Arrests, Celtic nations, absurd fantasies, selling the silver

1736

The BBC report that police in England detained four men in early morning raids in relation to an inquiry into the purchase of Rangers by Craig Whyte (not one of the four) from Sir David Murray. This one has been a slow burner so far and although this is a significant step, there are still many layers to be unpicked. It’s been three years since I heard of what was going on in the dying days of Rangers, this step seemed inevitable, but as the years passed I wondered if anything would happen.

Please remember this is a serious legal proceeding, so act appropriately here and elsewhere online. Failure to do so could prejudice future prosecutions – and we don’t want to do that. No speculation on who is involved and what they may have done.

Why are we reading that the European Commission confirmed Celtic did not benefit from state aid? Good grief, if six of you get together and badgered someone into checking if Ronny Deila is in the Norwegian Red Brigade, would anyone subsequently report this nonsense?

Absurd fantasies being denied is not news, unless you’re analysing the absurd fantasists.

I see there are complaints aimed at Ibrox that they are “giving away the family silver to keep the lights on”.

What kind of fool has silver in the drawer but can’t put money in the meter? Football clubs, like all companies, have to keep the lights on and pay all creditors. If they cannot pay, they are legally obliged to sell assets. Failure to do so will result in the court appointing someone to dispose of those assets for them.

This is where Newco Rangers are now. The utter contempt for financial responsibility which has endured at Ibrox for over two decades, means that no one can afford to cherish whatever silver remains. It is perhaps even more futile to blame major shareholders for not accepting an offer to dilute their control and destroy shareholder value – which is an accurate description of Dave King’s recent approach.

Those shareholders were heralded a short time ago for putting their money where their mouths were when the legions of ‘Rangers men’ kept their hands in their pockets. Offering shareholders a deal which would jeopardise their chances of the financial return they expect was a waste of everyone’s time.

Newco is owned by people who have put tens of millions into it and who are looking for a financial return. Any forward plan has to recognise this reality. With trading conditions are severe as they are, the club will sell-off anything they have to compensate these shareholders and meet obligations to tax and trade creditors. Costs will be cut, and if income subsequently falls, cut again.

Having checked out Burton’s online this morning I think I’ve got Christmas sorted. I really hope we see the Sports Direct ‘flash mob’ protests deployed at another of Britain’s major retailers. They are up there along with State Aid campaigns as a productive use of time and energy by people with unparallelled levels of vision and clarity, who really need more focus more/tone down the hissy fits.

I’ve never been one for patriotism but if you’re off to Celtic Park tonight, remember to sing both anthems in the battle of the Celtic nations. This advice may change on Tuesday. It will be great to see Aiden, Shaun, David, Robbie, Martin and Gordon grace Celtic Park one more time. So many great memories…

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, here. We’ve stopped taking orders for signed copies, which will only be available at author events going forward.

A CQN’er (and absolute star) has kindly donated two North Stand tickets to Tuesday’s Scotland-England game on Tuesday. He doesn’t want any money, but asked if I could get something for Mary’s Meals for them. Face value is £60 each. Email me before midnight tonight if you’d like them, celticquicknews@gmail.com

    the glorious balance sheet

    BMCUW 0915:-

Unfortunately the Orange Order vote was actively courted by at least one Labour politician so I`d say this wasn`t just a case of their votes being passively welcomed; in fact this particularly Labour MP called on the OO to “mobilise and motivate” for the cause.

Labour MP for Livingston Graeme Morrice attended the East of Scotland Orangemens Annual Boyne celebrations at Bathgate 10 days ahead of the referendum vote and implored them to “save the union.”

    http://www.britishtogether.co.uk/news2.php?action=viewArticle&articleId=43

Unfortunately the antics of brainless halfwits like Morrice come with a price to pay – by courting the OO vote and pandering to them, he gives the OO the impression that the odious order is somehow relevant and important in today`s society. He has massaged their egos and reaffirmed their supremacist outlook by making them think that they have the power to “save the union.”

Clowns like Morrice feed the OO loyalist bigotry monster but never have to deal with the mess when that monster brings its shame to our streets. I look forward to him being turfed out of his seat at the General Election next year.

Sorry for the belated reply. Busy talking football, family and zombie t-shirts wi my sister!

I thought your reply was excellent, which is why I reposted it in full. Sadly,he is not alone in his tastes.

You are,of course, correct that he is an odious individual who panders to the lowest common denominator in order to garner votes-and by extension,a career-from those whom right-minded(!)individuals would normally avoid.

Looks like this prick of the highest order-I’m getting better at this wordplay-picked the right career.

I can only hope that, despite the party he represents, that it is a short one.

As I said earlier to NYEBEVANSREBELSOLDIER,that fine hero of The Labour Party turned 117 today.

Well,he didnae really. He turned in his grave at what has become of the party he fought for all his life.

(Apologies for the rant-or was it a lament?)

Probably in the same fashion that a large proportion of the more voluble Yes posters seem to know what No voters think

Was hoping Ireland would win last night, but it was never on the cards.

Scotland were the best team,so well done to them.I won’t be beating myself up about it though, just hope all Celtic players return unscathed from all the internationals.

Terrible news about that young fella falling to his death.Awful for his family.

  6. bournesouprecipe on

Thoughts and prayers to the family of the 22 year football fan, who died at Celtic Park last night.

  7. First time post, looking on I find it unfathomable that Celtic fans regardless of national identity are justifying or simply dismissing the McGeady abuse. No physical harm was done to the player so what’s the big deal.

It is a microcosm of what Scotland is still about, any expression of Irish nationalism is frowned upon. Outwith Celtic park were in this land , especially the central belt, do you see Irish flags flying. I myself work for a large Irish company based here and you’ll see a saltire, a lion rampant and the company flag, that’s it.

Nowhere in ROI would the saltire be seen as anything other than a proud symbol of fellow Celts. I don’t believe the psyche in this country will change until we fight these narrow ideas and views of Ireland as something dangerous and an affront to Scottishness. So to look on this sight and see fellow Celtic fans condoning this abuse against a Glasgow born Celt makes me see that it isn’t just zombies or the tartan army who need to learn.

As for the booing argument, Is it also ok to boo black players? Obviously not, people challenged that. Throwing bananas? Most of them don’t reach their target. You can justify anything if your agenda is skewed.

  8. The reason that some thinkMulgrew didn’t look out of place last night was because the opposition was useless.Put him up against fast thinking / movement players then you see the real Mulgrew.

I thought the standard last night looked like English first division standards.

Finally MON. Is becoming a dinosaur .

  9. With a wee bit of good thinking,Celtic could have the spine of a team, consisting of

    Gordon

    VVD,Denayer,

    Mulgrew,Broony,

    Guidetti,Maloney,

    Add in Izzy,Lustig,Johansen,Forrest,Mathews,Griffiths,Commons.

A bit of luck, and that looks about as good as we could hope for.

The saltire is an integral part of the butcher’s apron.

Which is only right and fitting, given the prominent role Scots had in building the British empire, and the economic benefit Scotland derived from the whole thing.

    Absolutely dire p.

Shocking. One shot in the entire game.

Their midfield was powder puff with no creativity at all.

Scotland were always comfortable I thought.

Genuine question given your breath of comment on the trouble ( or lack of according to you ) last night

Am I to take it that’s it’s a no then and your comment was baseless nonsense

Just like your Maloney comment ….about him being Wigan’s best player every week …when he has in fact played less than half of their league games

    I don’t hate Deila …seems a nice man

As for yes voters …don’t think I hate them either …I do get frustrated by some who incessantly comment ,the content of which is often questionable

Sad life ???.., no need for the abuse ….even if you are a vacuous eejit that posts nonsense ad nausem

  15. Through the door this morning the regular circular from local msp John Mason in which he publishes a motion he raised at Holyrood condemning the evidence of sectarian, anti catholic and anti Irish disturbance during the referendum in Shettleston and other places.

He was fair enough to confirm the motion was also in the name of Siobhan McMahon Labour msp.

Our fight is not we ourselves alone. Happily.

    HH

  16. You know what I find really interesting, those who scream loudest about anti-Irish racism and sectarianism and bigotry are some of those who consistently post the most vehement and offensive anti-Scottish remarks.

But I’m sure that there is no bigotry etc involved in that.

    Is that just banter lads?

  17. My friends in Celtic,

Can we ever escape this referendum and constant negativity and division.

The referendum was not a measurement of patriotism.

Last nights game was not a measurement of patriotism.

There are some facts that should be equated. :-

Many no voters were passionate about wanting Scotland to win

Some Yes voters did not want Scotland to win.

A vote for the SNP next year is not a mandate for independence or another neverendum

The country needs to move on, although I can understand the issue is still raw. We need to focus on the undoubted inequality in our midst and strive to improve on the lowest youth unemployment for many years.

Focus on getting more into work with the living wage and stop scapegoating the 55% for every single problem.

    HH.

  18. Greenpinata

EVERYTHING that is bad that comes our way from Westminster IS the fault of the 55% and they MUST accept their role in that.

They ALSO NEVER EVER EVER have the right to complain about these things – they voted for them and people like me will be there EVERY time they open their mouths and whine.

They DESERVE the blame and when their grandchildren are crying because the NHS the over 65s got their whole lives is gone or radically changed or they start life in X amount of debt because education gets privatized as well they will realise what they have done.

  19. I watched the game in a Hungarian run bar in the Costa Del Sol with a mixed lot for company. ( I could have said bag but my wife might think I meant her).

Geordies commenting on Fletcher v O Shea, a bluenose and wife being a bit patrionising in that unconcious way they do when attempting humour to a Dublin girl who preferred rugby, but either never heard them or excused their crassness.

At the end I consoled the Dublin lass with the thought the goal scorer was named SEAN Maloney and that she had actually witnessed as much rugby as football.

In that context I thought Mulgrew stepped right up to the physical plate in the last 15 and he must feel invulnerable after the tackles he endured last night and in Romania.

The goal was a diamond in the blood and snotters and I hope Maloney stays as injury free for as long as he was injury prone.

    A very enjoyable evening overall.

  20. I always thought that Sean was a brilliant player, more in the mould of a Barca team, than a Celtic team. The goal was straight out of the training camp, wonderful. things were so tight it was going to take a wonder strike to open things up. My thoughts are that the victory was no fluke, Scotland deserved it. if you take Aiden out of the Irish team they are pretty ordinary.

  21. Hebcelt hail hail to you too.

Jamesgang well to be honest most things are actually quite simple. We just like to dress them and pretend we are intellectual. I was going to say less of the auld. But it’s true. I a, and auld git! But I take my grumpiness out on you lot on CQN. My family are grateful :)
