Ashely hates conflict

725

We’ve often talked about the only real danger to a football club: internecine strife:

Internecine, def: pertaining to conflict within a group, mutually destructive.

In football, your enemies can’t inflict permanent harm, that can only come from within.  This morning’s media cover threats from Sevconians to boycott (clearly in homage to Irish tradition) club/company products.  More power to their elbows, they should boycott every piece of tat Newco’s disparate IP rights holders churn out, apart from the occasional novelty duck.

Here’s the thing, before you turn the tanks inwards, you’d better be sure you’ve got the ‘What happens next?’ question sorted.  If you don’t, you’re playing a real life version of Lemmings.

Threatening Mike Ashley?  Aye sure, that’ll work, knock yourself out.  I’m sure Ashley’s known as a big pussy, he hasn’t got the money to face down the malcontents, either.  I bet he’s already writing his capitulation letter, “Dear Sevconians, by noticing that I can’t handle conflict you’ve outsmarted me.  The game’s up.”

What was it Charles Green told John Brown he would do to Ibrox?  Hmmm.

Blame the SFA, SPL, BBC, Celtic, Her Majesty’s lawyers, the Daily Record and Raith Rovers but you need to be on the inside to wreak havoc like this.

Interesting front opened by the English Premier League today on the copycat use of pyrotechnics at football games.  “Someone could get killed”, said policing minister Damian Green.  You’re 20 years out of date, Mr Green.

Here’s the problem: it’s possible to discharge one of these devices in a crowded area without accepting the safety/reputational/fine consequences.  Enormously invasive searches of unconnected people would be required to prevent pyros being taken into a stadium which is just not possible, eradication requires everyone to decide not to participate.

The only practical method I can see of stopping the use of pyrotechnics in Scottish football is to give Sports Direct exclusive distribution rights.  Who’d buy them then?

  1. It was all about timing. MON didn’t hold transfer talks in time, MON didn’t have any other targets in place, Bobo was leaving us without an replacement. PL would have been hung by the fans for not giving Bobo a contract, he had no other option.

Yet another player given a massive contract by MON while he held a gun to the PLC board using us, the Celtic fans.

My post was not in relation to Bobo but to players being farmed out, continuing to receive their agreed wage, and somehow receiving sympathy ……..the one I feel sorry for is the manager as he tries to juggle a 22 man pool and keep players and fans happy. Bobo’s situation was ,thankfully , a one off farce foisted on us by the blessed Martin

Bobo stick around for his loyalty bonus. WGS accepted the new way for a while. MON was never going to accept it and Tony Mowbary about a week. I would still prefet to see a football man in control of the football budget. We would get more bang for buck. Too much waste and the suits dont deserve their deferred bonuses. I believe if we had been more astute with the better younger players that delivered we could be 10 m better off this year but we are going backwards as a team. MON suffered from having to pay off the mistake that was the dream team. Even after Seville the decision was made pronto like due to the EPL invite not being forthcoming. We embraced FFP wholeheartedly and we are now terrified to speak up for it being properly implemented.

Fellow Tims- I had emailed my concerns to the local MP on the heavy handed policing around the application of the offensive behaviour bill and he sent this back

Thank you for your e-mail to me regarding the above matter.

The first annual analysis of charges reported under the Act was published in June. It showed that there were 268 charges reported under Section 1 the Offensive Behaviour at Football Legislation. The majority of the charges were for “hateful” behaviour (46.6%) and “threatening” behaviour (44.4%); while all 46 charges for “other behaviour that a reasonable person would be likely to consider offensive” were for behaviour which referenced terrorism or terrorist organisations (17.2% of all charges).

With regards to the comments in the last paragraph of your email, the vast majority of charges for “hateful” behaviour were for behaviour derogatory towards Roman Catholicism (83%), with 15.1% for behaviour derogatory towards Protestantism and 1.9% for behaviour derogatory towards Judaism.

Has anyone read the report and does it reflect the stats shown here?

Bobo was given a contract, a big one. He stuck to it. There can be no criticism of him for doing that.

Any criticism should be laid at the door of the people who gave it to him, i.e. MON and the board.

I loved MON’s wonder years, but at the end of them we were in a scary place, with debts spiralling and an unsustainable wage bill.

Which makes what WGS did all the more remarkable, bearing in mind the austerity cuts he was putting in at the time. He got amazing results for us under the circumstances IMO.

Guess that makes me a happy clapper then. *Trudges into kitchen with pillow. Turns gas on in oven*

Had a wee look at the website of the Scortish League Challenge Cup (Ramsdens).

    It seems to me that in its 23 year history the only teams in the Scottish Leagues during its 23 year history who have not competed in it, are;

    Celtic f.c.

    Rangers f.c.

    Aberdeen f.c.

    Hearts f.c.

    Kilmarnock f.c.

    Motherwell f.c.

Hearts will join the list next season, making it 5.

Verily, MON so loved his beloved son Bobo that he bestowed upon him riches upon riches, even so that the number would have pleased King Solomon himself.

And after time it came to pass that the blessed MON became leader of the Astonites from the land of Villa.

And the blessed MON returned to the land where he had developed much favour in search of a Man, a centre of halves.

But lo it came to pass, that the blessed MON did not use angels and trinkets to lure his beloved son Bobo who he had rewarded with treasures measureless to man.

Instead he paid many talents and trinkets to buy the cueller known as the ugly bette from the hunnites.

And Bobo remained in the land of milk and honey for many years hence.

    Here endeth the lesson.

  13. When does ole Mo Bangura rejoin us and how long’s left on his contract? Serious question.

And talking of cheese, the 3 to avoid tonight (based on my recent lack of success) are West Ham, Burnley and Notts Forest.

  15. The MON era is the only time I’m aware of that a Celtic manager has been fully backed with a substantial transfer budget.

When has it ever happened at any other time?

I think this shows what can be done as we had domestic supremacy and qualified for a Euro final.

Think I’ve spent most other years bemoaning that we were one/two/three players short of a great side.

During Martins era we had a great side

Was it true that during his time in exile Bobo maintained the lowest fat % of all the players?

And was he fined for not wearing a club tie on one occasion?

I was on a flight going glasgow to manchester the day we played down there, in CL, and got beat.

Bobo, a younger player, eric riley and brian wilson came on, and sat two by two in front of me. Bobo absolutely filled the seat, and his head was up above the headrest when sitting down, massive gladatorial looking specimen of a man.

Super polite, and engaging with it, he spoke to a few who were excited to see him.

After take off, the trolley came down, and Eric offered the party some refreshments, can i get you a coffee guys, soft drinks, a tea maybe ?

The players get water, wilson gets nothing, Eric gets a coffee,

    Re Bobo:

Probably irrelevant to the debate, but I was told at the time that while Bobo was with us he was shovelling a lot of money back to Guinea to set up clean water points, roads etc.

Never checked it out but the source was a good one.

How can you blame Bobo he was offered a contract he agreed to it and was willing to play for reasons unknown to us ( but we can imagine ) WGS did not pick him that was no fault of Bobo.I know MON is well thought of on this blog but the guy wasnt faultless. He didnt hang around long after he found budgets required to be cut and although I hope he does well in his new job he hasnt set the heather on fire since leaving us.H.H.

The treatment that BBBB still rankles with me. The big guy broke his leg in a Celtic jersey and was still cast out.

Even then he came played at Tannadice when the team was short and put in a MOTM performance.

  21. We talk long and often of having missed out on Steven Fletcher and James McCarthy as if there was uniform and widespread opinion in support of the “buy at any price” option for these two at the time. At the current time, Finbogasson and Ryan Gauld are the latest to occupy the ABWF (anyone but Willo Flood) position.

What we hear less of is the numerous “no brainer” options which are touted on here but disappear with the club that took them when Celtic declined.

There was a huge surge of support on here for buying James McFadden last summer. At the risk of tempting fate for next Friday, how is he doing just now?
