Anti-Celtic story parcelled up by Police spokesman

1077

The Daily Record won credit for scooping the off-field story of the week, multiple investigations into singing by Celtic fans, but others are beginning to ask who gave the newspaper details of a police investigation.

The stories broke in an unusual manner, with SFA referee and policeman, Eddie Smith, named as the person who reported Celtic fans to Uefa and the SPL.  The officer made what looks like an inexplicable decision after some confrontations inside Celtic Park, without mentioning a word of his concerns to the Celtic security people during the game – the normal procedure for such incidents.

Smith, who has Celtic supporting credentials, was named, providing the perfect foil to deflect accusations that this was some sort of Masonic conspiracy, which it was not.  The entire episode is a classic internecine dispute among Celtic supporters, but with the comments made to Uefa, the story was parcelled up for the Record by a Strathclyde Police spokesman.

The Daily Record reported, “A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said: “For Eddie [Smith] to speak to the delegate after the match is nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, it is standard practice””. This is completely irrelevant.

Celtic’s retort in the same article got to the heart of the issue – why the police are speaking to Uefa and the media but not speaking to the club: “This is quite unprecedented as no issues were raised to the club during the match and the police didn’t inform us directly about their concerns.”

Control over media communications from Strathclyde Police falls to Director of Communications, Rob Shorthouse, (pictured on the left).  Shorthouse, whose own favourite team have taken a reputational battering from Uefa in recent seasons, despite silence from the police, should be concerned that the force have given newspapers material for three days of screaming headlines instead of addressing the key concern about departure from established procedure.  This has only inflamed a volatile situation between Celtic fans and officers on the ground. Shorthouse, who held a similar position at the SFA until two years ago, will be familiar with the sensitivities of football issues.

Perhaps a Freedom of Information request will reveal who leaked a story that laid out details which reflected so badly on Celtic.  All we want is equal treatment, as a former chairman once commented.

I think there is a genuine fear amongst some that we may not be able to survive as we are without them. On a personal level it’s a little like my fear of going freelance, I may end up no worse off or maybe even better off but I’d be in control – however the fear of losing a known income is there.

Back to the football clubs – so that fear of the unknown is there and it’s genuine and understandable. You know what though. Let’s give it a go. If we sink, we sink and we rebuild and in time it may be viewed as a watershed moment where we stopped buying in expensive and mediocre players and started producing and promoting mediocrity from within :).

What’s become apparently clear over the last week or two is that any positive vote from the Celtic Board towards parachuting NewCo into the SPL is likely to be at least as financially disastrous as them not being in it for 3 years.

I maintain that should such a situation arise it will be viewed as an opportunity for immediate league restructuring with NewCo going in at SPL2 or equivalent and therefore likely to be out of top tier football for only a year.

Well said Michael Kelly, yes, although I wouldn’t be advertising Nil By Mouth as any sort of reliable, credible and neutral body in the debate.

Thanks. I wasn’t really asking about the range of possibilities that might exist, though. What I was asking was if the people who think Celtic should vote yes are likely to change their minds if the Scottish establishment keeps putting the boot into Celtic.

I appreciate your thoughts, though, and your freelance dilemma.

Gonnae shoosh ? I have not had one in 2 weeks,in the mood noo.

  7. There may well be, and probably is, a solid reason why our board is so quiet. Is it forming battleplans, is it working if we should vote against the men from poundland etc.

Whatever it is we need to be told and kept up to speed because it does appear the board is getting carried away in the onrushing tide of Anti-Celticism to me.

Everyone knows about Rangers problems. This deflecting technique is something Rangers may be fond of, but not something we need to resort to.

Fair play to Neil. We need to cut it out. As much as we may disagree with the flimsy reasoning, not singing about the ‘RA has nothing to do with football.

Bankiebhoy, mebbees, mebbees not. Still havent sen anyone having a go a what Michael Kelly said on TV the other night but knowing the press Neil is fair game.

However, he would have been better keeping silent altogether and not feeding the situation further.

I dont think DD and the board want the Green Brigade or their like at Celtic Park. I think they see all the flag waving and chanting as beneath them. Mr Desmonds dream for Celtic is a stadium like Old Trafford. Full of prawn sandwich munchers who behave themselves but offer little in way of match atmosphere. If we eventually move to another league watch the sanitisation of Celtic Park move into overdrive.

I dont think the board would shed many tears if the GB was no more.

I have been freelancing for 20 years.

It´s a bit like moving from the SPL to the EPL.

I have had far more job security as a free lancer as an employee.

Celtic need to be brave and bite the bullet.

The idea that Scottish football needs a Rangers and therefore by extension a Rangers protection racket … and boy that has became highly visible these last 5 years is abhorrent to anybody that is remotely interested in freedom justice civility and fair play.

History has taught us that the Old Firm model helps nobody in Scotland except for the major shareholders. It is beyond comprehension that Scotland needs the Old Firm when it is exactly that that has brought it to it´s knees.

If the huns dont come back to the game and only want to come back with a vehicle that allows them to spew their bile with the full approval of the bigoted bodies that we see in Scotland and then we quickly acquiesce into our position as the down trodden perpetual victim then Celtic FC can go take a flying hike to itself.

Not only would I no longer support then I would actively take a stance against them.

Time to be brave. Slit their throats. They are sick and staggering around in agony and embarrassment. It is the decent humane civilised thing to do. All those that are caught up in their illness need removed from the Scottish game. It will be tough but being in a quandary about actually doing it and seeing it through can only be described as absolute betrayal.

Kelly’s statement as articulate, pertinent, relevant and accurate as any statement I have read on here – orf anywhere else. An excellent defence of the club and its support all while asking questions of the right people. I agree – lets see what our board have to say. But credit where its due. Eh?

I relly fear that no 2 could happen. It would be a big mistake and would be playing into their hands. Imagine the media coverage!!!!!

Well said Kelly, and well said Neil Lennon. I think he is right to come out and ask the small number of fans to stop the “up the ra and PIRA chants”. Look at Walter and Sally last season- not one public request (that I can remember) for the hunnish hoardes to stop their illegal/racist/sectarian songs. WE ARE MUCH BETTER THAN THEM!

I should mention that i think the GB are fantastic, and the singing of BOTOB and various other rebel ballads of many years gone by is ok we just need to stop the RA stuff in relation to recent years.
