal to back a resolution to provide all staff with at least the Living Wage.  Several impassioned points were made from the floor, which convinced chairman, Ian Bankier, to dispense with his prepared response and provide answers to specific questions.

The vote went against the resolution based on the proxy votes cast by the chairman but the board have never lost the floor so convincingly on any prior issue.

Resolution 12, encouraging the club to purse the game’s authorities on matters relating to the governance of liquidated Rangers was adjourned indefinitely by the requisitioners.  On proposing the adjournment, a spokesman for the requisitioners (our own Morrissey23) explained that they had met the club and received information not previously known, and that further meetings were planned.

Fergus McCann made an unexpected contribution to the AGM by email through the chairman, extoling the virtues of financial director, Eric Riley, who he commended for 19 years’ service in pursuing Celtic’s interests.  Fergus asked for, and got, an applause for Eric Riley, which resulted in the first unanimous show of hands to re-elect a director I have seen at a Celtic AGM.

AGM questions can be a tortuous affair but they were on the money this year.  We had poetry, questions about financial governance including a question as to whether the club owns all of it’s perceived property assets.  Ian Bankier confirmed it did, before planting his tongue in his cheek to insist “I’m not going to show you the deeds”.

When one shareholder expressed frustration that a new Scottish club is pretending to be a now liquidated club, chief executive, Peter Lawwell, retorted, “Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair”.

Many thanks for the many CQN Annual orders, which are now shipping. You can order here:

  1. Guys I know it’s a long shot but looking for a ticket for Arctic Monkeys for my daughter. Needs to be standing as that’s where her pals will be. Thanks in advance.

  2. Evening all, well done to the AGMers, some principled and articulate folks there, by the sound of it. Re. Fraser Forster, I’m a little ambivalent about this evening: obviously great to see him get a cap, but at the same time, the debate it’s generating rests on the assumption that England are some incredibly superior football team. There’s a danger of buying into that myth in the very moment of praising Forster’s success. For me, he’s already a success, he doesn’t need the vain English fans and the condescending English media to validate him.

SSB playing to the bhun gallery……. usual LL react to ANY opportunity to criticise Celtic…

Well done, PL, for confirming a FACT …. !!!!

Just ordered my CQN Annual, looking forward to getting it.

I noticed personalised CQN beanies in the magazine – anyone know how much these cost ? Are these £15 too ?

    Winning captains ?

  6. Bournes – it was in interesting comment by Lawwell – and its now causing a storm. Good. Lets see if he now attacks the whole silly notion of them still being the same club (Scotland remains in utter denial about it). Keevins tonight has just said it was unbecoming – they are desparate to rewrite history.

Well done Forster – delighted for him.

Canamalar – the very best of luck in your discussions – I really hope it makes a difference – really do.

  8. Good luck to the big Celtic Wall but I hope Engerlund are royally pumped. 5 goals conceded due defensive cock ups with FF helpless to do anything would be an acceptable result.

    LOL

Sevco have complained about Lawwell’s Blair analogy.

Apparently they claim to have a 141 year history.

They’re out by 140 if say.

Corkcelt – of course I wouldnt have been happy. But let me be clear in my view. The Board did not want to debate res 12 because it leads them into showing their hand (I think they want to prop up the hun).

    ================================

No that is not what took place but that “showing their hand” belief is a natural consequence of a belief they want to prop up the hun.

That belief is now financially illogical and if you were able to let go of it then the first belief would also fall, apart from it not actually being the case. Celtic love coining it in from the CL but have to present a different face to hurting huns, although that mask slipped a wee bit today reading some comments.

One of the difficulties arising from what has happened today is the letting go of default positions re The Board.

The prediction was they would vote against based on past experience. That did not happen and it did not happen because of discussions where both sides were able to put forward their position and explain why they held them in true dialogue and in so doing persuaded the other of the validity of both points of view, leading to a different position both were happy to go forward from.

Their perma rage will be in overdrive tonight now PL has decided to prick the pus filled lie

  15. I can only assume that the board are currently compiling their case and as such do not wish to say any more at this point. An assumption yes, but one I shall be happy to make until more information can be made public without comprising their plans.

By the way, though I’m no board lover, i make the assumption because I do not for one minute think that by postponing the resolution they believe this will go away.

All logic suggests something positive is underway.

  16. NegAnon

Yes, it was, and by no means a throw away line, much more a line drawn in the sand.

The pretence continually challenged by Celtic will unify the Celtic support, and makes us stronger.

  17. Auldheid

I’d love to meet you and shake your hand some day. Why you bother to point out the true facts of the matter to the usual board haters is something I couldn’t do.

Joe it was more of a test than trust and the test was passed. I am delighted because earlier this week I was thinking if they fail it, how can I keep supporting?

Worse I could have became an Aw Naw /Kev J/Neg Anon (kidding lads but had the input been disregarded, I could not have paid another penny to watch a game not willing to confront its own failings.

  19. brother walfrid & living wage – not sitting comfortably with me at the mo, although I don’t know enough aboot the resolution tbh, sure it’s ok cos the average wage in Glasgow is London plus or minus fuppall divided by the poor asfupp aggregate aspiration eastend index

Oh…I should add that everything Auldheid has posted on here today suggests he is happy. That’s good enough for me

    ===========================

I have only been posting because I have the time to do so. I am hoping Morrisey, Canalamar and BRTH will be able to provide greater assurance in due course.

  21. Going by the determination of the resolutionists (is that a real word?) the action on resolution 12 suggests positive action by the board- I’m heartened by that

  22. I cannot believe that the people who put up the Resolution today chose to allow it to be side tracked without discussion at the AGM. This was after they had elicited the support of many people who were happy to lend their experience and expertise in bringing it to the table in the first place. I hope that they have a long hard look at themselves as their well constructed proposal disappears into whatever dark hole the board place it.

  23. IMO

Neil Lennon and PL are in cahoots in their ‘little’ crusade to sell the sell-able players and, although I canny prove it – my 49 year old Celtic paranoia-sensitivity tells me that both these fholk are onto a nice little earner. imo

Neil continues to insult with his proclamations that – Joe (the ghost)Ledley could yet be talked round to staying ?!?!? WTF ?

Neil have you stopped to wonder why the attendances are teetering just above the 20k mark ? IT’S OVER !!!

As for PL – yer comments about the huns can at best be described as – cheap.

Just like yer player recruitment policy.

The last time I heard Dr Jeanette Findlay ‘live’ was at the – FAC Demo at George Square in March this year. Any time I’ve heard her – she’s always been the type of quality Celtic to the core person that I’d love to be in charge at CP on the ‘bored’. imo

It would no longer be labeled the ‘bored’ by me if fholk of the quality o Dr J

  24. I am delighted that big Peter has lit the fuse.

Sevco are not the deid club, we all know it, they all know it, but they deny it.

Sevco are pretending to be the same club.

    They are not.

Let them try to prove, factually, that they are.

Now , that will be interesting.
