And they came in huge numbers to buy season tickets

546

Ticket officeThis morning’s images of a chain of people snaking around the Celtic Park ticket office and out towards London Road is remarkable. Even more so when you consider more people were buying season tickets online than queueing from the small hours to make sure they can support Celtic next season.

Frankly, I didn’t think we’d see sights like this until we saw a change in playing environment.

Season ticket sales, together with recent commercial deals concluded with Dafabet and Magners, puts the club on an enormously better financial footing, but the benefits extend beyond what we see today. Peripheral income, such as match day spent at the superstore and at kiosks, will have a corresponding lift.

Now if we get Champions League income on top of this………….

I fear that Brendan Rodgers will be like the man with the £1m pound note.

He has the money, but no where to spend it.

With the increase in revenue in England, our purchasing power has diminished further, which means we can only shop further down the pecking order.

Players who my have cost £2m last year, will be around £4m this year.

It may just mean we get higher class loan deals.

    Disclaimer.

    I hope I am wrong.

No worries. I haven’t seen HT on for a while.I hope he’s well. He enjoyed Dublin, I’m not sure about the taxi drivers though:)

It’s funny watching the trolls at times trying to divert attention from a good Celtic story. Anything to change the subject.

Cause a row, wind someone up…If only they put as much energy into locating Mark Warburton.

I’m off to tune into Court TV to see what part of the Sevco circus is in the courts today:))

I am content that I know Celtic’s stance on the ‘same club myth’, and have been since Peter Lawell’s hilarious Rory Bremner quip.

If that didn’t give you a clue?

I don’t think an official Celtic Football club response to what is a relatively new young myth needs to be made public, for the sake of contradicting their ongoing pretence.

Whether Scotland as a whole dresses it up as Rangers, isn’t really a Celtic supporting issue that defines Celtic supporting. IMHO

It really does always come down to ‘ what we know ‘

That’s why we are finding new club is even more of an absurdity than old Rangers.

The permanent never to be removed predicament, is having to pretend for the rest of their existence that they are indeed the same Rangers.

THOMTHETIM. Fella we really should be looking for new players in other markets not just the over inflated EPL.There are many markets throughout the world that we should be looking at for instance the first player I would move for is Mc Ginn at Hibernian. H.H.

Totally agree with you. McGinn would be an ideal signing. That lad will go on to be one of the best holding midfielders Scotland has ever produced IMO.

I always think it pays to buy a fan, he understands and knows the scene in Scotland, and has great ability. We should move on him before someone down south does.

A midfield trio of him, Ryan Christie and Liam Henderson? All young, all talented and all Celtic Supporters. What’s not to like?

Just read the BBC Scottish football gossip page.

The herald has a bit with Craig Broon saying the SFA are ignoring advice from him and Wattie about developing Scottish football.

What a load of mince fae Broon. Him and Wattie hardly ever brought in or developed young players with the national nor at club level when they managed.

Both lets just say, played ,cautious football with hee haw flair and imagination.

You’re making bricks without straw, and you know it.

It’s interesting though how people’s views on this issue have changed over the last few months.

They used to say that Celtic would make a statement, when the time was right, but just not yet. But definitely at some time, Celtic would leave no one in any doubt exactly what they thought. When all the court cases had been exhausted, and the time limits for appeals had expired, and when, and when and when.

As predicted (by me at any rate) that has now morphed seamlessly to ‘there’s no need to make a statement, and anyway, who cares, look at all this shiny new stuff, can’t we just be happy?’

WE head back to this day in 1969. The Beatles were at number one with Get Back; Apollo 10 was orbiting the Moon; and the classic Where Eagles Dare was new out at the flicks.

Back on Tyneside, meanwhile, all hell broke loose at St James’ Park.

It was a night when the ancient battles of Culloden and Bannockburn were seemingly relived.

The Scots versus the English – old enemies, head to head, no quarter given.

Newcastle United, against all the odds, had fought through to the semi-finals of the Inter-City Fairs Cup.

Finishing 10th the season before, the Magpies had qualified for Europe on the old one-city rule.

The Toon Army had taken European football to their hearts, packing out Gallowgate as the black-and-whites progressed through the competition, dumping out quality opposition from Holland, Portugal and Spain along the way.

The semi-final drew the Magpies against Glasgow giants Rangers.

More than 12,000 Geordies were among a 70,000 crowd at Ibrox to see gritty United grind out a 0-0 draw in the away leg.

A week later a near 60,000 all-ticket crowd at St James’ saw United roar to a 2-0 lead.

The second goal in the 77th minute was the cue for hordes of drunken Rangers fans to stream out of the Gallowgate End and on to the pitch.

Bottle and cans flew through the air as supporters battled with police.

It took nearly 20 minutes for police to restore order.

A police spokesman said: “If we’d had enough men, we’d have arrested the 2,000 fans who were on the park.”

Newcastle United v Glasgow Rangers at St James’ Park, Newcastle, May 21, 1969

In the event 89 people were injured and 30 were arrested.

United’s victory booked them a place in the final, but the following day’s media concentrated on the ‘night of shame’.

The Chronicle reported: “Policemen stood shoulder-to-shoulder behind the goal, defiantly gazing at the hordes of human animals they had just driven off the St James’ Park pitch.

“For 17 minutes, the Battle of Gallowgate raged. This was the night soccer wept for the name of Glasgow Rangers.”

We continued: “Glasgow Rangers directors, shocked, shattered and embarrassed by last night’s riots in Newcastle, labelled the offenders lunatics.”

It was reported that a glass and litter-strewn Newcastle city centre was counting the cost of a massive clean-up as “shops, public houses, and even some private homes took the brunt of the damage after the game”.

Meanwhile, police praised United fans “who refused to be drawn into the fray.”

Looking back, the events of May 21, 1969, could be viewed as the start of a dark age for football, and the game would be plagued throughout the 1970s and 1980s by hooliganism.

Somebody Celtic should sign: Adam Armstrong of Newcastle United.

He’s only 19 and went out on loan to Coventry last season. He scored 20 goals in 40 games for an average Coventry side. He made the PFA team of the year for League One.

It’s possible that Newcastle would want to keep him but I reckon Rafa Benitez will be more interested in established players. Newcastle want to bounce straight back and young players are a risk.

Looking for some advice. The good lady managed to put in the wrong registration plate for her car when paying via her phone for parking in a private car park and has been given a £100 fine for not paying.

Should she appeal and admit her mistake.

Pay the £60 reduced fee ( which expires today)

I said we should have been signing John McGinn last season when he was a free agent.

  18. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

    JFH,

We are already in that market, also in the stepping stone market, but it will mean we will have to pay more and compete with the nouveau rich(er) clubs from lower down the English food chain.

I think Mc.Ginn and Christie are very similar in style, from my limited viewing of both.

I think Ryan has it in him to go all the way.

I have said previously, apart from our central defence emergency, I think that BR should have enough about him to mould a team capable of negotiating the qualifiers, using players already at the club, thereby avoiding the pitfall of new players, unfamiliar with the club, team mates and the environment.

One advantage of this would be, if we qualified for the EL groups, a better class of recruit he wants European football.

I think the better players will be at the Euros or whatever competitions their Associations are involved in and would not be available for the qualies, or would hold off to see what level, if any we are playing in.

    An Tearmann,

At that time, there was a culture of fans invading the pitch in an attempt to get the match abandoned.

We tried it at a semi at Ibrox versus St.Mirren, although there were bottles in orbit in that game.

If I remember correctly though, it was a press afterthought that we were trying to stop the game.

Just to be sure, Bob Kelly announced that had the game been abandoned, we would have conceded the tie.

He’s already being touted for a loan spell at Kilmarnock in the papers this morning. Not to say I don’t think we should be targeting the same players as Killie but I think we can do a little better than that. I would have liked us to take a punt on Bobby Wood from Union Berlin before he signed for Hamburg

Completely different player from young Christie who I rate equally highly. Wee Ryan is a creator. McGinn would be what Cantona called the ‘water carrier’. All good teams have them.

I wish that guy in the queue for season tickets DID manage to purchase a time machine.

First thing he could do is return to the Scottish Cup Final and confirm that sevco had a manager/coach as it seems that he simply vanished in a puff of smoke/flare. Since there was no one to congratulate Hibernian FC on their historic win I can only assume he/she was a figment of the collective imaginings of rabid sevcoites and the media and Shugh the Soup. I distinctly remember him making a triumphalist gesture when they scored the second goal but later a look of sheer panic as he screamed at Weary Dave as he realised his team had turned to jelly(and ice cream) and were collapsing. This was prophetic as it turned out he was right. Maybe the only thing he got right that day.

Since his disappearance as each day passes I keep getting a sort of reverse deja vu feeling. Did this guy really exist?? I keep asking myself.

Maybe he is still working with the medical staff resetting all the broken bones and cuts his players got from the pitch invaders. Perhaps he is still locked in the Hampdump lavvies. Has anyone checked???
